View Full Version : Nokia FW servers dead
I have noticed that ATM for a period of three days the Nokia servers holding the Firmware for N9 are no longer responding.
The nds2.fds-fire.nokia.com doesnt even hold a DNS record anymore.
root@kali:~# host nds2.fds-fire.nokia.com
Host nds2.fds-fire.nokia.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
I urge anyone to safe-keep their downloaded firmwares for N9, but, also suggest that we (Council task perhaps) collect available firmwares and keep them safe for download for TMO users.
I hope this is temporarily, but fear the worst!

This is an unfortunate development. You might be able to find some firmwares by searching (filtering) for them on archive.org:
https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://nds2.fds-fire.nokia.com/*
Perhaps the server is still alive and it's just DNS record that has gone. Does anyone happen have the last known IP address of this server?

Why OT? I wanted to contact them to ask if the firmware servers will go online again.
I'll wait for the official server status confirmation before uploading, but in the meantime I've found similar package torrent (https://archive.org/download/RM696/RM696_archive.torrent). this one is for the UK/Ireland
is it possible start a collection of the firmware and host them on maemo.org (or other) infrastructure, or would this stirr up legal trouble?

Here?
We don't even keep firmware here...
"Other" as you suggest would be best I'd imagine.
There are a few places safe for it's storage / etc...
Maemo = or < 5 may be fine.... may be excused.. even ....
overlooked ...by "the Powers That Watch"
but higher?
I don't know...
I'd consider that "other" place / places

Fantastic news! Let's hope they've gone for HTTPS this time. I always found it unnerving when downloading something as critical as firmware from the old server.
I think it would be a good idea to create a list on the wiki of all firmware images and their MD5/SHA checksums in case Microsoft ever decide they want to kill this service. This wiki page should probably be locked to the council for editing to prevent sabotage from untrusted sources. Maybe the council could also download a copy of all of the images too for contingency. I know that there could be issues with the legality of redistribution but that can easily be resolved by anonymous upload. ;)

Thank you, that was one of my intentions...
The page should be separated into Models and Variants
which I failed to state in my previous post.
My suggestion:
https://wiki.maemo.org/Firmware
But: As this collection of links might also be capable of stirring up legal problems, I'd like the council to comment on this Idea.
However a list of Filenames and hashes would be a start. Some "collectors" will do the rest, I guess.

Hello,
So, it's my first post at TMO:) I was active reader in this forum:)
I decided to collect as much as i can firmware versions of n9. Make mirrors of repositories, collect useful info.
http://markom.lt/n9/firmwares/
there is all firmware's i found yesterday. (sorry if i stole somebody firmwares, but i wanted to keep them in one place).
If somebody would explain how to read strange firmware names i think i could catalogue them i folders:) (version, region, 64gb or 16gb etc.)
And if you have firmware versions, that i don't have, and want to share with me, feel free to contact me:) I will happily store them in my mini server.
Sorry for my English, and for bad post, i don't post many posts in forums.

btw, anyone here who can easily deal with baidu uploader? I wanted to add 'legacy 418 (https://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid=467607&uk=2584400099&fid=3477147261)' to my collection, but failed epically.

Your firmware is with legacy number 427 from here (https://markom.lt/n9/firmwares/).
There came up the update for Nokia Software Recovery Tool (NSRT).
Unfortunately, the application identifies my N9 64GB 059J1V8 properly but is not able to download the firmware for it (probably because it is designed for Symbian devices).
The Internet connection is necessary for the application to install and work.
There is a note about being the firmware images available on the Microsoft's servers. So, there is still hope that the firmwares for N9(xx) still exist somewhere on their servers.

Quick question can i flash 005 - Asia/Pacific (incl. Australia/New Zealand, excl. China) firmware on my vietnam version?
Your product code is 059N151, so according to this variant table (https://silma.tk/fws/N9-variant-table-PR13.txt) your firmware is 'legacy 454'. If you try to flash legacy 005 you will simply get 'Downgrade disallowed' error.
In a nutshell, you need at least one file to flash your N9, and in your case this file is called DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.454.6_PR_LEGACY_454_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin. It is the firmware image itself. However, if you also want to clear the 'user partition' and to get the default applications and ringtones/wallpapers, you should also flash DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.454.5_EMMC_454.bin. This is the so-called 'content file'. So, roughly speaking, flashing not your phone's 'native' content file will only give you applications for another region. Usually it does not cause any troubles.
You can get more info in this thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82693).

