Browsing in 20's

It seems that web is different in this decade than ten years ago. Many pages doesn't load at all with our old mobile browsers on Maemo/Meego/Sailfish. Reason is sometimes that page makers even not test pages with Lynx anymore and that broke original idea of html.

We don't have to use those pages that are not compatible for our browser. We can go to another pages. But some times is good to know why those pages doesn't work or how to make them work. So let chatting about browsers and pages!

I found one page what tell good information about your Browser:

Re: Browsing in 20's

Iceweasel is still the only one which opens the most pages for me. Netsurf being fastest. Opera with ssl1.2 the workhorse for main browsing. Micro-b for TMO. I tried Fennec 16/17 for NOT thumb cssu which is found online but didn't work too well. Or was it that did not find a way to update ssl to 1.2.

I have to admit that I use google search. Have tried for some time duckduckgo and yandex and yahoo etc. but I can't find the same stuff as with google. Maybe I should change and learn to use the search options better.

How to change default search engine of Micro-B or Opera?

I've noticed that on youtube as well, since youtube is owned by google (gootube?).

Are you using llectronics' webkit? I think I noticed the change about the time I made the switch, but I haven't reverted yet to find out. I guess I got to sooner or later so I can upgrade to the newest Sailfish X (SFOX? Sailfox?).

Or it could just be coincidence. Either way, it's a PITA that the fullscreen button is now smaller while my fingers remain the same size.

MicroB: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=88518&page=2

Opera: sorry, no idea. Last time I used on a PC was about 20 years ago. On a mobile, never.

I think startpage.com just scrapes and forwards Google results. I am not sure how well it works for non-English searches.

I have used that one too. And am paying for startmail. Have been satisfied with the mail.

startpage.com is good also with non-English, but what maemo browser works with that?

I am quite happy using a combination of StartPage and Qwant

Strange, haven't been using Google for years.
Feels as weird to use Google (on somebody else's config) as back in the days starting DuckDuckGo.
Don't forget to throw some searches in QWANT.COM --> can you believe it: the European Search Engine exists - who will purchase / absorb it if not already done ... place your bets..

Browsing outside of Firefox / Fennec I find pretty tyresome due to lack of plug ins and reading modes etc...
The only other mobile browser I really enjoyed was MicroB.
Pity Jolla still has to waste time in keeping their own Sailfish Browser dragging along.

Which Fennec you are using and with what plugings? Do you have TLS1.2 with Fennec? I haven't found a way to update certs.

Qwant works with Fennec on N900. But even lite.qwant.com doesn't work with Micro-B or Opera with N900.

Hint for desktop Opera users, you can set up easily Qwant to searchengine shortcut:
Name: Qwant
Keyword: q
Address: https://www.qwant.com/?q=%s&t=web

then only type on adress bar:
q [your word(s)]

This is my last hope for sites if nothing else opens them. Have used it also for whatsappweb and instagram. Not for faint hearted or with hurry.

Likewise. I used Bing briefly, reasoning that Microsoft at least does not pretend to be a friendly upstart (and that their business model does not involve milking and selling your personal data), with no negative consequences (such as missed search results etc).

Then I discovered DDG and never looked back.

Re: Browsing in 20's

Dillo
Dooble
Hell...anything no matter how antiquated is better than being herded into the chromium/google corral ..

(It isn't that I don't "like" google / chromium..
I use it only when it is a "have no choice for a specific usecase"... Because I just don't like being herded to an inevitable "only 1 game in town option")

Maemish 2020-01-27 18:42

Re: Browsing in 20's

If you help me to update certs to Dooble and make it work I will suely change to that. It is just that this chromium 57 can do things I am not et been able to do with anything else.

endsormeans 2020-01-28 00:28

Re: Browsing in 20's

That is the point Maemish.
updating the certs for Dooble will not help make it competitive against chromium ...at the fundamental level.
There needs to be a competitive browser that can go toe to toe with chromium / google... and do all that it can ...so that folks have a privacy and security based option instead.
This is an ever increasing and alarming issue that goes beyond our n900's
