View Full Version : [Announce] cuteRadio - A user-friendly internet radio player

marxian
2014-06-05, 02:05
Following the closure of the Nokia Internet Radio service, I decided to finish my internet radio player. I originally planned to include recording features, but I don't have time to complete those right now.

cuteRadio is a user-friendly internet radio player.

Features include:

Around 30,000 stations included. Stations can be edited, and additional stations can be added manually.
Search stations and browse by genre, country and language.
Access recently played stations.
Add stations to your favourites.
Sleep timer.

The Harmattan version is available from OpenRepos.net (https://openrepos.net/content/marxian/cuteradio). The Symbian version can be downloaded from My website (http://marxoft.co.uk/cuteradio/symbian/).

cuteRadio is licensed under version 3 of the GPL. The source code can be found at GitHub (https://github.com/marxoft/cuteradio).

Thank you very much!

While waiting for the Maemo version, please consider some kind of integration with OMP for example allowing to save preferred stations into the same list.

Thank you Marxian for keeping Nokia's promise to support Symbian till 2016.
But will the Symbian version be available outside the Nokia store?
Microsoft has adjusted the usage policy and I feel not encouraged to log in and transfer even more user data to them as they may close the Nokia store soon after and run off with their harvest.

I don't have OMP installed, but I imagine it uses MAFW for managing the internet radio stations. I'll have a look at it. :) It probably won't be in the first release.

That's quite easy to implement, at least in Harmattan and Maemo5 (I don't know anything about scheduling in Symbian). I'll try to include it the next release. :)

Great app, thanks! So your program use the same source for the radio stations list as Nokia and this source is free? I wonder why Nokia shut off the server, probably it costs 50 euro per year or less. Really embarrassing for Nokia. One question - which format use the app for the favorite stations? Can I place my one *.m3u or *.pls file as favorite station list somewhere?

cuteRadio uses its own local station database. Currently, there is no way to import stations from other sources, but you can add them to the database manually (press the '+' toolbutton).

Wow, too nice to be real :D

About radio streaming:
Something that always troubled me with the Symbian Nokia Internet
Radio was that it would drop connection on international stations where the N900 wasn't affected (ADSL in Vietnam)

A so called dedicated Airstream 10 internet Radio suffered the same issue as Nokia Internet radio.

Could you look into making the buffering as robust as the N900 media player internet radio? Or maybe a configurable buffer?

Again, thanks in advance.

Yes. Nokia Store no longer accepts new applications or updates. The Nokia Store QA staff may now be:

Sitting on a beach.
Sleeping in old cars and eating Soylent Green.
Testing Asha/Nokia X applications.

I'm using the Phonon APIs for playback (QtMultimediaKit APIs don't retrieve the ICY metadata). Phonon doesn't have a configurable buffer size, unfortunately. To implement that, I need to use my own IO device and pass it to the player. I have already done some work on that (required for the recording features), but the problem is that I also need to implement the MMS protocol (which many stations use).

can't wait to try it out.BTW will it be signed or unsigned as applist allows to publish both types?
Also AFAIK from the information on applist website, there is no QA as of yet because it was a alternate store of collection of applications already published in nokia store when it got launched.

Thank you.

I don't think there is support for Qt Components in S60 5th Edition, so I would need to write a new user interface either using QML or widgets. I have not targeted S60 5th Edition before, so I need to check that I have the necessary software tools to do it. Getting hold of these tools is not quite so easy these days.

You have a prediction for when it will launch?

It's hard to say. I don't know for certain what obstacles lie ahead. I haven't targetted S60 3rd/5th Edition before. I know the latest Qt version for S60 3rd Edition is 4.6.3. That shouldn't be a problem, but there could be bugs/limitations that I'm not aware of.

There are also some APIs that I'm not familiar with, such as utilising the Back/Menu buttons, how the application menu is populated etc. Maybe it's similar to Maemo5 and can be done entirely in Qt, or maybe it's totally different and I need to use native Symbian C++ APIs (I suspect the latter).

After I write the code, I need to find and install the toolchains for S60 3rd/5th Edition, then work through any build issues. Finally I have to test the application, except I don't have any S60 3rd/5th Edition devices.

I'm OK with all that. What really bugs me is that I have to do it in Windoze. :(

I get the same error, except in the Symbian version, which uses QtMultimediaKit instead of Phonon, so it looks like some codec issue with Phonon.

Well done! The only difference I've noticed is that the Symbian version do not show title and interpret and in the version for Harmattan this future works. Is there other limitations?

