Well, it does the best to erase the flash data

Could you please elaborate on that? Do you know how the flasher actually works? And how is the comprehensive reset different from the zeroizing procedure. I find this stuff quite interesting:)

i bought an N9. i killed the OS on the second day. after a long time i figured out that my phone has different firmware like on the SIM-card tray (059L4M9). 059L4M9's region code is 280(?) or what while i got the phone with a preinstalled generic firmware what region code is 005. so i have no clue what was the original firmware, i only saw the version and the region code. then i flashed my knocked out phone with a DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin and a DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.418.2_PR_LEGACY_418_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin which contained my phone's CMT. now i killed my phone again cause i did an apt-get dist-upgrade what removed some serious packages from the OS...what a mess.

so now i have some questions. i really want to stop this terrible flashing game series:
1. afaik the hardware is the same: what is the difference between region firmwares? exactly 001 vs. 005.
2. i'm a European guy so if somehow possible: how the hell i can change my phone's firmware from 005 to a 001? i would like to install a 059J203 firmware.
3. what are the difference between CMTs?
4. why i need another firmware to install CMT while any other firmwares contain CMT's?

The flasher is a command line tool, so you need to open the command prompt (cmd.exe) and from there execute the commands e.g:
flasher -f -F main.bin --erase-user-data=secure

Somethings didtn work...
i've double click exe. working 1 second then stop.
then open cmd (administrator permission) cd to C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher. run the command in the first page (set PATH="C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher;%PATH%") then try to use the command flasher -i
didnt works. cmd says: "flasher" non č riconosciuto come comando interno o esterno,
un programma eseguibile o un file batch. (sorry it's italian)
seems like flasher not installed, right?

i think i've have already did, right?

edit

I bought two N9 phones from China for Xmas. They were supposed to be "original" and unlocked.

One phone has firmware Pr 1.3 (40.2012.21-3.249.1_PR_249)
This has Vodafone splash screen and my SIM doesn't work in it.

The other phone has firmware PR 1.3 (40.2012.21-3_PR_003)
and has Chinese programs. Yet, I can use my SIM card in this one.

Can I flash them with a global or latin american firmware?
Will flashing remove the Vodafone problem?

So, after doing a little searching, I found out that the code on one of the SIM holders is 808 RM-807 Product Code 059M7K7. That is why the holder seems to fat when inserted. It's very hard to insert and remove. It's not even for this phone. This also means I don't know the variant code needed for the firmware. Can I install these : DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.LTA_EMMC_LTA

DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM

RM696_059J260_40.2012.21.3_001.vpl

on these phones?

Did you find out currently installed FW with 'flasher -i'?

Be careful flashing the chinese variant phone, as cmt (telephony) on these may not be downgraded. So could produce problems when flashing other FWs (lots of info/threads here).

For sure you cannot flash the global001 image at all. Downgrade is not possible.
For the PR249 variant phone you need to find a higher FW version (possibly Switzerland 480, my variant ;)).

Please inform yourself a bit more before flashing anything (as especially for the chinese one you may break something).

"Nokia Conporatino". Upside-down datamatrix 2-d code.... Original? Yeah sure! :)

As said already, forget what's written on the SIM holder and just use the 'flasher -i' command.
Probably it would be better to keep the one with 003 variant (i.e. Chinese) apart for now as you would need to flash the cmt, which isn't possible, and instead work on finding a FW variant suitable for the other phone.

Did not have a look at all to the SIM holder pictures.
But as this one is the 808 holder the phones itself may still be 'original' (a lot were produced in China).

Okay, I have done a flash - i to both of the phones. Could someone send me an appropriate link from Mr.Crab.net of a FW I could load on this non-chinese phone to remove the branding and the SIM card problem from Vodafone?

Okay, I have been reading all over this site and the internet about flashing. I understand about choosing a FW that is higher than mine.

The first page of this thread says:"Additionally, there is a content image ("eMMC image") for most countries/regions that can be used to reset the user data on the phone and restore the wallpaper/music/map files that originally shipped with it. It is possible to "mix and match" any content image with any main firmware image, which is useful for installing your home country's maps on an imported N9. If you don't require preinstalled maps, or if Nokia doesn't produce a content image for your country (e.g. US and Canada), you can save time by using the content image for product code 059J1Z5 ("rest of world"), which doesn't include map files."

