To revert to the original white background which seems to work the best, make the background option under the Palette settings = #c8c8c8

This does mean the text will be hard/impossible to read on black backgrounds though, hence the limitation of this mod :(

You could always try having foreground set to #c8c8c8 or a slightly darker grey which would be readable on both the black and white background, or just use a colour, such as:

Lime green - #7cf804
Blue - #047bf7
Red - #d1001a