The missing metadata is due to the different multimedia frameworks used. QtMultimediaKit does not retrieve the ICY metadata, whereas Phonon does. Unfortunately, streaming MP3 using Phonon does not seem to work (error message is 'Download error'), so I must use QtMultimediaKit for now. When I have more time, I will investigate further, and perhaps switch to native Symbian APIs if I can't get Phonon to work.

Other than the metadata issue, the two versions are the same. :)

Saving favourites is working on my devices. Both are running Belle, but I'd be surprised if that makes a difference. The database is currently overwritten during installation, so if you installed the updated version (or just re-installed the existing version), you will have lost your favourites.

Check here if you need Symbian development tools:

a s60v5 port should be really easy: It supports Qt 4.7 and by default it has no Symbian components, only the default QtQuick 1.0
But there's a simple port of the Symbian components 1.0: http://forum.symbian-developers.net/qt-application-development/qt-quick-components-for-s60v5/
So it's more or less easy to port the S^3 version to this firmware.

s60v3 with Qt 4.6 supports no QtQuick at all, you can use:
a) native Avkon for the UI which is A LOT of work and it's completly Symbian C++ or try Carbide C++ 2.7, which has a WYSIWYG UI editor, and pure Symbian C++ for the logic.

However if you didn't use pure Symbian C++ before don't use this way, it requires a bit time to get into the CleanupStack, TRAPs, Descriptors, Two Phase Construction etc. and it's not that useful to learn this stuff in 2014.
Maybe CODeRUS can help you a bit if you have questions? My skills are OK but I am not an expert.

b) QWidgets, which have a native look an feel.
You need the old QtSDK 1.1 which has s60v3 support, 1.2 has v5 - Belle only.

c) There are other solutions like Flash, JavaME, WRT, .NET, Python, Ruby, Perl and Silverlight but I don't know if they support the audio streaming?

just a quick report...
While using the maemo version i can observe a mediamu/high cpu usage with the phone becoming a little bit warm after ~10 minutes (using a wifi connection) and battery level seems to go down quickly.

EDIT.

How did you populated the db and could it be updated?
Which sources are you using?

I've also been doing some testing on the Maemo version. From what top shows, while running, cuteradio tends to hover around 20% CPU, and pulseaudio stays between 20-25% CPU. I'm not seeing significant warming or battery drain here (although I haven't run for more than about half an hour at a time).

This is also on a wifi connection. My phone is sitting just a couple of feet from my wifi router though, so it might not need as much power...

Same results as Copernicus - for comparison, the same station, but listened to using OMP uses ~15 kB/s transfer and OMP doesn't exceed 5% CPU (pulseaudio, similar to Copernicus example, is 15-20% CPU).

Yep i can confirm the values, cumulative load is near 50-60% but seems to change a little for different streams.

When compared to OMP in fact it uses about 20-25% more cpu.

Temperature... probably a summer effect summed to cpu load.

MAFW (used by OMP) uses the DSP, whereas Phonon does not. This explains the difference in CPU load.

I can't remember where I obtained the list of stations (it was about 10 months ago). The station list is in tab-separated text format, and I wrote a simple shell script to create a SQLITE database and add the stations to it. The station list, script and resulting database are all in the source tarball.

The next update will have TuneIn integration (with other services possibly added later). The existing local database will be removed, and instead it will be possible to add stations from TuneIn to the database for local storage. This way, you can build your own local list of stations, instead of having 30,000 entries.

If you add the tunein search, please consider also tunein's pictures, these would give a nice playing experience.

One more request, do you think it would be possible to add a setting into the N900 build to chose between Phonom and MAFW?

I've already implemented logo support for the stations. These will be saved to the local disk if a station is added to the database.

It's not as simple as adding an option to choose MAFW. I need to implement a player that uses MAFW instead of Phonon. If/when I do that, I don't see any reason to allow Phonon as a choice, since there would be no reason to choose it.

mplayer "http://shoutcast.rtl.it:3020/listen.pls"

or:

dbus-send --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.mediaplayer /com/nokia/mediaplayer com.nokia.mediaplayer.mime_open string:"http://shoutcast.rtl.it:3020/listen.pls"

This would also solve any "codec not supported" issue and allow an easy customization and fix for all the supported platforms.

I'm not familiar with the internal differences of the players, but I have noticed that mplayer has issues with buffering that result in its abandoning a stream & going silent when taxed. I must use kmplayer, which must differ somehow, when reliability for not going silent is essential.