So, my two questions are, if my firmware on the phone is DFL61_Harmattan_40.2012.21-3.249.1_PR 249,
can I use DFL61 HARMATTAN 40.2012.21-3.348.2 PR LEGACY 348 ARM RM-696 PRD signed.bin from N9 Rm-696 Country Variant Argentina Ar Black deepskd v4 --Product Code : 059L4L3 ? Does any of the "deepskd v4" mean something particular that I don't understand?

OR use the DFL61 HARMATTAN 40.2012.21-3.299.1 PR LEGACY 299 ARM RM-696 PRD signed.bin --from N9 RM-696 Country Variant Australia AU Black 16GB V1 - MR
Product Code : 059L698?
Again, the V1 - MR confuses me. I don't want another "rebranding" of the phone.

Also, can I use the DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.LTA_EMMC_LTA instead of the one that is listed with the FWs?

Thank you in advance for your patience and reply.

peterleinchen
2015-01-03, 22:06
You can fetch any/every/doesntmatter eMMC image you like and mix with every FW.

No idea about ,deepskd'.
But as the second one also has some nice addition and both are Country Variants I would not care.
A country variant is made to match all needs (possibly also restrictions!) of all providers in a country. So this verson will work in specified country for all providers. (it is not a global firmware, but close to that regarding the country)

About your chinese I would not touch it if it works for you. You may find a lot of info in this thread and also external threads about that problem.

One last question. Do I only need those two files (FW & eMMC) or do I need any others from the page with the FW?

peterleinchen
2015-01-03, 22:39
For flashing those two are sufficient.

But there is also one file (do not remember name) with md5sums of flashing files. Those may be necessary to check a broken download (can produce weird flashing errors).

Regarding the firmwares, generally all the variants with numbers 200 or higher are for operators, so in principle you always run the risk to get a 'branded' version (although, some operators are more discreet and don't put their logo everywhere).
So, probably it would be better for you to have a good look at the list of variants available, sort them by increasing variant number, and try them one by one, starting from lowest number.
When you find one that seems decent, be happy, otherwise go on flashing the next one in the list.

One last question. Do I only need those two files (FW & eMMC) or do I need any others from the page with the FW?

For chinese 003 phone, I would keep in 003 line and just change language from UI from chinense to english. Thats the only way to keep cmt (and sim-card working).

I suspect that the other phone has been 003 originally and someone has just tried to flash random firmware in it (that would explain non-working sim). So thats more trickly one, basicly if it has been 003 and someone has flasher some newer non-003 firmware in it, then you will never get sim working, ie you have wifi-tablet or brick in your hands. But if your lucky and it has not been 003 chinense from beginning, then you might get lucky by reading this forum.

No since you cannot downgrade back to 003 if it has been flashed with some newer one.

Here's something very strange. I have an N9 that I bought here in Mexico. [The glass is damaged and is the reason I ordered the other two phones from China.] The SIM card holder says it is an 059L449. The QR code on the device confirms that it is an 059L449. But identifies it's firmware as generic Latin America: DF61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3 PR 001, not the product code variant of DFL61 HARMATTAN 40.2012.21-3.420.4 PR 420 for the N9 RM-696 Telcel MX MX Black V3.
About 6 months ago, I tried to get Telcel (Evil Carlos Slim corp) to unlock the SIM and they couldn't do it. So, I took the phone to someone who had an ATF dongle and used a service to brute force the code. I know that they didn't download or install another firmware. How did the phone change (downgrade) to a generic FW?

Thats easy: they changed from PR1.2(or older) 420 variant to PR1.3 001, as its not downgrading if you upgrade from PR1.[0-2] to PR1.3 001, even if you 'downgrade' virtually, but in fact PR1.3 001 has newer timestamp than any PR1.[0-2] variant.

PS. There is also an exploit for non-003 variants that could be in theory used to downgrade even PR1.3 variants back to 001, but that doesn't help on your 003 cmt devices.

Well atleast you could ofcourse exchange china bricks working display to your 001 version :).

