View Full Version : Maemo-Mapper needs its own forum

There's a 39 page (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4691) general discussion on a large number of diverse Maemo-mapper topics, which is no way to locate information...

I think it is one of the more important apps on the N800, and should have its own sub-forum (are sub-forums possible? If not it would have to be parallel to Apps, which is slightly less easy to justify).

It would also be great if there were a Wiki page for usage tips and instructions beyond the built-in help. I'd start one, but can't decide whether it should be on this site's Wiki (which looks a bit stagnant), or maemo.org (ditto).

i.e. If I were in charge ;), there'd be a forum for MM, and a sticky post at the top of it directing everyone to the Wiki page for tips and instructions, and asking them to contribute.

Great suggestion. I'm wondering what would be good for everyone:

1. Forum for most commonly discussed apps
2. a new wiki for apps using the MediaWiki engine (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki) (what we currently have)
3. a new wiki for apps using the forum-based engine (http://www.nuhit.com/forums/nuwiki.php?do=book.view&bookid=9)

I think a forum for each of the major apps, or perhaps just significant categories (web, mapping, IM, VOIP) would be great.

I don't think the Wiki engine matters too much. It's good to reduce the barrier to entry by having one set of credentials on both the forum and wiki, but I think you've already done that.

My only problem with the Wiki on this site is that it doesn't appear to be updated much. This happens a lot with other projects I've been active on: I think Wikis should be used for HowTos, but inevitably the information ends up in forum threads instead. I think that all can be done is to encourage the Wiki use with links in a top level sticky and then by example. e.g., a sticky at the top of each saying something like:

Subject: Read Me First
This is the forum for discussing X applications. Information and HowTos about X apps are here:

app1
app2
app3

Please share knowledge by posting and updating HowTos in the Wiki, and post discussions and questions here in the forum.

Forum posts always seem to win out over Wiki's as far as being updated goes. I agree with the idea of having broad sub-categories though such as Mapping, VOIP etc instead of application specific.

Both the forums and Wiki.

Obviously Wiki needs to be updated regularly. Could be a nice idea to link with maemo.garage updates.
