N900 Keyboard Frame: Broken, Loose, Has Gaps?

Hi there,

I started thinking about buying of N900 when I first saw its pictures a few monthes ago. IMHO it's the best smartphone on the market! But ... I heard from two N900 owners about problems with broken keyboard frame - http://im.ly/d1b78/. That fact decreased my willing to own N900. I really like it. I can live with short battery life or raw software. This is just a matter of time. But bad quality of device case/frame is a huge problem. N900 owners can you proof or disclaim that this problem exists with device.

TIA

Re: N900 keyboard frame quality

On mine, you can hear a clunky sound when pushing the frame on the center.
It could be better.

Re: N900 keyboard frame quality

No problem with frame quality on mine.

N900 tends to be very strong, don't remember the name but on youtube there is a serie of 5 extreme tests done to the N900 (water, dust, falls, damages with keys ...)

The only part not so resistant to scratches is the screen. Otherwise everything else is almost undestructible.

Is this bit loose on your N900?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,
Im my quest to stop my worrying "that i have a defective N900" ( I tend to always end up with the crap ones. )

Is this little bar slightly loose on your phone?
It slike it isnt glued down or naything, Just seems like a bar of plastic that runs from one side to the other and is slightly loose.

Attachment 6216

Seems liek everything else is quite strong, but it just seems a bit loose for my liking ( probably nothing ) just seems odd considering everything else is solid.

Thanks
G

Re: Is this bit loose on your N900?

You probably find it is just a bit of natural flex of the plastic.

My n900 is like this as well.

nothing loose here.
it's all plain and really smooth.

Pretty solid here.

mine flexes, but it isn't a problem. I didn't notice it until you mentioned it. I'd say it's just fine.

Yeah looks like some have it stuck down nice and solid and others dont.
My last N900 ( before it went back with a bad screen was solid )
This one has some loose bits.

Ah well.
Its got insurance, so i suppose if it breaks and falls apart ill get it sorted.

Re: Is this bit loose on your N900?

Same thing here.
also the display assembly moves sideways when the keyboard is closed. A bit annoying but my own fault since ive drop the phone a couple of times.

And as a tip to those who got a problem with squeky sounds when touching the screen - tighten the screws behind the device. Remove the battery cover and tighten the normal screws. leave the torx screws alone though. - find the proper tightness for the screws so that the squeking stops. Made my n900 feel even sturdier.

On my n900 it's loose and I can move it a little bit with my nail.

Re: Is this bit loose on your N900?

Looks like it s a natural thing on 90% of peoples phones then.
Just like
- Bad pixel
- Squeaky screen ( not so common i think )
- Screen not EXACTLY aligned with the base unit.
- Screen not nice and close to the base unit ( theres some give when pushing down )

Its a shame really.
Its a good phone ( ok, Pc with a phone ) but i think some of these "issues" ( some small some big ) ) really let it down slightly.

Take care. You may end breaking it.

Same "problem" here. But it looks good from the sides, so I think it's normal?

I've got the same here, a little bit loose. Not really visible but when I push it a little bit I hear and feel a click. Not a big problem if you ask me.

Gap between case?

Hi all maemo.org users. had my Nine for a few months now and i have begun to see a small gap appearing between the bottom of the keyboard and the edge of the chassis. the thin plastic bit that runs around the outside of the keyboard at the bottom is not firm or stuck in place. is this correct?

cheers all

Mine has always had it I think.... I noticed it when I saw it had bits of dirt in it :(

Pretty silly design really.

Pretty silly just to accept the mistake. I got one of the very first devices and had the same problem. A few days ago I talked to nokia care center (de) and explained. They were willing to grant me a retour although the 30-days deadline was over.

Right now I'am waiting for the new device and need to use my old phone instead and it feels like crap beeing disabled in so many ways...

Hi, did you see the space between the line and the "C"? The thin line on my N900 is going off the Keyboard, probably because is very thin, what you think? or I'm a Perfectionist?

Hi, the first N900 that i had had the same problem. After i change it in the shop for another (coz he got some dead pixels), i got another with a much better build keyboard. No space under the "C" anymore, its looks like there is a newer batch of phones where theye solve that problem.

(sorry for my bad English)

Mine had the same problem as well, the front part of the bezel doesn't clicks into place very well. I cut a very thin strip of double sided tape and drop it in between the gap and it looks perfect right now. Can't even notice the tape even if i look very closely.

One thing that annoys me is a squeak when opening and closing the slider, other than that all seems pretty solid.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: N900 Keyboard Frame: Broken, Loose, Has Gaps?

Mine creeks near the midpoint of the phone, right below the keyboard. I have a suspicion it isn't very strong and it might snap. Also, pressing the space bar doesn't seem very solid as well. Nokia is really good about warranty repairs though. I'll probably let it ride for a couple months if it lasts that long, play a lot of keyboard mashing games, and then have Nokia repair it.

Blaxe 2010-01-29 08:38

Re: Gap between case?

Didn't meant that in an offensiv way. A device with a price of at least 600 € should be flawless imho and hardware failures like that are not acceptable.

Hmmm will they repair it for free after a couple o months? German law says that after six month of using the buyer needs to proof that thew mistake was there from the beginning....

I don't know about Germany, but in the United States the warranty procedure was pretty straightforward. I called them and told them the problems I was having, I sent them just the phone (battery cover, SD card, etc is not needed), and they sent it back with new parts installed. They paid for shipping both ways so it cost me nothing other than driving to drop off the package.

Besides, if Nokia's new batch of N900s have a new keyboard and trim installed from the factory as a previous post seems to indicate, then it would occur to me that Nokia is aware of the problem being there from the beginning and should fix it for free.

Just make sure you did not buy the N900 knock-off from China (with dual sim card, etc).