Well, thanks again to everyone that helped me with my flashing. I flashed the Australian Vodafone FW to a country variant of Australia. from PR 249 to PR 299. The Vodafone splash screen went away and no more Vodafone icon in the application list, but the SIM card still doesn't want to work. I put a piece of paper behind the card (made for a tight squeeze to get the holder back out). Yet, the phone still doesn't see the SIM. No error. No nothing. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Hi rainisto, downloaded the firmware file and this happened;
1. The flash was successful (Windows 8) but on starting, I still had some texts, calls, some pop-ups for N9Qtweak were still active. (when I do a firmware flash, am I not supposed to loose even the messages.
2. Upon noticing the above, I flashed the firmware and the emmc and somehow, everything was cleared but the problem that led me to flashing is still there - camera not responding, even after enabling the gps from settings. Says, 'camera is reserved by another application'

Any idea how I can stop GPS completely and/or get the camera to work.

Thanks for your continued support.

If camera doesnt work after successfully flashing firmware + right emmc, then most likely camera module is just broken and needs hardware repairshop.

You can tell the country variant by the code written under your simtray.

You may well find that maps need to be updated to 00.02.50.103 (July 2013 last available) so waste of time downloading EMMC Alps.bin if has older map content in which case you may be better grabbing EMMC for 059J1Z5 ("Rest of world"). See this resource: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82693

They are (slightly) different firmwares. No chance to ever go from a higher number to a lower number (okay, one exception: M$ brings out PR1.4 :D).
About the differences of 001 (global) and 005 (???): no idea, but they are different releases.

If it is asian variant I would be very cautious flashing any other firmware to that device.

please check out mrcrab.net for more details.

of course i know how is it going. i had enough of it and i flashed it with a 009 variant (EU 2, or what). don't know which variant better, looks like same. some bugs disappeared.

but i can't understand something: if i want to charge the phone while it is off it automatically switches on. not always but usually happens this. when it switches on the screen freeze and i cannot type my pin and after a few seconds the phone restarts. what the heck is this?

another strange thing: the alarm is a crap! i can't use it while the phone is off. it just switches on, asks the pin and nothing happens. doesn't alarms. what the bloody hell?

Forget polish language!
Look for a FW with same or higher Number.
Every FW you can set after flashing to the language you like.

If it say Downgrade disallowed thats the problem what you can read here on every page.

YOU CAN'T FLASH A LOWER FW-Number!

As wrote already, you should choose a proper variant of the f/w to flash. Can you show the whole message that you get from flasher? That will show what's the current f/w the device has and what are you trying to flash.

I'm trying to flash my phone because of "Device not working properly" comes up when i start my phone. I've tried to flash it with windows xp and 7.

The problem is, when it's time to connect the phone to pc, nothing happens in the flasher, it just says the "suitable usb interface (bootloader/phonet) not found, waiting", and my phone first starts with the nokia logo and the pc starts to install drivers or somethin and then stops that, then the phone goes to this state (sorry it's in finnish):

Have you tried installing Lumia Software Recovery Tool (Win 7 box only) as should include necessary flashing drivers ( yes, it is compatible N9) for it to recognise device?

BTW, why not just plug in the charger and then turn the device off. It continues to charge (at least in my case) w/o waking up the device.

That brings up a question I always had: is there a USB mode that can be set (via Coderus enhanced status bar) such that when plugging a charger to an OFF device it does not wake up but continues to remain OFF while charging?

(Please forgive this slight off topic :D )

That's the default mode. When the device is OFF and you plug it to a charger it will boot up to ACT_DEAD mode which means there is no UI, just the charging indicaor. When the charger is removed, the device powers OFF again.

Actually to get the device to begave differently, to wake up when plugged to charger requires extra tweak to init.

That's interesting. I have two devices and neither one behaves that way. Both wake up when first plugged in. I do have several changes installed in those devices like Coderus Aegis hack, unrestricted UI & power menu, so not sure if those are responsible. Is there a way to put the device in a persistent ACT_DEAD mode as you mentioned above?

Oops! I said "closed it down". *clears throat*.

Let me phrase what the google code page says: "Nokia was closed the server and not allowed public access.

NaviFirmEx won't work anymore!!!

I don't have the time to maintain this project anymore, sorry."

I think that means that they restricted certain servers from public acces. And the reason you are able to get the files on NV+ is because they may have mirrorred the server. Though I may not be correct. That is just my assumption. I still don't see why using NV is faster for you though.

