N900 Case / Pouch / Screen Protector Thread

I know only dev versions of the device are out but from what i see in the specs this time around we do not get a pouch...

So I'm starting this thread to see where people spot the various boxwave / invisibleshield / ... screen protectors.

Also, considering this is costing a lot, a good case would be an interesting thing to find / add to your pocket mix (One that doesn't hamper phone use this time around).

I wonder how a full body case would work with slide out keyboards..I would have to get one considering how scratched my n800's body is after accidentally drops.

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

Can't say for sure as I've not found any cases, skins or covers specifically for the N900 yet, but the rubberized hard cases I saw for the N97 come in two pieces. I know the N900 is slide vs tilt and slide however, I'd imagine the same sort of thing will become available for the N900.

One piece goes around the edge of the screen with holes for buttons, ports, etc. The other covers the back and sides of the keyboard with holes for camera, ports, etc.

Google or ebay for "n97 rubberized hard case" for pictures.

I hope there's a case and screen protectors for the N900 soon. I'd like to pre-order them to arrive with the phone as I'm guaranteed to drop or scratch it if I don't have them!

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

I hope for a PDAir or Proporta book-style case, which fully allows the extraction of the slide-out keyboard. My 810 stays in the PDAir case and I am fully content of it.

Meh, I don't like the look of the Nokia pouches. I want something more like the one debernardis pointed to. Or something like what jow is talking about, protecting but not interfering.

You just know this thing is going to be sliding out of your shirt pocket or slipping off the table or whatever. You need to protect the precious baby.

A little pouch isn't going to do that.

pycage 2009-09-20 08:32

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

The pouch that comes with the G1 should fit well. G1 and N900 are almost the same size with the G1 being a little bit longer.

oh definitely, i agree. i was just responding to ucomm. I actually like the 'artist series' idea for cases that Jon Rubinstein, Palm CEO, showed off for the Palm Pixi on the Engadget Show or something developed by Incase.

I'm with R-R. I want something for my pocket. So as little bulk as possible but full-body so it protects when it drops out of said pocket. So I hadn't thought to look for pouches or wallets, etc.

Anyway, will post a link as soon as I spot anything.

I've had good luck with them in the past (bought my n800 leather case from them), but I don't know if I can really be sure if the protector is going to be on spec if the device isn't even out yet.

I notice that the prototype preview at http://my-symbian.com/other/preview_n900.php says:
Quote:

The only thing that worries me when it comes to N900 display is its resistence to scratches and other damages. And it seems to be quite poor. I got the device without any protective case and the display got some awful scratches in just one day, and that's only because some sand grains got into the pocket I kept it in. So a good screen protector or soft carrying case seem to be a must.

Not yet available nor an image, but I'll be curious to see the final design from here: http://www.noreveusa.com/product/Nok...ther_case.html

I was aching for a black version of this case back in the day for my 770 (hand made in Spain mind you) http://www.pielframa.com/nokia_770.htm I'm sure if they made an N900 case it would be attractive.

I really hope Proporta makes one for the N900. I missed getting one for my N800. :(

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

The N900 manual says to not cover the left-hand side of the front, i.e. when the earpiece, camera, light sensor, proximity sensor and notification light are. I wonder why this is? It seems a shame as a screen protector which didn't cover that part would have a noticeable edge and not look (or feel) very good. :(

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

I've currently got a wallet type case for my N95 which allows me to carry just one thing around with me (well wallet plus keys!) so I'd like a similar case for the N900 when it arrives. Ideally with 2 or 3 credit card slots, but to be as slim as possible (not bothered about belt clips etc.)

Something like this (as iPhone isn't so different in size)

The left hand side contains the proximity sensor, which when covered will disable the touch screen (ie. when answering/making a call) yet this is exactly what you want to happen when placing the N900 into a pouch/wallet/whatever.

I think the manual really means not to cover the left hand side while using the touch screen - hopefully this won't be too tricky when holding it in the left hand as my left thumb always covered the light sensor on the N810!

pelago 2009-10-05 10:27

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

I'm also a bit worried about covering the sensor with my hand while holding it. I already cover the light sensor on the N810 often, causing the display to dim. But the manual specifically says not to cover the left-hand side with any 'tape', so I guess they were thinking of screen protectors when they wrote that.

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

Is it more that screen protectors without the cutouts for these sensors will impede their function?

The manual shows the proximity sensor using the whole of the space to the left of the screen, so a cutout for the proximity sensor seems to be not possible.

I´d recommend Noreve for quality. I´ve had Noreve cases on three different Nokia models and they were all top quality and fit well. For those living on the eastern side of the Atlantic, I pity you for the shipping services Noreve uses there. Chronopost / The French Postal Service is neither fast nor really reliable.

If you´re here in the USA then the cases come pretty quickly and are shipped from somewhere in CA.

there's only one turnoff: rubber band.

gives me creeps.

nice leather and all and then... rubber band and plastic knob

(and judging by product pictures, the band and knob will be seen far away)

Well, here's the first N900 case I've seen:

"for Nokia N900 N 900 * Crystal Plastic Cover Hard Case"

http://cgi.ebay.com/for-Nokia-N900-N...item45ee9188a8

Not really what I'm after... Might fall into "you get what you pay for" category. But I might get one to check out given how cheap it is.

However the sad empty shell might make me pine for the N900 even more. Arrgh!

I think the mechanism is nice, but it's preferable to be executed in leather to maintain a consistent look ;) The excess ties should be handled better too..

Personally, I'm going to wrap my device in a invisible shield\bodyguardz type material and just pocket it 'nude' to maintain the slimmest possible size.

I'd probably buy a belt holster or a sleeveless clip too because I use them occasionally, but not everyday..

Leather cases (like Vaja) adds way too much bulk in my experience, even when you never put it in your pocket and they spoil way too quick for my taste (even Vaja.. bought a few of those in the past).

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

I agree with the above post. If i understand it correct.

I am going for a screen protector only.
Thing is, which one is best for the job?

No dust, no fog, still good responsiveness, durability, scratchfree, no glare, holes for the cam + prox. sensor.

Just if this hasnt been mentioned yet:
There is a topic specifically for screen protectors right here to add some already discussed information to this topic.

Most screen-only protectors have no problem with the above, cept for 'glare' issue you need to get the matte finish at a slight loss of clarity.
(Forward) cam, proximity and light sensor needs no special holes cause they'll work just fine with yet another layer of transparent protector over them.

I just hope the top of N900's face plate is completely flat, so's to make application easier and better durability for the sticker.

As for the rest of the device, I'll apply invisible shield\bodyguardz-type (die-cut 3M sheets) to protect them from scratches. With them on, I can even pocket the device along with my house keys..

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

I think some sort of screen protector is a must simply because the screen is totally a smudge magnet. First I made fun of my friend's iPhone for being such a smudgy pocket mirror, but now I'm faced with a similarly smudgy screen. Terrible. :)
And it's hard to get completely clean again, even using microfibre. The dirt just smudges around.

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

The problem I have, why I never use screen protectors, is I always seem to get dust under the damn thing. I really wish they would just factory install something like the invisible shield.

Knowing that the aftermarket cases won't come for awhile, I decided to buy this as a temporary solution until a proper fitted case is available:

http://www.amazon.com/Caselogic-Medi...5176291&sr=8-3

It's cheap, and according to the internal dimensions cited in the description, the n900 should fit.

Re: N900 Case / Pouch / Screen protector

For those who owned a sony ericsson P1i before, I think the original P1i pouch will fit the N900, it's almost the same dimensions, except the N900 being a little taller
