Please install Testdisk&Photorec from the package recovery-tools, then run testdisk, choose the external card andlet it try its magic.
This might be sufficient before trying more harsh methods like...

Try testdisk to recover the files, it has both a kind of undelete for files and folders. Did you try to check and repair the file system from within the N900. You need rootsh from extras repo...
