Re: The End is Coming: What do we do next?

I'm treating my old N900 like a newborn baby. Gentle, gentle. :)

For all its faults, N900 still has no competition in my eyes.

Unhappy The End is Coming: What do we do next?

Here's my opinion about the future of Maemo and maemo.org. I am currently an (un-elected, volunteer) maemo community council member, and an avid member of this community for about 4 years.

Re: NOKIA Rejected Android in Favor of M$ - Eric Schmidt

Hmmm. Interesting take. This is why I have, for years, been able to take a machine that no longer had the specs for the current incarnation of Windows, throw a modern Linux on it and get years more...

Re: NOKIA Rejected Android in Favor of M$ - Eric Schmidt

Wow, you just named Internet Explorer as one of Microsoft's best products....

While you are correct in saying that their best products were acquired from someone else, I'd have to say the product...

Re: NOKIA Rejected Android in Favor of M$ - Eric Schmidt

Untrue. Many of the various Linux distributions could be considered bloatware, but the Linux kernel itself is remarkably trim, even comparing against many of the microkernel competitors that have...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

It would be an epic fail if Intel managed to get MeeGo in a smartphone and it made more profit then winmo7 phones. :D
Just wishful thinking...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

They didn't do it for altruistic reasons:

They were being sued by Apple and it was part of the settlement.
Plus they were being investigated by the DoJ and by keeping Apple alive they could...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

This is completely off-topic, but the theoretical upper limit of speed for JIT execution is faster than static native code, including ASM, due to context-dependent continuous optimisation.

We're...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Maemo/Meego is so mature that it has been deployed on how many generations, iterations, and models of phones? And not from a company that focuses on a single product line, but from a company that...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

You can't be further from the truth. Maemo is in almost every way different than Android, they are similar only by the name of their kernel, and even then Google stripped out a lot of the one going...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Only via a proprietary solution.

Maemo/MeeGo derives its systems from a far more diverse open source base than Android, which is almost entirely internal to Google. They are very different...

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

A quick correction, from a person who has used and enjoyed Apple products for years (since the Apple ][+): Steve Jobs is in no way a technological visionary. Nothing that Jobs has ever done in the...

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

There was a plausible alternative offered, that was the old strategy. Are you familiar with it? Even if you are, I'll just have to disagree with you.

This will not speed up anything. They probably...

No its not the end of it. The problems will continue... The one who scares me most is what will happen to Qt :-(

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

You're probably right. But this also means that Elop is a weak leader.

Steve Jobs did not sell off Apple. He re-innovated.

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

MeeGo was going to be late, regardless. Folks are too unwilling to admit that.

So instead, spread anger about WP7 - which, is easier to do since it's not full-featured as of yet nor is it a...

Refuting your love letter to WP7 would be, as Crashdamage said, clearly pointless, but can you at least answer this one: why would you have to use a specific, proprietary software just to transfer a...

Don't have an Xbox, don't want an Xbox. Not everyone is a gamer. And not all gamers use Xbox.

Don't have a Zune, don't want a Zune. Better DRM-free services are available elsewhere.

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Understood, but MeeGo is/was positioned as a mobile computing platform, which by any rational analysis should not be niche! Mobile computing is the future... not "smartphones".