Rob, You can export the partitions to your Linux via USB when you can telnet in.

1.) Enter one of the following commands to export the partition:
"echo /dev/mmcblk0p1 > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/gadget/lun0/file" # This is for MyDocs partition
"echo /dev/mmcblk0p2 > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/gadget/lun0/file" # This is for root partition
"echo /dev/mmcblk0p3 > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/gadget/lun0/file" # This is for home partition

2.) exit from the telnet connection

3.) Disconnect the USB for about one second and reconnect it

What wil happen, the partition will be detected by Linux and automatically mounted. (if not, you can look it up from dmesg and mount it manually)

After copying what you need form the partition, you can again set the IP addredd, telnet to the device and export the next partition.

If you have lots of storage space it is of course best to back up all three partitions, when you get the new/repaired device back it will be EXACTLY in the same state that your old device was when you upload back the backups. "sudo tar -cvf <filename> <mountpoint>" is good way to do that.

At last, after 5 or 6 ( no sleep no eat :D ) hardly days workings, testings and lookings for, i just found the way to solve the problem with Nokia N9 cmt problem during flashing.

Yea,till it i red many post from many forums from nice guys :) Thank you at all!!!

So lets begin. I'll tell you just the way with which one i solved it - in most situations this problem with cmt happening with chines versions of Nokia N9 (ofcourse brand:)), that why. If any questions feel free to ask.

(I do all these in Ubuntu 12.04) Steps:
1) Go here (http://smartdevays.ru/official_nokia/4234-originalnaya-proshivka-dlya-nokia-n9-rm-696.html) (prefer with Chrome browser to translate to english, cause site in russian)

2) Go to the section For any "gray" smartphones and download one firmware file and one content(emmc) file (i prefer to download just firmware file,no need to flash emmc, but if you want and have a time and patienсе download and flash also emmc). Save this (them if u decide to flash firmware and emmc) somewhere in the folders of /home/user/. In my option this folder was Downloads (I prefer to clean the folder before putting there the flashing files.

3) I prefer...no, I INSISTENLY prefer to have flash operations on computers with LINUX OS. If You cant, so just find someone who using Linux distributins :) Maann))
You must install flasher.3.12....deb.
here (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php) you can download it. But something get wrong during downloads, i think tablets-dev site went down, never mind - if problems, then click to the file at the end of this post, download and install it.

4) So, after steps 1 and 2, do these:
a)make sure that phone is FULLY charged
b)make sure that you did step a) and detach your Nokia N9 from all connections - charging, usb.. just put your phone back.
c)open terminal, type
sudo su
If live-cd no need, if installed OS then type your superuser password and then type this
flasher -F TheFirmwareWhichYouDownloadedByStepTwo.bin --flash-only=cmt -f -R

5) If success Your log must be like that
root@aceraspire4935g:/home/penryn/Загрузки# flasher -F D2C89BF2_DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.418.2_PR_LEGACY_418_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin --flash-only=cmt -f

Success

If no success, just put here output, let us to see. In 99% if no success, then we will try download another firmware - if need, we will download one by one firmwares (in this time here (http://www.mrcrab.net/nokia/Nokia_N9.html?productID=4823499691&productType=RM-696) and try it again))) funny, but it will work 100% at last!

6) So after succes, just type
flasher -R
and wait - device will reboot and boots to OS. Yo will see that your network come back, you will be able type *#06# and get output. Your about product section will work fine and will shows IMEI and at last, you'll see that OS working fine, no have frozens, no have hitting, so no need to flash firmware!!! - by the way, I see that, after error cmt, the device top (wher the processor with flash) hitting very vell :) after this success, all getting fine.

This was guide for beginners with easy tongue:) I'm sorry from advanced users if in some places and sorry for not good english :) Although this guide is to NOT DEAD device. If you have a dead device, then its another story. I'll try to find easist way to alive dead devices and share here - to beginners ofcourse :)

