[Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

After nearly a year since starting (entirely my fault), the first "stable" community SSU is now available in the maemo.org repository. Many thanks to all the testers who made this possible :-)

So, without further ado, see the wiki for installation instructions and changelog.

Now that this is out it frees up -testing for more experimental work. If anyone wants to contribute in any way, please ping me. Ways to participate include
  • Adopt a package, evaluate and apply existing patches to it.
  • Discover patches or other improvements that can be applied.
  • For the extra brave, follow the community-testing repository and report any issues found.
  • Maintain and improve the wiki pages.

For reference, the old thread is here and still contains a lot of useful information.

i guess one area to investigate would be how recent a version of modest is still compatible with diablo.

Flashing went fine on both my 800 and 810. Many thanks.
I had flashed the interim "Testing" SSU already on both machines.

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

The .install file of the "stable" version looks like this:
Code:

[install]
catalogues = community-testing
package = community-ssu-enabler

[community-testing]
name = Community SSU
uri = http://repository.maemo.org/community/
components = free non-free

It would work but is confusing people which open it in a editor. I assume this would be the "correct" version:

Code:

[install]
catalogues = community
package = community-ssu-enabler

[community]
name = Community SSU
uri = http://repository.maemo.org/community/
components = free non-free

But that's peanuts :)

Thanks for making this happen!

This sounds awesome! As someone new to this, would it be possible to share some of the benefits (aside from the short term goals) that someone could expect to get from using this?

Thank you in advance!

True, the catalogue label can be confusing (it's just a label though so as long as the two red bits match it'll work). I don't have access to modify it, but I'll ping X-Fade to change it.

Answered on earlier thread with the following:

Quote:

If you are not affected by any of the bugs fixed (see changelog), then not much. The main enhancement so far is the screen rotation support (but you may already have this installed independently anyway). There are also some more minor enhancements to busybox and PDF viewer which make life a bit easier, probably not the highest priority for most people but they were for me, so there ;-)

Going forward, what would you like to see included (keeping in mind that non-free components are out of scope for obvious reasons)?
That changelog is here.

You can see generally the earlier thread, posts 544 through 547.

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

Sorry if this has been covered but I didn't see the answer in the wiki:

I'm currently running the OS2008 Community SSU 5.2010.32-3 testing package. Should I now un-install this and install the stable SSU pack?

Also, is the enabler package different than for the testing package - and if so can I now also uninstall the testing-enabler?

Thanks.

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

If you are accepting suggestions on what should/could go into the next SSU I got one for you :)

Draglock (or the later version) - The ability to lock the widgets in place on the screen to avoid accidentally moving them around.

No need, you can just upgrade from 32-3 to 33-1 via the application manager. If you prefer to track the stable version from now on you can just remove (or disable) the -testing repository from Tools -> Application catalogue.

No, as both repositories are signed with the same key.

AKA bug 2639, it's already in the queue :-)

Two very off-the-topic questions:

Is this an N8X0 focused project? Can a similar move be expected from N900 community?

Yes, this is very much Diablo-specific.

Yes, MohammadAG is starting something similar for Fremantle, see this thread.

remind me, the brower ui is closed yes? so no way for someone outside of nokia to fix the extra enter/return that we get when we use dpad center to bring up the thumbs osk? And is there any chance to get a microb build with a more speedy javascript engine via community ssu?

... Or to have the option to change the DPad up & down behavior to work like Tear (or do page up & page down to make fpp happy :) ).

hmm, did a bit of checking using webkit-eal, and it seems the double enter/return goes away when using it so i guess the issue could be related to microb rather then browser-ui.

as such, perhaps investigating a microb update would be in order? hmrf, maybe i should take another look at getting that scratchbox set up...

Hey lma,

Same weirdness as before (super small font), only this time, choosing any applet, even a stock one, crashes hildon-desktop (white scrreen then default icons only).

I'm thinking it's probably Xmms related since this is the app I use the most by far, but hey, what do I know? :)

Happened several times on my N800, crashes hildon-desktop, white screen then default icons only, ok after a reboot.

Update: I determined that when I deselect "Large Statusbar Clock", I no longer have the problem.

Does this also happen with one of the stock themes? Alternatively can you point me to somewhere I can download the theme you're using so I can test it locally?

Anything else non-standard on your setup?

Update, happened a second time, just now.

Same question, I need some way to reproduce this.

Could the next SSU contain a fix for bug 472: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=472

I use Openntpd to resolve it but it would be a handy feature to haven delivered through the OS.

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

I tried an experiment: trying to install the community SSU update directly on an SD-based OS to which I boot using Penguinbait's Console-Tools. It was unable to update due to numerous "Application packages missing"

I'm supposing that the experiment failed (as I anticipated) because the community SSU can be installed only into the N8x0's own internal flash memory. Correct?

