No need to be so nasty whenever "iPhone" is mentioned.
Nokia has a lot to learn from "iPhone" and Apple if they want to continue to be a leader.
Also, N900 isn't Nokia's 1st gen phone imo.

The default for modest is IMAP, the default for Gmail is POP. You either need to switch Gmail to IMAP or use the POP settings in Modest.

Don't Choose Service Provider just press next...

You can get this by adding Qole's fremantle repository (http://qole.org/) to your N900 via the App Manager.
Just bear in mind that you take full responsibility if something on that repo breaks...

happened to me when i got mine....nokia care could not fix it and they asked me to get a replacement....got mine the same day (thankfully the stock was there!).....getting a replacement is better...
