Hey,

before you tell me, yes I know there are lots of threads about this, but I am not a dev, I have had my N9 2 months ago, I am still new to it and have nothing to do with the terminal, I was using N9QTweak and changing the text color, I accidentally wrote 0FF0D instead of 00FF0D so I got my N9 rebooting and rebooting and rebooting..etc. But I have created a backup before this, and I don't know how to flash my N9, please URGENT help!!

do the following using cmd on your pc:

run cmd as admin
cd c:/program files/nokia/flasher
flasher --enable-rd-mode --set-rd-flags=no-lifeguard-reset

now once it boots up you can reverse the tweak and it should work.

also once you've managed to reverse it in cmd enter:

flasher --disable-rd-mode

No, I told you 'I am new to my phone' and 'I don't know how to flash my N9' then why the hell do I need flasher?!! :P

You need it because without flasher you cannot fix your problem. Or you can you you take your device to nokia care for reflash.

I though that N9Qtweak would have warnings, that you shouldn't tweak if you don't know how to recover. But maybe it doesn't have them... :)

Slightly out of topic, if you are using MAG's Unrestricted UI and MT-Toggles, should just stick to all his mods and don't mix it up with Coderus', I went through reboot loop hell too.

Anyway, I wonder if thread starter had enabled Root-SSH access? If he did, he would at least would have ROOT access via SSH client and theoretically be able to restore the files, no?

However, I only know how to access this via wifi not USB, but am I correct to assume that we can also access this via USB? Anyone?

you typed enabler instead of enable. Anyway just reflash the device. It'll work better for you. Refer to the comprehensive flashing guide for instructions...

Friends,

Just to share some feedback from my experience.

I got into a reboot loop as well, just yesterday. I was using N9QT, and then also installed MAG's repositories to install MT-Toggles, Music-Toggle, etc. Basically it appears that I committed the same error as the quoted post, above.

What I did is (before attempting to try the instructions from thedead1440's post) to flash only the RootFS, i.e. from this link in the Wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/Flashing_N9#Replace_operating_system_.28preserves_ user_data.29 (Replace Operating System - preserves user data). Though this didn't preserve any "already-installed" apps, the rest seemed intact. Worked well for me. :)

What were kept intact, upon inspection:

1. Contacts
2. Email Accounts that I enabled (and the emails)
3. Chat Accounts (from the "Accounts" app) that I enabled
4. Music, Videos, Documents, SMS/Conversations

What were NOT kept intact, upon inspection:

1. Developer mode got reset to "disabled" or "uninstalled" state (including Terminal and SDK Connectivity Tool)
2. Installed apps (N9QT and any customizations made through N9QT, installed apps from the Nokia/Ovi Store)
3. Extra repositories such as Apps-for-Meego, MAG's repositories
4. Personalized settings, i.e. Brightness, enabled wi-fi connections, brightness, etc.

So lesson learned: do not mix up the different approaches to having unrestricted-system-ui (i.e. MAG's version, N9QT version) on your N9. Hope this may help someone in the future. :)

You asked how to turn off the blinkling LEDs...

Anyway since you attempted to flash can you flash again and post the output? I'm quite sure your flash didn't go thru' successfully...

If you don't want to flash but fix the reboot loop then I need to know what you did that caused the reboot loop in the first place...

Did you apply any tweak like unrestricted system-ui? or change clock colours or something like that before you had the reboot loop?

Did you apply any tweak like unrestricted system-ui? or change clock colours or something like that before you had the reboot loop?

no i didn't apply any tweak. I used change colour of incoming and outgoing icons but this i had done week back since the revoot loop started. In rd mode i have cleared my device but i m not getting any soln.

thedead1440
2012-10-17, 03:35
clear device doesn't fix any system files that were modified...only icons were changed are you sure?

danested
2012-10-17, 20:51
I also ended up in a reboot loop after I entered my color code along with #... But this thread helped me fix it though :) its working fine now.

@N9freak, I had similar issues, first I had the Wrench, then I played around with the only button that really matters(the power button) and it started right in.

Once done, when I disabled the dev mode with "flasher --disable-rd-mode", I had the flickering LED light which I believe was a form of error reporting... sort of like the beeps that the CPU gives when there's a hardware fault. I played around with the power button and removing/replacing the USB to the comp, and my phone just booted fine. Rebooted once to be sure.

A wee bit off topic but I hope it does help:
I had this problem where everytime the screen locked, unlocking would not turn on the display, even though the phone was on and the phone would ring on call, there'd be no other sign of life.

Rebooting would make it behave normally until it locks. I found that locking it yourself once with the power button somehow seems to resolve this... Has anyone else faced this?

[Edit]
The first time this happened to me I was just reading on Edurite, and browsing on the stock browser.

The second time this happened was now, i.e after fixing the reboot loop.

