Definitely a light sensor, if its dark it'll dim the backlight slightly (its not very noticeable because it fades between different levels of light very slowly)
Or inversely if its really bright...

Out of my experience with these cases I'd be more afraid of the belt clasp to come loose of the case then the phone coming out of the case.
Decide on whether or not you are going to use a belt...
