Idea totally not scrapped. Bugs (like the silent profile bug) still take priority over pretty much everything else unless something in the dev process dictates otherwise. We'll get there. Promise.

That's a bit out of date. You can see here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sysfs) for /sys. The others aren't standard though.

/sys has been there since day one. It's a virtual filesystem providing hooks directly into kernel/module parameters.
I'm pretty sure /syspart has been there all along, though I don't know what...

This one works with any theme that's currently active (including Plastic). So it won't make any difference which one to use, but it's recommended to use Plastic Setup if you're using Plastic theme.
