Where is my precious tablet... :(

BTW, if you've got a tablet to test against, can you tell if the camera hole dips low enough to show some of the screen when you have the cover on the front side of the tablet?

Maybe with a camera hole equipped with sliding door?

not milling out the camera hole sounds doable ;)

Maybe with a camera hole equipped with sliding door?

I was thinking more along the line of a curtain . . .

But seriously dirkvl, you making that yourself? Cool. Vocation or avocation? Because cool either way.

How can this hold our tablet?

Copernicus

How can this hold our tablet?

It will grip the rounded edges at the top and bottom of the tablet (top and bottom when you hold it in portrait orientation).

But yeah, as you can tell, that probably isn't the best configuration for a kickstand (at least in landscape orientation) -- the tablet would probably be able to slide out...

it hugs the tablet with lots of love <3 <3 <3

and also the velvet keeps it from scratching and sliding

Is there a price estimate at this time?

And is one without the camera hole going to be cheaper than one with a hole?

I think one without hole will be more expensive.

YES! Purple velvet or no velvet!!!

I think one without hole will be more expensive.

From a manufacturing perspective it should be easier to manufacture and require less work (ie: not having to drill a hole in the material), thus making it cheaper. However, Dirk might decide to be a shrewd businessman and place a price on privacy and price it higher as you suggest simply due to the demand.

Or . . . both versions could be priced the same, defying both of these logical arguments.

Just imho extra mm3 of carbon costs more than no carbon in this place ;)

From a manufacturing perspective it should be easier to manufacture and require less work (ie: not having to drill a hole in the material), thus making it cheaper.

From a manufacturing perspective: if everyone wants 10 custom options instead of everyone gets the same, that makes it more expensive. So if 1 person does not want a camera hole, I have to write special milling code for that single one, hope it does not go wrong and keep it separate. That is a lot of extra work and extra costs.

However, custom options can make a product very appealing -see TOHKBD- and can make a semi-mass-produced product feel more premium and personal.

So it is a trade-off on my side to select which thing I can or should make custom. Please as much people as possible, without causing an enormous amount of extra work to keep the price low.

Can I get one without camera hole and with purple velvet.
(Need some "Twin Peaks" feel to it!)

I'll look into it.

looked around a bit and having some fresh and funky colours on the inside of the casing seems cool. have yet to find some purple velvet that really pops, but should be out there somewhere.

from accessoiries thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1480655#post1480655):

I've got an ancient Casio calculator, and kind of like the hard cover that protects the front of it when closed. Here's a picture of one:

http://www.websolutioninfo.net/KK/casio/FX-570MS-2.jpg

I dunno if anybody makes covers like these for modern mobile devices...

used the casing a lot in reverse orientation -covering the screen- to use it as a screen protector in my bag. thanks for the good idea!

waiting on some confirmations from jolla's and having some talks with local composite experts, then maybe doing some campaign for this one.

Due to mold making and getting equipment I will have quite a high MOQ, so here goes:

Probably not going to buy it, but wanted to get it started so contributed a small amount. Good luck with the project!

One typo - "The surface are copies the surface area or the plastic sheet."

(sorry. I'm a horrible pedant. Good luck though - looks awesome, and I'd get one if I had a tablet coming.)

Question - the first perk says "gets one casing with shipping", but when I choose it, it adds 25 more euros for shipping anyway. ;) So the wording seems a little odd there...

EDIT: Ok, I see you've fixed the wording. :)

Looks good to me. :) For my own personal use-case, I don't spend very much time taking pictures with my mobile devices, but I do tend to have them playing audio of some sort fairly frequently. So I'd probably want to get one with just the speaker-holes. But first let me ask if you've tried playing audio when the speakers were covered (i.e., no speaker holes); does this material significantly mute the sound coming out? Thanks!

one bonus of no camera holes is it will reduce the number of idiots walking round museums/shows/concerts etc trying to take pictures with their tablet and getting in the way. iPad users I'm looking at you....

That is still only a partial slide out of the tablet away since the camera is on top and not far away from the case edge ;)
Also the volume rockers would be used a lot less if three finger swipe would actually work, so i will go for no cut outs at all.
Looks cleaner, collects less dust and gives 100% protection.
I can imagine a tool in my bag hitting exactly the camera cut out and crack the screen given my extended amount of luck regarding Murphys law

Coming up on 20% with the campaign. I assume most orders will come when people get the tablet, hence the 45 days.

Had talks with composite manufacturers beginning of the week, see if they can help out or speed things up!

Dirk, I like your optimism of less than 45 days until people get the tablet into their hands. It gives hope to those of us who have accepted the situation to be that when Jolla said May, they meant May 2016 and everything else was a typo.

There's a velvet lining:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/carbonfiber-casing-for-the-jolla-tablet/x/9178986#/story

What you get

You will get a carbonfiber/epoxy casing with a nice satin finish. Rounded edges and soft velvet inner coating to prevent scratches.

I hope you (we) will try again when the tablet comes to us. There isn't many people who would buy protection before the stuff that needs protection.
