You can change the root password in xterm.
As root type
passwd <hit enter>
Now set the password to what you want.

OK here is the deal, pressing shift once, then pressing 2 will make an @ sign
pressing shift twice, will turn the 2 into an @ sign, but if you press the @ sign it...