Existing favourites will be lost, but you can add them back via TuneIn. Once you add the stations to the database, you'll be able to browse them offline. The benefit is that you might only need 100 stations in the database, which will result in better performance than having 30,000 stations, where 29,900 are never even used. There is also a better chance that the stations will be up to date when you add them, and you can always update them using TuneIn if they ever stop working.

You can set the buffer size for mplayer with the 'cache' parameter, e.g

mplayer --cache=2048 $filename

This should help with any buffering issues. I don't know if KMPlayer changes the default buffer size when it uses the mplayer backend.

Great update (Harmattan)! A few issues, though:
-For me every time I update, i have to restart my phone or the app is practically unusable. "Application not responding" every tine i click anything. I don't have this issue with any other apps.
-When adding a podcast through tune in, the "adding" screen goes on forever. However, if you press cancel, everything was added just fine.
-Using the media player instead of the cuteradio player doesn't work. I get a connection error every time. Same stations play fine when using cuteradio player.

Thanks for your continued support!

Updated to v 0.2.0 on my N9 today........and nothing worked anymore.
all favourite stations were gone.

Couldn't browse stations by genre, country or languages anymore, always got empty screen.
recently played stations were not shown.

then updated to 0.2.1 and I am totally confused,
options for genre, country and lang are gone, no favorites?

when I search station by country in tuneIn I get letters from A-Z, when you don't know the exact station name you're lost.
how to save stations?

re-installed v0.1.2 again, works fine

@marxian
I'm testing your new version 0.2.1 and things are going better.
Browse categories and tunein search seem to be more clear.

To speed up searches, i would suggest you to cache locally in a separated folder, for example .logos_cache, all station's png since every png has the same id of tunein radio stations and it's unique.
Then, maybe add an option to enable/disable the alphabetic selection inside every category. (now is really boring..)

Artist and album info now always report "unknow" (maybe that in 0.1.0 it was working? - not sure)

I have found an interesting page about tunein api:
http://dementsov.com/2011/07/08/analysis-of-tunein-radio-stations/

In this page there are also a pair of json file with a collection of radio stations extracted from there.

ONE IMPORTANT request:
Using:

curl http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s124197&filter=l1

you can extract original radio's url. Could you store also this into the db as secondary url when saving a station?

When/if the domain radiotime.com and tunein will become unavailable, 404 or what else, we will be able to swap primary and secondary url without lose our preferred stations!

Testing goes on, now i'm using cuteradio every morning! ;)

I don't see any need to cache data. The local database is there to store stations that you use regularly, thus reducing the need to search online. Also, as soon as you cache data locally, you have two problems instead of one. How often have you read the advice 'just delete the cache, and it will work again'?

Then, maybe add an option to enable/disable the alphabetic selection inside every category. (now is really boring..)

It's not really feasible to do this, due to how the browsing works in the API. I agree that it sucks, but that's how it is.

Artist and album info now always report "unknow" (maybe that in 0.1.0 it was working? - not sure)

I did switch from Phonon to QMediaPlayer, so that is probably the cause. I thought metadata was working correctly after manually setting the Icy-MetaData request header.

I came across that page when looking at TuneIn myself. I don't really want to be doing any heavy processing of data. I'd rather keep it simple and ensure that the data retreived is up to date. That is, after all, the purpose of having TuneIn integration.

I will change the input validators when I work on the next update. :)

First, congratulations on the program.

My problem is different, I can later add manually, but LOGO radio is not showing up.

I tried with the image file in two formats: JPG and PNG

I copied them to the folder:
/home/user/cuteRadio/.logos/teste.png

within the application and the way I tell it this way:
File:///homehome/user/cuteRadio/.logos/teste.png

But LOGO not appear. Where am I going wrong?

Thank you!

Simply enter a username and password and submit. An account will automatically be created if the username is not already taken. :)

Sorry about the late reply. :o

I'm not actually sure why it wasn't working (probably some problem with the logo downloader when using local files), but all data is now stored on a remote server in version 0.3.0.

Installation of the new version apparently blew out all my previously saved Favourites, & does not seem to retain anything in Recently Played Stations.

Damn... it's true. I can't execute it without getting that same error!
But on the qml-browser thread pirateman seems to be on the way to making a qt-components-hildon package compatible with thumb.

Marxian, I managed to solve the problem of images as logo. I ask your permission to publish here what procedure was used for solution.

Version in use 0.2.0 -> is perfect. But I preferred to go back to 0.1.2 to test the search for unknown radios.

With this problem with TuneIn searches station almost all OFF.

Congratulations to great app again. I can no longer leave my NOKIA N9-00 because of this app
