I found a way to search contacts in portrait mode
install xdotool (extras-devel, ususal warnings apply)
install shortcutd
open shortcutd settings, assign proximity sensor to custom shell command...

We don't have a second row but the bottom row of the menu can host icons.
We can put there any extras we need.
We just have to decide which icons go where :)
I hate to refuse features but...

don't go for hp, please... Lenovo seems to be of a good quality, I don't have it for a long time but it hasn't got any problems till now. If they still have ibm's quality they should be good.