I have Inception, MAG's toggles, QT. Nothing against any of them :D

i have again flashed my phone but cant get away with reboot loop
here is the output

I have the same problem.

I had extensively modded with N9qt, then suddenly my n9 rebooted, and that was it, I could not reboot.

I had an open-kernel, so reflashred ernel. No effect

Reflashed rootfs, 10 times, no effect

Reflashed rootfs, erased user data and flashed emmc, 10 times, no effect

tried different rootfs. no effect.

The n9 reboots, sometimes to the start of the first tour, then just reboots again.

RD mode seems faulty as well. No wifi, cannot run most applications, so it is not even useful as it is. Disabling rd mode means continuous reboots.

Am going crazy, right now is not the best tiem to change phones...

EDIT: Wouldn't flashing so many times remove any mistakes I made? n9qtweaks is not working in rd mode, so cannot do a restore. And am not sure what caused the initial problem

ssciberras,

Since you have attempted to do a reflash do you mean you don't have any data to lose right?

If so can you post the output here of your reflash so that it proves the reflash really went through...I suspect you have had errors in your reflash...After all nobody flashes their phone 10 times and still has the same software issue...

And RD mode is only half-functional, no wifi, some apps do not work.

Could it be faulty?

Hi there,

Could You Maybe give Me some advice? My N9 has switched off because of low battery power and when I tried to switch it on again after leaving it on charge for a while it just brings up the Nokia Logo with a wrench icon beneath it, then a yellow warning triangle with a message about software and it switches off again. I have tried to flash it in windows and linux but does not work because it is not detected by the USB?

I would appreciate any help to get this phone back to Life.

Hi when you plug it in for flashing, did you plug it in after the "Suitable device/phonenet not found" message appeared?

After plugging in what appears on your PC and Device?

I tried that, I even left thee phone for days, I stripped it apart completely, removed the battery, checked the IC's etc. Assembled it again. Just does the same..
I read somewhere that this is happening because apparently the Battery is flat and it is in RD Mode. But how do I get it out of RD Mode if the PC doesn't detect it. Even when I try to charge it with the normal charger, it does nothing at all.

One thing to check if your hardware doesn't have an issue is when you plug in a wall charger does the white LED blink?

One thing to check if your hardware doesn't have an issue is when you plug in a wall charger does the white LED blink?

If it doesn't it means your battery, usb port or something isn't connected properly... You may then need to re-check your hardware set-up or give it to Nokia Care...

That is what I said, nothing happens.. No blinking, nothing...
Problem is the USB Port is so concealed it is difficult to see a problem on it even after dismantling the phone..

Use the Fix-Malf mode or MOSLO boot to fix your filesystem.

To use flasher on the device it needs to be switched off. (to verify that it really is off, press the power button for longer than 8 seconds. When it is really powered off, the led will light up for short period when you quickly press the power button)

When your devide is off, leave it off, start flasher and only then connect it to USB.

Yes, that and the other way is http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1313240&postcount=457

However, that also kind of requires you to have linux to build the initramfs, but the actual use of the MOSLO-based mainatance mode works also with windows.
(or at least it should work, I have no windowsies so I have never tested it with those...:))

Propably the easiest is to install Ubuntu, there is so much support to be found on the net for it. I would go for the version 12.04, that's an LTS (LongTermSupport) release, meaning it will get updates for next five years.

Of course it also depends on the laptop you have, how powerful that is. I use mainly Lenovo T60/T61 machines, which run it quite nicely. (intel core2, about 2GHz, 2GB memory...)

If you have something older, then maybe install Ubuntu 10.04 or some Xubuntu-version.

Installing flasher is quite easy on ubuntu machines, it is just one deb file. If you cannot find it elsewhere, you can get it from me at http://www.swagman.org/juice/flasher_3.12.1_i386.deb

BTW my wife also uses Ubuntu as her daily driver, we have no windows-machines at home.

OK, a bit of clarification, just to see what is happening:
Which method did you use, booting the "Fix MALF state boot" (http://wiki.meego.com/N950/Fixing_MALF_state) or the "MOSLO boot" (https://toosa.swagman.org/svn/sillykbd/TRUNK/moslo/) ?

The first method should export 3 partitions for you, the second does not export partitions directly but it allows you to telnet to the device and export the partitons manually.

If you used the first method and did not see any automatically mounted partitions, it might just be that your linux did not mount them automatically. Use command "dmesg" to see if the partitons were detected correctly. (there should be some entry about /dev/sdb drives)

Allright, I see you got it working :)
Now, your /dev/sdb drives are the partitions from the device:
/dev/sdb1 is MyDocs
/dev/sdb2 is /root
/dev/sdb3 is /home

You need to create tar files for backup, and you need to do that as root so that the permissions are kept correctly.

