Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Brilliant.

My operator allows me to forward all SMS to an e-mail address, at the switch - but this is really great for those who can't.

Curious, what do you use to send the mail? Modest backend or a hand rolled client?

Another great app. May I suggest the name text2mail for this great app?

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

<edit>Never mind - it sends from the e-mail application, not Conversations. I found it. Super piece of work. Thank you.</edit>
I love the concept. I attempted to do this yesterday and discovered there was no capability available.
  • I downloaded/installed the program from the garage page
  • Rebooted.
  • Found the Textmessage to E-Mail settings line in Settings.
  • I've enabled forwarding for SMS both incoming and outgoing.
  • Selected the appropriate From: e-mail account
  • Filled in the default To: field
  • Pressed Done

When I try to forward an SMS from Conversations I can not figure out how to invoke the send to email address part of this. When I enter an e-mail address in the address line of Conversations Forward pane I receive the "x@y.com is not one of your contacts" error message. I looked in Applications and did not see this was a stand-alone application.

I know it will be very simple and straightfoward once I'm shown but I am missing it at the moment.

so i will recive all sms i choose to get them in my mail?
will i be able to reply them by mail to?

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

@hawaii
Yes it uses modest for sending the mail.
Since the PR 1.2 and Qt we have a plugin in modest
(qtm-modest-plugin) with a better dbus-api for sending
emails.

@Shinigamijim
No, I don't know how you could reply to them by mail.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

small question, are the forwarded SMSes still being kept in the conversations DB? if so, could they be prevented of doing so ? i'm just thinking of an application I wanted a long time ago already for my N900, having one public and one 'hidden' secret area, receiving all calls/sms to/from a certain blacklist of contacts. but just the forwarding and no storing would be fine as well, as a start.

nicolai 2011-02-02 21:50

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

They are kept in the conversations DB. And you can not
enable/disable forwarding for a single contact.

Great App :-) . Definitely will make the already versatile N900 more versatile.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

You are a hero.

One question, does the application only send SMS received since activated, or can it send all existing SMS in Conversations?

Second option would be great as it would allow us to make a full backup of the received SMS.

Another question, could it be possible to define the subject of the emailed messages with tags such as "SMS from [CONTACT]" ?. This way it would be easy to create filters in GMail to arrange the messages.

I can't count all the great applications I have in my phone developed by you...

For this, you can use glogarchive.

Hi Nicolai, thanks for your response.

Unfortunately glogarchive is not exactly what I was looking for. If I could send all the SMS to my GMail account, I could filter them by sender/receiver and see all of them as threads.

Keep up the good work!

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Please enlighten me.
Does SMS/IM forwarding cost any SMS charge?

Looks like another killer app for the N900 :D

hawaii 2011-02-03 16:03

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

No. It's being sent over e-mail via whatever available data connection.

No SMS is used at all.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Answering would be cool. If you set the subject to something like "Incoming SMS ##<number>#" it would be easy to
- answer to a sms (some cleanup of the body before sending the sms would be cool)
- write a new sms using this method
However, care should be taken that, if incoming and outgoing e-mail-account are both set up in maemo's mailer, an incoming sms is not treated as an outgoing one.

Additionally, the e-mail receive intervall should autmatically be shortened while the application is active.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Great. So I don't have to worry about forwarding spam SMS :p

With this nice app my spare handset will be used for call-forward setting only - I'm crossing the border between Hong Kong and China
almost daily with my trusty N900.

Cheers!

taike_hk 2011-02-03 16:35

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Maybe I misunderstand...
It should only forward SMS received on the active SIM to Email.

WhiteWolf 2011-02-04 15:53

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Congratulations, another great utility.

I would argue that controls on the matter, besides the number, the contact's name if it is in the database.

Other data are date and time of SMS in the N900.

The power forward an SMS as email and otherwise, manually would be a great application.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

can the enabling (and disabling) be scripted/run from xterm - so It can be integrated in alarmd or desktop command widget?

nicolai 2011-02-22 08:16

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

The settings are stored in gconf.
(list all settings:
gconftool -R /apps/maemo/txtmsgtomail)

And you can use gconftool from you script to change the settings.
(for example:
gconftool -s /apps/maemo/txtmsgtomail/disable_incoming_forwarding true -t bool)

nikolajhendel 2011-02-22 10:34

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

very cool - thanks.
Now I just have to do the same for call forwarding applet, and the perfect forward (voice+sms) can commence.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Hi Nicolai,

I suppose you are extremely busy with the myriad of applications you are maintaining and the CSSU but, are you still working on this?

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Hi ivgalvez,

yes, I want to make the subject line configurable, so the user
can define something like this:
"New message from ${SENDER}"
and the email subject line will be:
"New message from 0127...."

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

New version 0.2 now includes a "subject" line in the
control panel applet.
Instead of the just senders phone number you can define your
own subject line. For example:
"SMS from $(SENDER)"
where $(SENDER) will be replaced with the SMS-Senders
phone number.

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

great update thank you :) one question...is it possible to make the program "auto connect" and disconnect from wifi/mobile network ? when a new sms is received the app connect itself to wifi/mobile network and when the email is sent it disconnect itself.. saving a lot of battery life..im not sure if the second part is possible but this can be fixed with autodisconnect app :P

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

Just noticed this app the other day and wanted to say thanks - works perfectly, and very handy as I'm normally sitting at my desk with my email 'closer' than n900 :)

Also handy if your contacts have an sms->email forwarder - for example, I can SMS the wife by mailing 0123456789@gin.nl

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

there would never be a suituation where i would not receive the text, is this intended as a backup almost ?

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

I'm still trying to arrange the SMS as threads in GMail.

Would it be possible to use different text templates for incoming and outgoing messages?

In my case, I'd like to use this kind of templates:
- Incoming: SMS - $(SENDER)
- Outgoing: SMS - $(RECEIVER)

This way all messages to/from the same number will be recognized by GMail as being part of the same thread and could be seen like in the Conversations application.

Another super duper addition could be using Contacts names in the templates so it wouldn't matter what number a contact is using, all the messages would be sorted in one conversation (that's something the Conversations application can't do and would be very useful).

Edit: Just realized that it doesn't matter who's the sender or the receiver, the parameter $SENDER always is filled with the contact's phone number.

nicolai 2011-03-30 23:58

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

New version 0.3
I added a second subject configuration line.
Now you can set different subjects for incoming
and outgoing messages.
And another variable $(RECEIVER)
When forwarding incoming messages
$(SENDER) is replaced with the senders id and
$(RECEIVER) is replaced with your id and
when forwarding an outgoing messages
$(SENDER) is replaced with your id and
$(RECEIVER) is replaced with the receivers id.

For example, you can make this subject lines:
outgoing : $(SENDER) -> $(RECEIVER)
incoming : $(RECEIVER) <- $(SENDER)

I can't get it to work with CSSU! Does anybody had this problem?

nicolai 2011-05-05 10:02

Re: [Announce] Textmessage to E-Mail forwarding

What is the problem with CSSU,
for me it is working fine.

BTW there is a problem with nokia messaging.
If you have only your nokia messaging account and no
other email-ac****s, then it is not possible to configure
which email-account should be used.