No prob, you are welcome)
Frankly speaking, I do not get what you mean by 'region file'.
You can flash variant 468, but notice, that you will be unable to roll back to 454 after it. However, speaking about 'content files', you can flash any of them in any time (content files usually have EMMC in their names).
If I were you, I would definitely check out the first message of those thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82693) ;)

Not being facetious here but trying to save you time. If you applied any EMMC.bin with map data it would already be out of date. You would need to update to 0.2.54.223 (last map data from 2015) which can either be downloaded using WLAN via Maps application or by using Nokia Suite upon PC (not compatible with Windows 10 for a while but now resolved). see my post in this thread:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mobiledevices/forum/mdnokian-mdnokiann/nokia-n8-download-nokia-maps-on-windows-10-nokia/1329bdb3-9966-41eb-9d07-83689d3548ea
Although it refers to N8 have just tried it with N9 prior to posting. You only need flash EMMC if want wallpapers & media that originally came with device.

Hey guys
My (free) domain silma.tk was cancelled by freenom without a reason. Looking into it right now.
To me it seems that the first link (archive.org) in the first post has the "best" firmware for N9.
It also comes with a .torrent file, I suggest people to download & seed that.
But in any case I can host stuff on my website.
How can I put together a curated selection?

Frankly...
Having done a great deal of preservation for the n8x0s...
The best thing you and everyone else can do...
Is to simply download and put into storage all the necessities from archive.org (and any other pertinent files from any other sources that are reputable and vetted...that is)
As precautionary ..just in case the files in archive.org become inaccessible due to any number of possible reasons...
THEN...it makes sense to host them.
Until that circumstance happens ..it is a waste of time, and hosting space...when it is commonly available.
Better to spend the time packing your personal storage vault with everything you can ...in the eventuality of its need.

Hi N9 fans,
I was clearing out my desk and I found my old beloved N9. Yeah, I started messing with it again...
Unfortunately, whilst just installing a simple app from a repo the phone froze and now it wont boot anymore.
So my ask is what would be the best recipe for getting me back to a clean Harmattan 1.2 the way it was.... Please, pretty please...
I'm on mac, no windoze here.
Hoping that some kind soul will help me navigate the sea of possibilities here.
Ciao

All essential tools, firmwares and instruction thread are linked.
All firmware are PR1.3, the latest.
But now you have the chance to flash Variant001.

Hmm. I'm not particularly experienced in flashing phones but I flashed my N9 with the last (Variant 001) of Harmattan and the process completed successfully. I did a 'flasher -R' which also completed successfully. When I now turn on the phone I get a full page of text on how I've broken the warranty etc etc but then nothing else happens.

This sounds a bit like MALF state? Do a search for N9 MALF and you will find the solution here in this forum.
It would help also to be a bit more verbous...

Did you originally flash both main.bin and emmc.bin to reset partition structure? Have a look at "rainisto" post in this thread:

Yes, flashing emmc.bin would have also been my next advice.
But I am afraid the device memory is dead.
There have been too many occurences like this. :(
Possible reasons- .bin image crc checksum broken- bad usb cable- bad partition table that you havent reseted back to normal- broken mmc hw
download broken - unlikely, but possible
bad usb cable - would be the easiest to check/change
bad partition table - very unlikely if you did not tinker with layout (as I did ;))
broken mmc - unfortunately likely as happened often and HW is old
Also it matches that your device did just shut down.
Sorry :(
Nevertheless try again with both firmware.bin and emmc.bin.
Maybe --erase-user-data and I do not remember by heart but something like --reset-partition-table (have a look with --help before).

Thanks for chiming in - appreciate it. I would dearly love to save the poor soul...
My noob question would be, where do I find emmc.bin ?