Hi,

My N9 (059K1T4) has a Chinese firmware and CMT on it. I intend to flash a higher European firmware (009 variant?) then reflash the original 003 CMT. The firmware images on mrcrab.net are listed by product code, not variant. Can anyone point me toward a suitable product code or firmware? (Ideally UK)

i had the same problem before. you can upgrade to 009 of course.
for main firmware (MCU, region 009) you can use these variants for example:
RM-696 NDT SWITZERLAND WHITE 64GB (059M6M9)
RM-696 NDT SWITZERLAND MAGENTA 16GB (059K753)
RM-696 NDT SWITZERLAND CYAN 16GB (059K756)
RM-696 NDT SWITZERLAND BLACK 64GB (059K772)
RM-696 NDT SWITZERLAND BLACK 16GB (059K748)
you need only "DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_009-OEM1-958_ARM.bin"

for regional content (MMC/EMMC) you can use these variants:
RM-696 NDT UK IRELAND MAGENTA 16GB (059K1F5)
RM-696 NDT UK IRELAND CYAN 16GB (059K0W0)
RM-696 NDT UK IRELAND BLACK 64GB (059J186)
RM-696 NDT UK IRELAND BLACK 16GB (059J1Z7)
you need only "DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.UKIRELAND_EMMC_UKIRELAND.bin"

for modem (CMT) use one of these variants:
RM-696 NDT CHINA MAGENTA 16GB (059K1T4)
RM-696 NDT CHINA CYAN 16GB (059K164)
RM-696 NDT CHINA BLACK 16GB (059J250)
you need only "DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_003-OEM1-958_ARM.bin"

OR if the CMT above did not work for you try this one:
N9 RM-696 PRC China Unicom CN PRC CU Black v1 (059L5T5)
you need only "DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.418.2_PR_LEGACY_418_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin"

after download place all files in a folder and follow the tutorial step by step. do not forget to move Flasher to the same folder. you can also use my commands below after you prepared everything:
flasher -f -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_009-OEM1-958_ARM.bin --erase-user-data=secure
flasher -f -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_009-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.UKIRELAND_EMMC_UKIRELAND.bin --flash-only=mmc

flasher -f -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_003-OEM1-958_ARM.bin --flash-only=cmt
OR (use this if the previous not worked for you)
flasher -f -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.418.2_PR_LEGACY_418_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin --flash-only=cmt
and then reboot your phone to finish.
flasher -R

You have a chinese FW, no way to change this

Thank you for your response ViBE: very comprehensive. Sadly I've found that my N9 has a dead strip in its touchscreen (can't press U,J,N keys on keyboard) so it's being sent back. I'll have to wait for a refund/replacement before I can put the above advice into action.

To chilango: I know that I can't change the CMT portion of the Chinese firmware, but the rest can be replaced, as described in this thread.

sad to hear. mine is refurbished too but works perfectly. maybe they will give you an EU variant next time and flashing will be much easier. who knows.

So I have Chineese N9 which was flashed with:
DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.418.2_PR_418 (tag on SIM tray was 059J245, but real firmware checked with flasher, corresponding to DFL61... above tag: 059L5T6 = China Unicorn).

I was really unhappy to discover, that my new N9 from China (for backup of old beloved N9) was flashed with such a high variant.

NaviFirm+ shows, that only a few of branded firmwares could be used to flash my device:
T-Mobile Austria: variant 430 (059L6C3)
Telcel MX MX: variant 420 (059L449 spain)
Vietnam: variant 454

After a lot of reading on Maemo.org I discovered post about UbiBoot, which allow to use any kernel.

Ubiboot is installed now on China N9, and before I would invest my time, and perhaps do something stupid I would like to make sure, that my reasoning is correct:

With ubiboot,
- I have access in "maintenance mode" on N9 connected to Linux to all partitions.
- with flasher-3.5 I could extract firmware from eg. 059J1Z5, and copy all files to rootfs, to replace Chinese variant 418, and obtain N9 working with European 059J1Z5 version with variant 001???
- then I would need to flash "CMT only" from original 059L5T6 to be able to use GSM modem in Europe???

And in this way I would escape from "variant lockup" of my new Chinese N9??

Any suggestions and corrections of my assumptions highly appreciated :-).

If I am wrong I will go for flashing as described by VIBE a few posts earlier

sure. just follow that instruction above. and yes you cannot connect to the GSM network if you try to use non chinese CMT. of course you can use any other MMC/EMMC.

