If you "try" the SFOS port, there is no reason to look further ;)

Well, that was a very bad idea :D Installing SailfishOS after LineageOS resulted a non-booting SailfishOS.
I reverted my Pro1 to stock Android for the preparation for sale. But then the curiosity won and I decided to try again. This time updated the stock os to the latest updates, enabled usb debugging and then followed the SailfishOS installation routine using the sailfishos-t5-release-3.3.0.16-devel-20200507.zip.
Now the SailfishOS booted and I was able to perform initial setup. Logging in to my Jolla account did not succeed at first - that needed an extra reboot. So now I have something to play with - although the sale is still active... German qwertz keyboard layout is one of the first things to try ;)

@acrux but why....? Why do you want to sell your Pro1? xD

There are/were several considerations:
1. My Nexus 6 shamu is still running very strong with Android 10 supported.
2. LineageOS development stopped for several months and as I have qwertz model, then the keyboard was not in usable state. (This has changed recently, so let's see :D ).
3. SailfishOS is like a fresh air in the world of Android. And the keyboard was easily configurable (Thanks! @Kabouik&Mosen). But my communication relies heavily on xmpp/jabber. SailfishOS has developed greatly in this aspect and in person to person chats it is OK with MAM and message carbons etc. However - still no MUC.
No ssh connection to Pro1 over wifi (fortunately usb connection worked). Wifi hotspot very unreliable - do not connect usb cable (eg. for charging) during session. No access from PC to either internal storage or sd card with usb cable. Several other small glitches here and there. Don't get me wrong - I like SailfishOS on Pro1, but I can't rely on it in my everyday life...

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I'm curious about the lack of SSH connection - I've been doing a fair amount of development on my Pro1 ssh'd in over wifi and haven't had any issues. Not that the OS as a whole has no issues, but that specific part has been rock solid for me.

Just to check the unlikely case, since it works perfectly fine for me: any chance you forgot to enable it in Settings > Developer Tools?

It probably has nothing to do with the Fx. I found that too on my Jolla1. The last time I was using it reliably was summer 2019. Tried again in April 2020 - it worked for a few minutes, then shut off. Connected devices are still connected but have no internet. One of the recent updates must have broken it.

Update:
Sorry, I take that back! Hotspot worked again after a reboot. Probably more to do with my data connection and the fact it had not been used for a while than with the phone itself.

Just a news update on the Endless Proš waiting saga.

On July 6th, many (all ?) pre-orderers received this message from Fxtec :
Quote:

Hello!

We hope you are well and keeping safe.

You’ll be pleased to hear that we have now allocated stock to your order, which is due to be shipped on Thursday/Friday this week. We will send you another email with your shipping information and tracking details in soon, so please keep an eye out for further updates.

We would just like to say thank you so much for your ongoing patience and support, especially over the last few months. It has been tough but we are pushing through & we know the Pro1 will be worth the wait.

Sincerely,

Team F(x)tec
The suspense was intense, as the journey seemed to come to its end, but no shipping information mail, and hopes began to fade again...

And today : new message from Fxtec !

Quote:

Hello!

We hope you are well and keeping safe.

We are really sorry about the delay in shipping your device.

Just so that you are aware, we had originally planned to ship your device a couple of weeks ago, but have since been working to resolve a contractual agreement which recently expired, and therefore prevented any Pro1's leaving the factory.

We have now resolved this and renewed the agreement so there will not be any further issues moving forwards. We can confirm that your device will be leaving the factory next week, so keep an eye out for tracking details.

Apologies again for the delay, and thanks for your patience.

Sincerely,

Team F(x)tec
At this point, I don't know if I should be happy, or prepare myself to wait a couple week again to receive a new "We promise you you will get your phone... soon..." message. :/

When this phone will finally be in my hands, my first action with it will be to call the Guinness Book of Records to ask them to award Fxtec for the world's longest rollercoaster..

@n-mi
Wouldn't like to be in their shoes either. Their eagerness to start a new roller-coaster adventure, i.e. new phone project, should be below zero. I do hope so for them, not for us.
And yes, I got those two mails too, I do copy your remarks ... but do all the more thank Chen, Adrian & Co.