Doesn't flasher just lay out the bits on the phone?! Seems that it's expecting some kind of file structure to be in place.

Unfortunately mmc: Could not exec '/sbin/dosfslabel /tmp/sudmmcpb94m2/internal0p1 "Nokia N9 is usually indicative of emmc image being corrupted.
Do you have the seven character alphanumeric product code underneath SIM tray available as may be able to point towards another?

Strange.
I bought few :) n9s from aliexpress for less than 50 euros a piece. Work good and look like new. Anyhow, they were 003 versions, i flashed 009 over them and right after that cmt from 003 to get modem back to a working order. Nice!

Lucky you!
I've tried several combinations, but I can't unbrick my N9. Maybe the underlying hardware just failed.

One of then should work, depending of your variant (001, 003, 005, 006) guessing yours is higher than variant 001 as that didnt work.
It IS possible to downgrade. By replacing the certs, as the device does have a history of previously versions. But, success depends on whats on the ‘cache’ (simple said), and replacing those certs is not that easy. I did it once , but honestly, cant remember the complete steps. The tools needed and a rough deskription is in another thread somewhere on downgrading.
So, try different variants first. Just not China ones

Ah yes. True, i guessed there were a reason why it left my mind. Well, sadly that leaves downgrading near impossible (unless you want to take the device apart, and hook up the flashchip to a programmer)

Hi guys,
I am considering buying a Nokia N9 phone.
I asked the seller to send me the firmware version,
but I am not sure about the result. :-)
What I am trying to determine that if this is Chinese firmware or not as I would not want to buy a phone with that.
Could you please help me to determine which region is the firmware from? I think it is not Chinese and it is a branded firmware.
Also is this the latest version available?
That's all I know for now.
The firmware version is: V40.2012.21-3.339.2_PR_339
Thanks a lot for the help!

Actually, this phone is not mine: yet.
The photo is from eBay, I kindly asked the seller to take a photo of the software version screen. (In the end, I have bought it before your response, I was not able to resist.)
But I will do charge it once it arrives. :-)
Thanks for your response!
(I am really happy that it has European firmware and it is the last available version.)

Hi aspergerguy,
I am reading in the forum that if I want to use the repomirror package, I might need to reflash my device.
You mentioned the file DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.339.2_PR_LEGACY_339_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin
May I use this link from this thread's first post if I really need to reflash my device? (The last firmware link called, "A0E9827F_DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.339.2_PR_LEGACY_339_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin
D6C9C818_DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3.339.1_EMMC_339.bin")
https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ars13Tv5L15qjddx76WEm7jvkeeqiQ
Or is it may be possible to dump the current firmware from the phone itself?
Sorry for the noob question, but I am really anxious not to screw up the phone by flashing something inappropriate.
Thanks a lot,
Tamas

[QUOTE=tvandorffy;1571719]I am reading in the forum that if I want to use the repomirror package, I might need to reflash my device./QUOTE]
Remember that you would need to send N9 Repomirror to device by Bluetooth from another device as N9 browser certificates now expired and in Settings > Applications > Installations > Allow installations from non-Store sources:
https://openrepos.net/content/ancelad/n9-repomirror
Try first without re-flashing firmware.

Hi aspergerguy,
Thank you, I will do that first.
I would want to avoid flashing if possible as the device already has the latest version. (I did flash several of my devices, android phones, my Nokia N8 in the past, so I think I probably would be able to do this as well. But I need to know for sure which flash file that I can download is good for my device.)
Kind regards,
Tamas

Finally, my phone arrived yesterday and it's a beauty! :-)
Unfortunately, the N9 Repomirror installation did not work. (I have tried both versions.)
Then, in the end, I decided to flash my phone with the 339 firmware variant available in the first post. (With the windows flasher with windows 10) And luckily, everything went well!
Repomirror installed, development mode enabled! :-)
But I have another question:
I want to flash the open mode "fix" (Image_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix) because I want to install ubiboot and Maemo Leste later.
So do I need to re-flash my phone again with firmware and emmc right before doing it, like this?:
flasher -f -F firmware.bin -F emmc.bin -R ; flasher -a firmware.bin -k zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix --flash-only=kernel -f -R
-or -
Can I just flash the open mode kernel anytime I want to, like this:
flasher -a firmware.bin -k zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix --flash-only=kernel -f -R
I would not want to reflash everything again if it is not necessary...
Thanks!!