@VIBE

Just to confirm, as I am not sure what "Sure" in your post means:

1. After copying content of extracted MCU firmware image into rootfs partition, I will get eg. N9 that will went from variant 418 to variant 001?
2. Because it is Chinese version, after that I will not be able to connect to EU GSM networks, therefore I need then to flash "CMT only" part from original Chinese MCU firmware to be able to connect EU GSM.
3. After such operations, my phone will be variant 001?

oh i thought you want to change the current chinese firmware to eu 2. if you want this you cannot change to simply 001 eu variant. if you checked the thread's article (1st post) you saw the following:

001 - Europe (1), Latin/South America, South Africa
003 - China
005 - Asia/Pacific (incl. Australia/New Zealand, excl. China)
006 - Middle East
009 - Europe (2)
2xx, 3xx, 4xx - "Country Variant" and carrier-branded images

1. you have a 418 variant. that means that your current firmware is a branded chinese varian but the "basic" variant is 003. so you can flash your phone with higher basic variants 005/006/009.
2. yes, you only need the CMT from the chinese firmware cause the phone cannot use the RF modules with other CMT's.
3. you can change only to the same or higher variants. 009 recommended in this case (as i mentioned in my tutorial).

I've had a Chinese-region N9, and it was able to connect to 2G/3G networks in the UK with no problem. The need to "over-flash" with the Chinese CMT is just because downgrading to the earlier worldwide CMT (as part of a full reflash) doesn't work.

1. Well, mine is '1', It came at around €200, including keyboard.
2. I disagree, Windows 10 I do like actually.
3. You can install, even dual-boot Ubuntu
4. Most of the 'spy features' You disable during install (just need to be aware when it asks). Some (like wifi sharing between friends issue) you disable afterwards. I forgot during install, so I spent apx 1/2 hr disabling all that stuff.

How much efforts did you spent for disabling all the spy features?

What command have you used?

But, taking the symptom of unexpected shutdown into account, it may ne also a broken MMC chip.
Hopefully not, so possibly only a broken download of image file. Did you compare the MD5sum?

i would like to skip full flash if possible cause i have no any backups of apps, school stuff, phonebook, messages, etc. i tried to flash with already saved flash files what i downloaded long time ago with NaviFirm. now i downloaded again from mrcrab.net for comparison and the hash is same...so my files are fine. i used commands like:

sudo flasher -f -F main.bin --flash-only=cmt

i have no clue how can i fix this now.

Ah okay. Your device starts?
I assumed it does not. But looking at your command you really only want to flash cmt.

Okay, so when the device starts: what is so difficult to disable devicelock under Settings-Security-Devicelock?

But it might be HW failure of modem, too. :(

so my phone switched off meanwhile i had a phone call. then i tried a few times switch on. after entering the pin a few seconds later the phone always switch off...so i ended up typing the pin and the phone just worked fine in offline mode. then i tried with another sim cause. same happened. and after then i thought maybe something wrong with the cmt so i took a try with that. and then i got that message when i copied.

and why disable device lock so difficult? first off all i doesn't even know it was on. the other problem is that till i tried to flash cmt the phone cannot start in normal mode. after power on it warns me to "install a verified operating system" or something like that...that's why i can't go on and switch off the lock, can't backup, etc...

oh and yes. i have a bad feeling about this too

You can backup everything (manually).
But for contacts/messages/notes and so on there is no suport for N9 and sync with Notes/Outlook/... but only some "Cloud" sync, which I never touched.
So you need to research on TMO about possibilities.

PC Suite or the inbuilt backup application is far enough for me. i just want to know if i do a "Replace operating system (preserves user data)" flash does keep my sensitive stuff? cause the tutorial does not mention it but it mention that this method is good for system update. so in my opinion that means that the method keeps phonebook/messages. but would be good to know what "etc" means in this case...

Afair flashing only the firmware will wipe rootfs and hereby delete apps you have installed. But it does not touch the /home partition where your sensitive data resides (together with configs and user data of apps). Nor is MyDocs affected.

since my N9 is partially dead i try to figure out what should i do now. i'm not an Android fan. i really hate the whole platform for several reasons. buy a 4-8 cores device what slows down after a half year and only hard reset can fix it. tons of branded stuff, tons of adds. the whole era makes me angry. WP is another piece of crap. it's like an undead restricted Nokia and only the Nokia parts (like the camera) make sense. iOS...i hate all closed source commercial expensive crap.

