Hi guys.

Garcel here from the philippines.
This is a add-ons (Fasterfox) which works in my country that really makes the browser of the N900 (Microb) faster.

Update 9/18/11

Fasterfox version 3.9.7 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/RsccmanFasterfox/)

Fasterfox Lite Version 3.9.1 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fasterfox-9148/eula/110985?src=dp-btn-primary) - without the Enhanced Prefetching

"Speed DNS".
This add-on does DNS pre-resolution of all the links on a web page and hence saves the extra second that it takes to lookup this information when you click on a link. No more starring at your web pages till it loads.

Having installation problems?

1) You restart MicroB but still nothing happens?

Blocks ads, ad popups, cookie trackers and spyware on the web. basically. no adds on a websites will load the page much faster.

just tried this in ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, and it seems to work, would say some pages loads 2x as fast

don't know about microB, can anyone confirm this on microB

Don't mean to be a behind, but fasterfox had so many issues I had to kill it in several incarnations. For one, it assumes I should use RAM to preload things. In a portable browser, RAM and CPU is limited, while bandwidth is respectable at 54 MBps.

Using the same wifi, Microb is slower than a laptop, obviously due to RAM usage and CPU when rendering.

It might deliver, but it didn't for me. Only a few sites were slightly faster, as the expense of memory. Also, bandwidth was never my issue, it might be for you.

Just adding my experience. Good luck.

I have a problem with both add ons :( microb install both of them,but next,the browser ask me to restart to apply the changes. When I push the "restart" button, nothing happens. I restarted the phone and also microb closing and reopening it,and nothingmagain. Also, I cant uninstall already installed contents... what happes here?? :s thanks a lot!

do you mean dling the page so next time its like offline browsing ? cause i'm using Maxthon browser on my computer and it does that, so any site i wanna visit again i must hit refresh to get the new data

Another easy way to make microb faster is to add your config to a file user.js in /home/user/mozilla/.microb because the standard file prefs.js is overwritten with any start of microb.

Thanks for the support you guys. Remember that we all have different level of technology infrastructures. :)

You can uninstall the add-ons by clicking the drag down menu on the web browser. Then click options. then click add-ons.

Just press the restart microb. You won't have any notification but it will take effect. :)

Did you double check your add ons? Web browser>drag down menu>options>add-ons

Are getting an error? If so. What did it says.

For some of us, me included, the restart button doesn't restart and thus add-ons never get installed.

One then might get the impression that addons that had been installed couldn't be uninstalled, but the fact is they were never installed to begin with because you have to restart to complete the installation.

Thank you for this tip Carlito.

I have been having worries with installing extensions for the whole one and half years I have owned this device. This fixed it.

By the way, it is:

/home/user/.mozilla/microb/extensions/

At least if using terminal.

EDIT:

I was very skeptic about SpeedDNS making any difference in speed, but seems I was wrong.

It seems to take away (partially) the long delay between entering the address and microb starting to load the page.

MicroB is the default browser of the N900. The one that has the planet earth icon name "Web". Just top the drag down menu. Hit options (You should find it there) Then add-ons.

to everyone who could not install the plugin, first u must install a program call greasemonkey in the apps, THEN install both of the script

after u install the script, make sure u hit that restart a couple of time and wait like a minute, the plug in will get install

Nope. You don't need greasemonkey in order for this to work. These are add-ons not a scripts for GM.

Greasemonkey is only capable of using scripts from userscript.org And when you install a script. You will only find them under the preference of GM and not in "Extensions"

Guys. I have this dumb question. (I hope someone will answer me)

Is there a way to make the microb much faster by editing some settings on about:config? When you type about:config on the web browser. A bunch of settings can be modified. I hope someone will look into this.

PS

I don't recommend doing that to those who still has warranty. It might void it.

Installed both and it does certianly seem quicker.

fasterfirefox installed no problem with microb rstarting after 10 seconds, but when installing speeddns, having pressed 'restart' it just seemed to wait there. After 30 seconds or so, I closed down all instances of Microb, started it up and speeddns was there on the addons page.

Nice 'easy' way of speeding up browsing:)

how is speed dns different from just putting google dns or opendns in your resolv.conf?

It resolves the DNS for every link BEFORE you click on them.
This will spare the DNS resolve time for any link you might click, and thus will make clicking the links feel faster.

Well this is new. Im afraid you're the only 1 had experienced this. Did you tried rebooting the N900?

This usually happens when installation is not complete. Reason why it can't restart is because the add ons can't run. uninstalling and reinstalling is a good idea. :)

I'm afraid there are no ways to disable that If you don't want it just don't install it. Just choose Speed Dns.

This is expected to drains battery a bit faster. But its not that noticable compared to overclocking.

There is fasterfox lite, without pre-fetching. I haven't tried, but it should be ok.

Not to worry. You can easily adjust the cache size by clicking the drag down menu then settings hen memory cache size. It will also help clearing your cache from time to time.

i have downloaded the fasterfox plugin its in the microb addon list but there is no difference in speed for loading up pages with or without . i have also tried the Speed DNS plugin but same no result.
how to check if the addons are working? they are in the addon list and enabled too. need some guidance from experts

Since you have done the method's of Carlito. After you have restarted check again in /home/user/.mozilla/microb/extensions then install the add-ons and manually restart microb. Manually means after you press restart microb close down all the window and start microb again.

i manually restart the microb .

The result remained.

Is very weird that i already delete all the files in extensions folder.

To some users who can't make the addons works. I'm really sorry I honestly don't know what causing the problem why you could not make the addons works :(

Yesterday i moved the microb to Free up rootfs space (http://wiki.maemo.org/Free_up_rootfs_space).
Worked really good, got almost 14 Mb extra on rootfs.
Microb still opened fast but loading pages took a while.
Searched for a way to speed up browser.
Installed both Add-ons Fasterfox 3.9.8 and Speed DNS as in first post.
Opening pages is now back as before, thx Garcel

This is strange after installing this adds-on on MicroB Opera browser wont open. Must notice that for the install I´ve downloaded them with Opera and after that install them because it wasn´t working with MicroB.
I`ve allready uninstall and reinstall Opera but still doesn`t work

At first it didn't work for me also. Try with the cursor, it worket like that.

But the problem It´s not the installation of the adds on the problem is that now Opera don´t work anymore

Works for me. Try uninstalling and installing Opera again. This shouldn't have conflicts with Opera at all.

I´ve downloaded them with Opera and after that install them because it wasn´t working with MicroB.

Could it be because these Add-ons are for Mozilla Firefox...
I opened first post on my N900 with the microb and installed them,

At post #42 (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1007392&postcount=42) and also first post maybe you'll find a sollution

But I didn´t installed them in Opera just download them and afterwards install in Microb !

Edit:
Solved uninstall and deleted the .opera folder reinstall and it seems to work fine. It must have been something I´ve done when downloaded de adds on with opera Im goin to try them again Thanks

Nice extension. :)

MicroB is using the pipelining-function of firefox and is already activated, but I set the maxrequests to 8.

How to:

type about:config in MicroB
searching for pipelining
...pipeling, ...pipelining.ssl and ...proxy.pipeling are already sets as true
set ...pipelining.maxrequests to 8 (or more? i think more is not supported/effect anything?!)

I know this tric by speeding up firefox on Windows but I do not know if it also speed up Maemo Browser :)
