NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

Hi all,
I just received this mail from NeoPwn:

Quote:

Subject: NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

It's official..

The NeoPwn Mobile Pentesting project is proud to announce that it is merging
with BackTrack, to produce the first ever BackTrack Mobile suite!

The migration of the NeoPwn project will give way to a sharp development
team, focused on fully supporting the Nokia N900 mobile phone. Future plans
of the project will extend support for other mobile devices as they become
compatible.

This is an exciting leap from the original project, as there are incredible
improvements in hardware, usability and its open source nature. Community
support will be provided and users will be encouraged to take part once the
project is released.

Preconfigured hardware will be available for purchase on the Neopwn.com
website, for those who do not wish to install the OS themselves on the
device.

And for those that currently have the Nokia N900 mobile phone and who have
expressed interest in the second coming of the project - we have a few
surprises in store... stay tuned!

Yes and no: you cannot run it with the standard wlan adapter of the N900. You need to connect an external Wlan adapter on the USB .

They don't call the n900 a hacker phone for no reason...

Wonderful! The community cannot wait for this revision of Back Track to come out, the N900 has a huge following base among penetration testers and ethical 'hacker-types'.

Please keep us updated and thank you for your effort!

Erm. So, the N900 supports USB host mode now, does it?

No, um.... read the thread again and think about why N900 isn't a great pocket warrior's tool.

Re: NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

well, sorry for my limited knowledge, but what would be possible to do with this program ?

Re: NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

I'm confused, the webpage says that they will sell hardware that's going to be similar to the n900, so the question is: is NeoPwn a software that's going to be compatible with my current n900 (will it support the default wifi module), or do I have to buy the other piece of hardware?

qole 2010-02-23 20:58

Re: NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

I'm confused. neopwn put this thread under Alternatives and refers to an "OS" being installed. The screen shots look like Maemo 5, however.

Is this truly an Alternative OS, or should I move this thread to "Applications"?

BackTrack Moble will be based on Debian (an OS); there will be a few installation options for it.

When the release is ready, we will will provide the supported installation options.

Sounds sweet..
Do i read this right ?
NeoPwn can be installed as a second os ? Would be nice.

I get a 404 when i go to http://mobile.backtrack-linux.org :(

So my Alfa USB could be used with NeoPwn ?

Re: NeoPwn v2 = BackTrack Mobile!

Can you still make/receive phonecalls with this OS?
Will "NetStumbler" be included?

mail_e36 2010-02-25 00:01

Re: NeoPwn for N900... :)

I'm guessing it won't dual-boot the N900, but rather run as an application with the Maemo 5 environment. And that is the best idea, I think, because you'd retain your phone functionality while using it... so you never miss a call! =)

P.S. - The title of this thread should be "BackTrack for N900" :)

wow.... i read this whole thread.. went the website link... and nowhere either in the thread or at neopwns actual website (tthat i could find) does it state anywhere what the product actually does. then i went to wikipedia. all so cumbersome. i'm still not quite sure. is it an os ? or a network intrusion testing program ?

roger_27: BackTrack is a penetration-testing distribution, which is intended for security professionals or hobbyists who want to audit the security of their networks or systems. The colour of your hat is up to you. From glancing at the screenshots, my guess would be that this is a collection of software used by the main BackTrack distribution, customized to work (well) on the N900, and with some sort of mobile-optimized launcher/frontend. If they've actually made a custom Maemo distribution, I'm sure people like Stskeeps would have been involved, and we probably would have heard about it.
EDIT: My guess is that they've built a custom kernel as well, although at least one custom build is already available in -devel.

I know... ;) Tried changing it, but couldn't... :)

BTW There's an official thread/announcement here... (Created after this one) :)

And it's an OS, so to use it You would probably install it as a secondary OS (maybe on external memory card) and boot into it... ;)

EDIT -> Look at the NeoPwn website: http://neopwn.com/...:

Quote:

Neopwn runs on an optimized FULL custom Debian operating system that boots off of a microSD card with a custom Linux kernel, with a vast support range for module drivers, allowing the network security tester the ability to perform various network penetration auditing tasks that are normally carried out on a notebook or desktop workstation.

As you suggest, I have read the thread again. I'm still not sure what you mean though.

It might be the case that an external wifi adapter isn't required (the only clue here is the wait/cough comment), or perhaps someone has figured out how to get USB host mode working.

What is your take on this - please elaborate.

My guess is that they patched the wifi driver (wl12xx) for injection since its based on the mac80211 stack.