i'm hesitate between a new N9 or a Jolla.
N9 pros: linux; still a good hardware which runs smoothly under the software; cool camera; nice UI; debian-like subsystem; one of the best offline maps; perfect (physical) size; and yes it's UNLIKE (for me)
N9 cons: no one cares about harmattan sadly; outdated maps and common apps

Jolla pros: linux; smooth software; not a bad UI; well optimised (as i heard); up to date
Jolla cons: still expensive; poor camera quality (as i heard); poor loco support; they planning to release a new phone but no details about when and what kind of hardware it will be, cause they are "transparent" (bullsh1t-.-) and no way to decide which device will worth the price; they ship retail package with white back cover, no way to choose...

while i make my decision i would like to test the OSs on N9. there are some Sailfish ports out there but i don't know too much about them. check the comment section here (http://reviewjolla.blogspot.hu/p/devices.html). and i also red a comment (https://together.jolla.com/question/128326/community-port-requests-2016/?answer=128881#post-id-128881) from locusf, but no one talking about details or results. maybe Nemo is an option too but not for me. and i still not found any fresh stable ports. i also hate the UI. it's not my taste. i'm a Harmattan fanboy. but if you found something interesting let me know.

Outdated offline maps beat the most up-to-date online-only solution any time, if you ask me. YMMV.

Flasher for N9 does not require installation; the 'flasher.exe' file you have should be run via Command Prompt. I strongly recommend that you read the first post of this thread to avoid all the possible hardships while flashing.

Hi,

First time N9 user (better late than never, eh? Still using my N900 daily). I've just bought an N9 on eBay and sure enough it needs a reflash. As soon as I inserted my SIM it has locked itself & is asking for the security code which is unknown by previous owner. Phone has been in her cupboard for a few years. Don't worry IMEI checks out fine so unit not stolen!

But I'm a little stumped as to how I might reflash given all the links I have tried for flashing software seem to be dead.

What are my options? Seller has advised I can return unit if I want, but I'd love to see it working again. Is Naviflash available anywhere these days?

Cheers,
Stuart.

EDIT: Well I've found a copy of Naviflash, but it's trying to access www.dsut-qa.online.nokia.com & that is obviously not going to work. so need to think harder about other options!

so you have an N9 and the seller cannot even tell the security code? you can find some basic firmwares here (https://bit.ly/n9backup). take a look. as far as i remember i have no EMMC for your region, but you can find the original main software. maybe someone will help in that case here.

btw NaviFirm is dead now cause Nokia started to reorganising their network sources in january and still no way to access for any official firmware servers.

Couldn't get my flasher.exe to recognise it on my Win7 machine, so I installed the .deb version (into Fedora LOL) and managed to flash it that way. Thanks so much for your help, I'm actually kinda excited to play with it now. Have wanted an N9 since they came out so should be great getting to know it. Might have a go at a Sailfish install if i get bored... Cheers!

Just to make sure. For the 001 variant of N9, I should flash

DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958
DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.NOMAPS_EMMC_NOMAPS
There is also:
DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.480.04.1_PR_LEGACY_480what's that?

Please update the OP with the recent mirrors, the ones provided are offline. Can I get the correct md5sums from anywhere?

Yes!
For the eMMC it does not really matter which one you use.

There is also:
DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.480.04.1_PR_LEGACY_480what's that?

That is the Switzerland Country Variant (the highest PR variant released, do only flash if there is no other available. Or you have a device with firmware already. Like me :))

And the md5sums/sha1sums?

If you trust me (and the version of DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_003-OEM1-958_ARM.bin that I have downloaded years ago on my phone) then

~ $ md5sum DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_003-OEM1-958_ARM.bin
ae99eb63c56eee0b44d48ad1cbd685ee

and

~ $ sha1sum DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_003-OEM1-958_ARM.bin

The eMMC checksums I have not at hand ...

I have some firmwares with md5sums on my site (https://silma.tk/soft/)
Though, I'm not sure, if md5 for variants 299, 341 and 480 are correct. If anybody can confirm that they are ok, please do it.

Hi.
I couldn't recall any posts regarding this so here I go.

I found that by scanning the BIDI code in the "About Product" option in the Settings menu you can obtain the IMEI number (it is already there) and the hardware version of the device, which can be useful in order to find an appropriate image to flash in the device, or if you have just lost the top covers of the device.

