Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
I'm happy that it is not only me who is sad because of android... So it is now pointless to wait for n9 or anything from HMD Global.
Meego would be a great step forward I think but... you know... android on n9. Who cares...? Just another phone nothing else... I imagine that n900 would come with android... brrrr... nightmare... :) |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
more crap with unlockable bootloader

Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
How i love to read these old news...
"In retrospect the factors that led to MeeGo’s downfall are easy to point out. Nokia developed Harmattan and MeeGo alongside with Symbian. Resources went to a huge waste, when both platforms were developing their own Qt-based user interface design tools. Applications were being simultaneously developed on top of unfinished development tools. Furthermore, the communication within the Maemo team was lacking. Harmattan’s development begun alongside Fremantle, or Maemo 5, but no information was exchanged between the respective teams. The development mistakes made with Fremantle were repeated in the development of Harmattan...." https://muropaketti.com/mobiili/the-...f-nokia-meego/ |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
A Nokia N9, running android, on top of a Mediatek chipset? I’d rather have no (new) N9 then.

Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
Geez
Haven't they just started filling in the earth on the grave?? I don't think this is going to be resurrection ... From what can be surmised ... it is worst possible fears realized... More like grave robbery by turn of the century scientists to experiment on the fresh body ... (and I fear.. from what has been noted ...) to turn the poor N9 .... into an abomination... an Androidenstein Duh-duh-DUH!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cphNpqKpKc4 |

Harmattan belongs to MS; meego is open source (and yes, RPM based!) That'd be quite a blow below the belt, for HMD to come up with a re-wamped MeeGo version on a re-furbished N9; it would make Jolla redundant *instantly* |

Harmattan as well as Fremantle belong to Nokia Technologies, not to Microsoft. Meego belongs to Linux Consortium, Mer is open source. And to top it off, Maemo belongs to us. :) |

EDIT : hold it, harmattan has not been sold to Ms? Does this mean it could be licensed to HMD? |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
M$ got their grubby paws only on what they thought was important.
Thankfully. So 'tween Nokia and us ...we kept the REALLY important stuff Meego ..... Similar to the (old) Mer ...(that "was" and "almost was" ) for the n8x0... sadly I relegate to the island of Half - Assed Completion... which is a neighbor to the "Island of Misfit Toys"... https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dRIQFYMMNYY/maxresdefault.jpg (though I still have Mer installed on one n810 ..I enjoy puttering around with now and then...) (better to "do" than just reminisce ...) |

I thinking if I should email Nokia asking if they have anything like that planned. Problem is Sailfish right now is a niche OS, but for sure would make sense a N9 revival to come with Sailfish |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
Nokia "partnering"?
Past doubtful. I think the days of Mega corps doing it all ...device and OS and support and maintain..are done. Tough enough now ..to make the device and support it. and for the device to be a success. Blackberry had it all. Just Like Nokia. But the forces at work in the world... do not make it viable. And "partnering"? why bother when the device can simply be made.. by following a recipe...following (now very) standardized predefined bulletproof and idiot proof needed specs ...for android? And people will consume it. and it will be a fiscal win on the company balance books. Not a gamble...against odds with a probable loss. Very doubtful there will any partnering. And all OS upstart rivals to Android and Iphone will always be niche OS's ... until one comes out of the gate...from the start...with just as many apps...just as easy to use...if not easier...than what currently exists... The upstarts have proven this time and again now.. |

HMD definitely does not want Harmattan, as by itself it is only part of the game; they would have to resurrect all the backend stuff for SW update and application marketplace from zero as nothing remains in place. Using Android they can leverage Google to do the heavy lifting so my guess is they are going to revive only the physical form of the N9 device, creating a zombie-from-the-grave that looks like the real thing but runs standard Android as the operating system. Very probably it is not even going to have a swipe-enabled launcher. That, of course if any of this rumour is true. |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
so...... chinese copy with fake/wrong OS onboard :D

Since I'm Chinese, what I can see is that most companies in China which are making mobile phones, will first consider if they can earn money from the consumers. Such niche OSes like Meego, Maemo, SFOS or whatever, only very few people are using them, and they won't make money from those OSes. Just like a joke among some Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile users in China,“We are just no more than 1% of the mobile users, so those big companies will never make those apps available to us(e.g. Alipay). Anyway, still hope HMD can do something good. But locked bootloaders? Horrible. Mediatek SoC? The performance is probably OK, but MTK never releases their source code. That's really f**king if anyone wants to develop for MTK phones. |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
Hmm better would be N950 with Harmattan 2.0 or Sailfish (but with VoIP, VPN and Encryption).
Than the price doesnt care for me. Shut up and take my money |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
If it had an unlocked bootloader / came with stock sailfish OS ( fat chance on both ) I would buy it day one, the form factor of n9 was absolutely perfect, never has a phone felt better in my palm and using it one handed was really comfortable.

Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
Hahahahahahha...
(sorry...not laughing AT you...salamisami...rather ..at your statement...) Buuutttttttttt.... I could easily think of MANY things that feel MUCH better in my palm ... AND using one-handed ... than an n9... or a phone at all ...for that matter... :D |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
WOOOOOO!!!
Can't believe I missed it! I hit 5001 thanks! Wow ... I must send cigars to pichlo and juiceme ... since they seem to be the major contributors to the tower of Babel ...which is the number of "thanks" I have racked up... Gawd knows why they thank me all the time :D |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
If nothing else, at least some company may be considering making devices that comfortably fit into your pockets again.

Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
That reminds me of that lady who was showing off a new purse to her girlfriends. It was made from... let's say special... err... leather. If you stroked it the right way, it would expand to the size of a steamer trunk.
@endso, thanks, but no thanks. No cigars. I don't smoke. Not even cigars. Although I did make an exception with a hookah. |
Re: "Nokia N9 Rising From the Grave?"
hahahahaha
ahhh made me laugh... You know I was referring to my girlfriend as an occupier of my hands... But hey... When the girls far far away away.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wJpdA-LE3o |