I don't have and never had such issue, with Jolla, Jolla C, Xperia X Compact or Proš. It might be related to the operator or to the quality of the signal where the phone is located I think.

I concede. I updated the post to correct the BS I may inadvertently have spread.

I hate to ask but has anyone dropped their Pro1 yet? I'm not dreaming it will survive falling off a balcony like the Nokia N8 but I know my phones don't have the safest life and I don't want to destroy one.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

There has been multiple fall reports on the Discord server. Sometimes there's no significant damage. I think Mosen dropped his a couple times but just got cosmetic scratches. There has been broken screens too. Fortunately the screen is not hard to source and replace apparently. Someone already broke it three times and is expecting his fourth replacement screen. :>

Koiruus 2020-08-24 03:37

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I have dropped mine several times. The highest drop was about one meter from my hands to concrete floor. Some scratches to backside of the phone, but no real damage. And haven't affected to functionality. Haven't yet dropped mine with keyboard open. I wonder how durable the hinge really is, when it comes to impacts caused by dropping.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

A friend of mine dropped his Pro1 and about a third of the screen shattered.
He contacted Fxtec and they gave him two options.
The first was that they would send him a new screen so he could replace it himself.
The second was that he could send in his Pro1 so they could fix it for him.
As the costs are about the same he's going for the second option.

Kabouik 2020-08-25 09:02

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

It's pretty cool that they offer both options, by the way. It may be economically better for them, but it also requires some trust into their users, and in the end if the user can do it himself, everyone wins: no need to wait for a replacement after sending the broken device.

xman 2020-08-25 15:46

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I kinda wish they didn't go for the curved screen. As I image it increase the changes of a damaged screen when dropped.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

So, have now been able to use Pro1 for couple of weeks and so far I am very impressed. Actually only main complaint is that due to delays I was not able to make it my work phone so usage is somewhat scarse now, unfortunately.

The keyboard is obviously the most inportant thing with this phone and for me it works really well. The opening mechanism is solid. Keys have solid response. Unfortunately I still have not mastered/managed to open it reliably with just one hand, but maybe someday. I have never been too eager to get the latest cpu or most ram, just slightly more than what I absolutely would need in my current usercase and this phone answers to that well currently.

Some complaints as well. The fingerprint sensor is somewhat poorly placed. I often notice, that while taking the phone to my hand, i already wake the sensor with too many failed attemps accidentally and when I actually do place my finger on the sensor, I have to wait for the failed, accidental contact to replenish.

Also, when the keyboard is open, volume and lock buttons are cumbesome to reach.

Few questions for others. Is your Pro1 picky with chargers? I have several chargers that it refuses to use. ie Samsung and iPhone chargers only chage for few seconds and then the phone refuses to use them anymore.

Have anyone found an really working cover for this thing yet? Btw. lost my sleeve that came with the order. Forgot it to train. Have to ask if it could be ordered from Fxtec

Thank you for Fxtech and company for this phone

That was very annoying for me too while i was using stock android for a while. There are ways to raise the amount of attempts as i read, only i never tried.

But Sailfishs inability to wake the device from FP-Reader fixes this behaviour

On sfos you have to first wake via power button and then just roll down your thumb to nicely hit the reader below the button while in Portrait. Works very reliable now for me. With other fingers it is less convenient since you usually want to unlock while in a car mount or such. So you do not see the FP reader but need to move from the PW-button to it blindly which sometimes take a while to master.

The placement seems to be a feature tho since it is most convenient to unlock when you wake the phone by opening the KBD to landscape and then use the index finger, which in my case is exactly long enough to hit the FP-reader behind the angled screen comfortably and exact while the hands are in regular "holding" position!
But since i did not send finger length data to F(x)tec at any point it might be coincidence :D

yes, i dropped it at least 3 times on concrete falling from my Chefs-Jackets pocket while leaning forward too much before i stopped putting it there
One hard drop was at Fosdem which Netman witnessed. It fell from "clumsy finger" hight not just to the feet level but even 50cm more since i was standing elevated on steps.
The screen survived with a tiny little chip below the surface that is not felt but can be seen in some angle. I only noticed it when trying different screen foils afterwards. Tried to make a picture but it was not noticable in the light conditions i have currently.