Will installing it on the internal flash memory impact my dual-booting? I'm supposing it won't; OTOH, to get it to my SD-card-based OS (which is my primary OS), I'd have to clone using the updated system, which would mean lots of re-building of what I've done on my SD-based OS since my SD-based OS and Apps is much more tweaked and developed than my flash-based system. Right?

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

I have tried the Testing SSU and This new stable one and 2 different installs. On external SD, and Internal storage. Neither gave me any problem. Before saying install/ok to install, you should have a details and/or installing/problems tab in application manager. That might tell you what packages are missing, or at least give us a clue of the issue.

I don't think the problem is with booting on anything other than internal flash.

I'm using Nuvo Clear (sp?) theme.

Never once did I encounter this during the year or so using stock Diablo kernel.

It occurs after locking then unlocking the device.

Reboot brings it all back without even needing to recheck applets.

This bug seems almost impossible to fish for. :)

cant say i have seen the error being described, tho i have seen some graphical issues (statusbar icons that come and go, osk that goes missing when a drop down list from say a addressbar covers it). But if its related to the community update or just general bit rot (i have yet to reflash since the update to diablo) i am unsure.

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

Installed last one (stable) upgrade.
Now mmc2 seems to be "Read-only filesystem". My /var/cache/apt and /var/lib/apt were moved to mmc2 and they worked perfect, but after upgrade apt-get update says that it can't work because of read-only filesystem.
Maybe I broke it, but I think it happened because of update. Now I moved apt dirs back and apt-get works.

For example:
Cannot change anything in /media/mmc2/var/cache/apt - Read-only file system
Cannot delete /media/mmc2/var/cache/apt - Read-only file system

Have you tried manually deleting the virtual memory file?

I use openntpd too and find it invaluable, but I think it works fine as a package in extras rather than forcing it on everyone.

Thanks, using version 4.0 from https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_...elease_id=1971 but no crashes so far. Not sure if it's the right one, as the taskbar icons look like the stock ones while yours are very different. The font does look a bit smaller than the default, though not as small as in your previous screenshots.

Quote:

I don't think it's the kernel, if there's anything in the community that triggers it I would suspect the X server (I'm still not 100% sure I guessed the build flags correctly on that one).

Quote:

Is that device lock or screen lock? Does it also happen when the screen is re-activated after blanking? If so it sounds like an applet crashing and taking hildon-desktop down with it.

Quote:

Yeah, that's standard. As a defence mechanism, when hildon-desktop crashes it gets restarted without loading any third-party plugins (otherwise it could easily find itself in an endless restarting loop), but it doesn't modify its configuration so a reboot brings it back as set up by the user.

Quote:

This bug seems almost impossible to fish for. :)
The usual way of tracking something like this down is disabling all desktop/statusbar/taskbar applets and re-enabling them one by one until the bug reappears.

But since we now have two reports, you can start by listing your applets. Chances are the trigger would be one common in both tablets.

That's most likely unrelated. It means the file system is corrupted (when the kernel detects that it remounts it read-only as a precaution to avoid damaging it further).

There are many ways this can happen, like mounting on another computer via USB and unplugging without unmounting cleanly, unclean shutdown (removing the battery, or running out of battery suddenly) and so on. It may also be bug 2940 if you're one of the unlucky first buyers (though you would probably have noticed years ago), so check for that first.

Otherwise you should unmount the filesystem and repair it with dosfsck, it should be fine after that.

Wow, I'm speechless (well, not really).
In spite of what the marketing says about the openness of maemo they won't even disclose the build flags.
Cannot say I'm really surprised.

DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="maemo-launcher,thumb,vfp,parallel=4"

should be the right ones, I mean, autobuilder uses same..

And then CFLAGS="-Wall -g -O2 -mfpu=vfp -mfloat-abi=softfp -mcpu=arm1136jf-s -mtune=arm1136jf-s" if not indicated already.

Wow, thanks, that's exactly the info I was looking for!

Using the above I get exactly the same Xomap binary as before, so if there is a bug it's not due to build flags at least, good to know.

I hadn't seen "maemo-launcher" as an option before, but that explains some other differences I noticed in GUI apps. Unfortunately the deb tools in scratchbox are too old to handle "parallel", but a few packages deal with it on their own in debian/rules. I'll probably adapt others to do the same for sanity's sake.

Kroll 2010-08-29 15:56

Re: [Announce] First "stable" Diablo community SSU released and call for participation

okey, I rebooted, then deleted swap.
next:
umount /media/mmc2
fsck.vfat -a -d /media/mmc2/ -u /media/mmc2/
mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/mmc2
reboot

Now it works perfect, but I still don't know what it was. Btw, bug 2940 is not for me, 'cause I own my n810 more than 1 year.
