How timely. I was just talking with my 10yo daughter on the topic of relative merits and difficulty of making versus selling stuff.

At this point, should I cry or laugh....

That's unfortunate news if it turnout to be complete true. Sony was/is the high profile maker using sailfish at the moment (right?).

Not quite. They make the hardware and they make it open enough for others to port their OS to it. That does not mean they "use" Sailfish, in the same way that replacing Windows on a Lenovo laptop with Linux does not mean Lenovo "uses" Linux.

Re: Sony is shifting direction.

Well ...
it ain't a case of "if" it is true...
The CEO stated it.
They "are" changing their direction.
and he states the why of it ..
And it makes complete sense...

The company like many other high profile and successful companies ...
has made their big financial successes from being at the forefront of innovation...
Not from struggling to grab a piece of the pie.
But from creating a pie and owning virtually the whole damn pie and getting the majority of the profits from it ...
at least until the rest of the herd catch up and figure out how to undercut, or offer competitive, or even more the innovative function to the "new" thing made by the initial innovator...

This recent announcement is no different than BB deciding to get out of the OS business and just make devices...
Nor any different to M$ getting out of the OS business...
Nor Nokia getting out..

This is just symptomatic of the disruptive phase of the evolution timeline of the devices and OS's ...
It is inevitable..

The proliferation and flooding of the markets with more and more cheaply made alternatives ...
mean that the initial leaders of the pack are sanely bowing out before it becomes a monstrous financial loss trying to compete with ever increasing costs, diminishing returns and inevitable losses...
...to pursue other more potentially lucrative avenues that will give them a return on the investment to pay off all the cost for R+D, study, design, wages, marketing, revamping assembly and production ..etc...that they invest in...

The immediate loss will be most keenly felt by those who need known long-held to be reliable...stable devices for their particular needs ...
for example ....as posted ...those who relied on Sony devices for Sailfish.

This isn't a rare example occurring ...
This is a norm that will be seen by virtually all the big names...

Expect Samsung, LG, and all the other big boys... to bow out as well over the next 10 years...

Expect there to be instability in the realm of smartphones for sure...
and it won't end.
Not with the departure of the big corps and their stable lines of devices gone...

Such "shifts in direction" by the forefront of established and stable industry ... doesn't make it easier for alternative OS's or communities to properly function..

Re: Sony is shifting direction.

Yup, some good points. But I never said that they shipped it. But it's more than just a hacked on port since they had some official type of announcements. Perhaps I'm thinking of Jolla doing that, but it's more official than say Motorola for example, but about the same as fairphone.

Sony admits that it hasn’t moved fast enough in mobile (xperiablog)

Move to services and content business might be viable economically as bean counters just love the idea of selling something that does not diminish when sold, being able to sell the same old s**t over and over again the next day. Much better than selling a block of molecules arranged in a particular complex way which is *gone* from their hands the second it is sold! :D:D
I bet they wet their pants in expectation!!!

However generally for technological advancement of humankind this is a bad step... since we still need the hardware too.
When all manufacturing has transmogrified into churning out intangibles the civilization collapses...

(which eventually might turn out to be a good thing after all, hmm?)

Indeed. I have always found it at least an order of magnitude easier to make something than sell something. Might be different with salesmen though.

As long as they keep making Playstations and hi-end walkmans I'm happy.

Playstation network subscriptions are a very steady source of income for Sony, they still need a Playstation though.

Nope, that's not like the pennypinchers think. They love the income from PSN but see the hardware just as an expense. (which is actually true as I suppose they are probably making a loss on the HW)

The fact that there might be a link between the two requires understanding how the world works, and I believe it is a requirement nowdays for promotion to the highest echelons to leave useless things like common sense and compassion behind.

Re: Sony is shifting direction.

and there lies the issue...
the hardware...
since much gaming resides online nowadays...
they could probably design handheld controllers next that contain all that was in the the physical "box" and hence omit the need for a physical "box" ...thereby cutting some large amount of cost...
Charge more for the same service ...essentially...

God knows the future of gaming ...
what will be on the shelf in 20 years may be a "packet" with a pair of sleek glasses...and a small envelope filled with adhesive sensors to slap on key points of the body...
and nothing more...
yet the cost to consumers will continue to go up...
though the material cost to produce, package, ship and have shelf space for ...must always go down...

Yes, like all those companies firing the expensive engineers and keeping only the sales people because they are the ones bringing money.