It's been a while, but I think this article (https://dt.iki.fi/nokia-n9-alternative-os) deals with this issue.
Back then the N9 version of Leste was not receiving as much attention as N900 & Droid 4 & Pinephone versions - has this changed since?

Yes, this is the exact article that I am looking at right now and according to this, it should be done in one sweep. (and lose all installed stuff)
But oh well, if it is safer this way, so be it! :-)
>Back then the N9 version of Leste was not receiving as much attention
Yes, you are probably right, I do not have much info, but for example, the archive date of the N9 version is March 2019 and the N900 version is quite fresh, 2021 may... But both archive has the same version of 1.0.
So I do not know.
I am thinking of posting a comment about this.
At least to ask about the situation. The article writer posted that this version did not seem very usable to him. But as far as I know, this is the only alternate os project that is active at the moment.
(And I hear they received additional funds from the EU which is very good...)

SOLUTION:
I just found a big big post: Re-commissioning N9 in 2018
Following its step, I finally installed the N9QTweak package and installed the aegis-dpkg command. With that I was able to install my the bejeweled2 deb file.
I am still not 100% about openmode, but installation log said that it was succesful, so let's hope it was.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have flashed the openmode kernel, but aegis is still active
Here is what I did:
1. Get rid of the warning:
$ disclaimer-cal remove View-openmode
disclaimer-cal: Disclaimer removed from CAL (truncated to zero size)
The flashed my phone like this: (using windows 7)
flasher -f -F main.bin -F emmc.bin -R && flasher -a main.bin -k zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix --flash-only=kernel -f -R
The result of that:

I also installed n9repomirror and enabled developer mode successfully.
Then I tried to install bejeweled2-full_0.0.60_armel.deb from a game repository and this happened:
/home/user/MyDocs # dpkg -i bejeweled2-full_0.0.60_armel.deb
x509_sigverify: Certificate failure reason: certificate has expired
x509_sigverify: Certificate verification failed
Aegis rejecting bejeweled2-full_0.0.60_armel.deb: package 'ea-mobile-bejeweled2-full' origin cannot be determined -- signature check failed
aegis aborting dpkg -- all listed package files rejected
Compilation failed in require.
So I do not understand what went wrong!
I thought the openmode kernel disables the aegis security system on the phone.
Is there any other way to check if the openmode kernel is active?
It does not seem to work. :-(

Did you try?
aegis-dpkg -i bejeweled2-full_0.0.60_armel.deb
Did you try?
aegis-dpkg -i bejeweled2-full_0.0.60_armel.deb
Or, set the date back, to a date where the certificate is not expired. Probably like june 2012 will work

Yes, thank you, after installing aegis-dpkg I was able to install!
Oh yeah, but aegis-dpkg should nkt be needed at all on a device with open kernel!
I guess it is really only a cert ossue and setting date should do the trick.
Please give us the output of
uname -a
to check if kernel is really the open one.
There is another trick necessary when replacing original system packages:
AEGIS_FIXED_ORIGIN=com.nokia.maemo dpkg ...
BUT do this only when you know what you do! :D

Hi,
This is the output of uname -a:
(I flashed the: zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix kernel image)
~ $ uname -a
Linux RM696 2.6.32.54-dfl61-20121301 #1 PREEMPT Sat Mar 2 23:11:21 EET 2013 armv7l GNU/Linux
Since then I installed N9Tweaks, repartitioned and installed ubiboot configured with harmattan and maemo leste and everything works okay. (Well except for maemo leste: but at least it boots up but not really usable.)
So this should be an open kernel. :-) But I cannot determine from the text alone. There is no "open" word in it. :-) :-)
>AEGIS_FIXED_ORIGIN=com.nokia.maemo dpkg ...
>BUT do this only when you know what you do!
I certainly do not know about this. But I will try to look it up.