Did your system mount the partitions automatically? If not, then you need to mount them manually, for example:

sudo mkdir /mnt/mydocs
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/mydocs
sudo mkdir /mnt/root
sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/root
sudo mkdir /mnt/home
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/home

Then, go to the mounted directory and make the backup:

sudo su ## this is done to get root permissions...
cd /mnt/mydocs ## or to the correct directory, whatever...

## now I am assuming that your homedir is /home/wallace...
tar -cvf ~wallace/mydocs.tar .

## then, when it's been done, do the other partitions:
cd /mnt/root
tar -cvf ~wallace/root.tar .
cd /mnt/home
tar -cvf ~wallace/home.tar .

## Note that there is a single dot (.) as the last character on
## the tar statement... Do not forget that!

Okay, when you have done that, You will have three largish files in your home directory. All of the N9 content is backed up there as a snapshot of the device state.

The following steps depend on what you would do, but whatever you decide, all the stuff of the device is backed up now.

The command to unmount is "sudo umount /dev/sdb1", and same for sdb2 and sdb3.
Not that of course you must not be in the directory when umounting.
After that, just reboot.

juiceme
2013-01-31, 18:06
Now, what happens when you boot the device, you will get the so called "big scary warning", the device knows that you have used open mode rescue kernel, and each time you boot you will see the warning.

It is completely harmless, though, even as it says something about voiding your warranty.

What I suggest you would like to do, is the following; It is fairly easy to remove the warning forever, and also set your device to open mode for best performance and tweakability.

1.) First you need to flash the devide totally clean, using the rootfs+emmc flashing. Aftre this the device is in "totally clean state"
2.) then, you should disable the "big-scary-warning" forever. This must be done when device is clean as it cannot be done in open mode.
3.) After that, you should flash the open mode "aegis-neutering" kernel which gives you capability to run real root.
4.) Then, boot again the device with the rescue kernel and restore the backups from tarfiles. This way all your previous settings, files and applications are restored.
5.) Last thing to do, remove the few aegis files that store your saved passwords. You need to regenerate these with new open mode keys.

Doing something wrong because it stays in reboot loop with that big fulpage warning. Do I have to disconnect USB cable...

juiceme
2013-02-01, 05:57
Yes, when you boot the device after using rescue kernel, you need to remove the USB cable first.

Which warning is it, is it the MALF warning or the Openmode warning?

If the device shows the MALF warning you need to check for the file "/var/malf" from the root partition (/dev/sdb2). If that is present it means that in boot phase the device has detected that a file has been modified.

The way it is done, is that most of the important binaries and configuration files are hashed and the hash is stored to a refhash list file. (that's /var/lib/aegis/refhashlist)
When the device boots, it will check the hashes of that list against the files, and if there is a difference it will show the MALF warning and refuse tpo boot.
Even if you change back the file you modified, the "/var/malf" may not be removed and the device will again show the warning on the second boot... that's why you need to rehash the modified files and remove the /var/malf file to get the device to boot.

Using open mode is so much simpler, there is no need to worry about MALFfing the device while tuning something.

Is there any chance that enabling and disabling rd mode will ruin the phone? I don't really understand some of things people are saying in this post. It's probably just me being paranoid but I'm worried that if this method doesn't work, then reflashing won't work.

Also, do I keep the phone plugged in after enabling rd mode when it boots? And then do I disable it while the phone is turned on after I've reverted the tweak? Or do I turn the phone of then disable rd mode?

juiceme
2013-04-22, 13:05
Please specify what do you mean by rd mode :D

There are various r'n'd flags that can be activated, it would be helpful to know what are you meaning to do...

Most propably you cannot "ruin your device" by whatever you are trying, there are only few sure ways to kill your N9 and most of those are related to playing with CAL.

Hi Guys .... I have come with great hope to this page .... I have a Nokia N9.
A couple of days back one of my friends installed Andriod on it and it slowed down the phone so he tried to flash it and used meego on it for a day and suddenly it stopped working and now its just doesnt seem to start. Whenever i Connect the phone to the PC the charging light comes on and as soon I take out the cable the light goes of. I have tried to flash the phone my self through windows flasher and I get the below error (see screenshot)

below is the extract from the error message
"ERROR: SU_GET_PARAMETER_REQ terminated with error code 7: Object not found
ERROR: Unable to get SU_PARAM_BATTERY_LEVEL
ERROR: Begin update failed
ERROR: Failed to flash images"

Now i searched online and a lot of people say that it could be a problem with the proximity sensor. Now before I go to a mechanic i need to know if there is anything lese that i can try since Nokia India wont even touch the phoen cause it was never even launched in India and was bought overseas. Also will using Phoenix software to flash the phone help ... If anyone could guide me it would really be helpful. I need to bring this wonderful phone back to life and install sailfish on it > Guys need your input