The back however. geeez. Can we make a competition for the most battered Proš plz :p

The foiled edges i customized from "Dragon Grips" after the major drops do not look too pretty but help a lot. Never dropped it again with them applied in +5month.

Thank you for your encouraging words and valuable suggestions. Pro1 is the very first product and we will bring the experience and your suggestions to the next step!

Regarding the sleeve, unfortunately it was ordered the same amount as the device. But I can give you a spare new one (from samples) if needed. I see Jordi can give something even better. :)

Exactly my experience with SFOS too, both for landscape and portrait.

Also, I love the sleeve. I know you've been through a lot of complaints when it was offered as a replacement for the protective case that was once planned (but proved inconvenient with the hinge), but I'm glad that you guys came up with this sleeve. It is clear it doesn't suit everyone's needs, many people don't even use it, but I sure am happy I have mine. It saved my Proš from ending up like Mosen's. :>

I can corroborate that statement, my heart skipped a beat seeing it xD. If I recall it fell about half a meter from where we were sitting onto pavement, screen first, damaging the corner of screen protector but surviving very well.

Mine never dropped that hard but I've had it pulled off my desk by the usb cable being accidentally pulled which really can't be good for the usb port (falling on the connector). It's survived without a scratch :).

Yes, I have noticed the same. Some Samsung chargers won't work. I think that the charger won't work if it supports some other quick charging system than what is used in Pro1 (and Samsung has a different system).

Sooo, I take it, still not all pre-orders are served?
10-12 weeks shipping is also not too encouraging in terms of placing a new order.
I mean, do we know if any more devices are going to be made after pre-orders?

Please let it be less than or about 5.5in in size. And perhaps no curved screen (not a deal breaker).

I would buy it tomorrow!

Also I hope this endeavor has proven profitable for fxtec. It was a very unfortunate luck to have to deal with the shut down as you would be ramping up production. At the moment I don't see any other company making the kind of device you guys are. So keep forging forward.

I was finally able to convince our IT guys let me use Pro1 as my work phone.

few things that I have noticed since. First of all, the hinge has some free movement on the right side. Was it always there, dont know. How about you others with pro1?

My bigger problem is with bluetooth. Read that others have had these problems as well. In my car and with my bt headphones the phone does not transfer call audio to the earpiece/car audio. Funny thing is, that I can listen to music in car and with headphones, only call audio is affected. And it doesen´t matter whether I use BT only or android auto.

Has anyone with these problems overcome them somehow?

PXC 550 and BH-111 working fine here with my Pro1. I can even multitask with a PXC 550, N900 running Rockbox and the Pro1 as phone, Rockbox gets automatically paused when I get called and also somehow automatically (?!) resumes when I hangup.

This one is kinda intended because if the hinge will be firm you won't be able to open your keyboard.

Has anyone been able to solve this problem? Read from fxtec forum that others have had similar problems with BT no ttansfering the audio to car stereos.

As I travel a lot with car for work ans take calls while driving, this is really becoming a serious problem for me.

Unfortunately I have the same problems. These were already solved. But than I had to reflash when encryption was introduced to the unstable build. Now I am an the stable build, with the already solved problems. Very frustrating. But i fear I have to wait. For me even more frustrating that after that reflash my battery life became much worse. Before i got 36h hours easily now I sometime sruggle to get over the day.

I have been unable find any solutions. Were did you find your "old" solutins that used to work? Are you on stock or Lineage or Sailfish? I am on Lineage

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

Oh that´s interesting. I´m on Sailfish. I thought it is a sailfish only problem. But there seem to be a general problem with bluetooth. So that only confirm my thoughts that the porters doing a really nice job. Because they found a solution - unfortunately not one I can use at the moment. I hope for the next update to 3.4. if that doesn´t work i have to switch to unstable again. That would be a pain in the ***, because I would have to set up all anew.... :o