Regards.

I wonder what's a difference between "001 - Europe (1)" and "009 - Europe (2)" versions of FW? I guess Europe is divided, but I couldn't find how :-)

Hi everyone!

So, I opened a Christmas gift early from my spouse yesterday (heh), and to awe, I received a Nokla N9.

I want you to imagine a grown man literally running around the house, ecstatic that he finally, finally got his hands on one of Nokia's greatest Finnish devices.

So, obviously the Ovi Store is gone, and I start working my way around the phone. I learn that it can install Debian packages. Sweet! So, first thing I did, right out of the box, was install FasterN9. Well....

The package installed, and the phone rebooted. And rebooted again. And again. Now, my screen will only display the Nokia loading screen, then "Device not working properly. Try updating the device software with Nokia Software updater. If the problem persists, contact the nearest Nokia Care point.
Software problem (ohmd) too many reboots."

Needless to say, I feel like I've made a terrible, reckless error and I sincerely hope that one of you fine folks can help to unbrick me.

I've searched the forums as well as I could, but I may have missed somewthing (Please link me if I did!) but I had the craziest time just downloading the flasher tool! I've attempted to use the flasher tool with no success, when I run an elevated cmd prompt with flasher -i, all I receive is "Device is in Sync and connect mode, sending ADL reboot.
ERROR: ReadFile(65540) GetOverlappedResult() error 2 timeout 4975 ms
Unable to detect flashing interface: standing by for device reboot."

I don't know for sure that I have the right firmware downloaded. How can I tell which shipped with my device? I do remember that there was a one-word carrier name, and another word after that, on my lockscreen... before I broke everything. The model underneath my usb port cover says Model: N9 357923040124051, but Google finds nothing of that infromation. It is the black 16gb model, and I am 99.9% sure that I had the UK/Ireland version. On my SIM tray, I see 059L3N7 - 16GB

Sometimes an ominous orange light comes on the phone's back flash. I don't really know how else to describe what it looks like. :(

If anybody, ANYBODY has any advice, or links, or even RTFM's for me, please let me know. I only had a chance to hold this lovely phone for one day before breaking it...

Also, I currently have downloaded NaviFirmPlus_3.2 for Windows, and the file that I am assuming needs flashed is downloaded to my HD as E7FEB593_DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.UKIRELAND_EMMC_UKIRELAND.bin. I also have Flasher.exe.

I'm also installing Debian on my Raspberry Pi B+ in the hopes that it will have better luck with reviving my device. =/

Thank you for reading my ramble, and please please please let me know if you have any ideas. This is pretty terrible. :(

EDIT::: So, turns out I was simply attempting to install the incorrect firmware. Now everything is working fine :) Aside from getting rid of all this ovi-required stuff.... but I'll take what accomplishments I can get!

I do not really think that product code matters. All you need is to grab the last version of 001 variant (because of that table (https://silma.tk/fws/N9-variant-table-PR13.txt)) — the file will be named DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin — and flasher for Windows (which I think won't run on Win10, so try virtual machine or liveUSB with Win 7 or Debian).

As I wrote above, you need just flasher and firmware image. You may also want to bring back all the factory region-specific content (i. e. maps, wallpapers) – in that case you should download so-called content file (named DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.EURASIA_EMMC_EURASIA.bin in your case).
However, content file is optional, and the flashing process will go absolutely smoothly without one (not mentioning that such things are quite rare birds on the net).

Speaking about the site – it is fully functional at the moment, feel free to download. The thing is, you may see the certificate error (or not –
depends on your browser), so just ignore it (shame on me, I should have never had any business with StartSSL, but it is for another topic :) ).

For what it's worth, someone actually managed to get Sailfish 2.0.4 running on the N9, slow and unstable but running nevertheless: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MXU_WoqmvI

It's clearly possible to make it work, the question is who's going to put in the effort for a device which generally works fine already?

It's not "Broken Device", you cannot break N9 just by deleting files. :)
Windows does not recognize it because you are missing drivers.

As for Ubuntu, it should recognize it immediately, as drivers are built-in.

Are you running Ubuntu on virtual machine or baremetal?
If you use VM, then you need to make sure that USB is routed correctly from host to guest. (set up guest addons or something on virtualbox, I think...)
