Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

Just read this article and don't know if i should be happy or sad...

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

it depends on specification of this phone and if it's possible to install different OS on it.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

I think i would buy it. KaiOs is having an upgrade and it may work fine with a good hardware

Yea, I think a lot depends on whether it is closed down like a clam or open to tinkering. I just now realized that the re-released 8110 seems to use KaiOS. Maybe I should get one and dissect it to see if it can be coaxed to run a bash shell.

I mean I would almost certainly buy it because I'm a sucker, but this feels like it would be a downgrade from the real N9. I suppose you'd have a supported/modern setup with all the right TLS and certs etc. to not be a 2nd class www citizen. But you'll still have the "app gap" (but even worse!) that was part of the problem preventing mainstream adoption of the real N9. And you'd no longer have a super-slick UI like the real N9 if the bananaphone KaiOS is anything to go by.

The bananaphone has the developer menu disabled by default, though you can do a magic key combo or a filesystem fiddle to bring it back, although I think Nokia didn't actually want this, so they may lock it down if they're releasing new devices. With the dev menu unlocked you get the ability to sideload PWA apps onto the device, and also get usb debug to the underlying Android bits. But I don't believe the bootloader is (or can be) unlocked, so I guess you're stuck with KaiOS.

I know it would be blasphemy round these parts, but if Nokia did re-release an N9 with a modern OS, I'd much prefer Android over KaiOS. Well, Sailfish ideally, but that ain't gonna happen.

With upgraded HW specs (quadcore?) I'd slap sfos on it ,)

HMD Global is not strictly against unlocking.
Maybe one would have to get loud to make them concider unlocking specifically this device?
All unlockable HMD phones had android though.

We don't even know hardware specs... Or do we?

g*ogle assistant is available on this platform (kai), official yutube and whatap too. in my opinion kai is the next cheap andr*id with all the spying crap and Nukia n9 with kai doesnot make any sense. i wonder why HND is not sailing (sailfis) with jilla :D.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

Stupid googletranslate-joke:

"A few HMD leaders were in the operating system shop and the manager said to the secretary when he stopped at Sailfish ... 'We may take that? Kai we take?' "

Original:

"Muutama HMD:n johtaja oli käyttöjärjestelmäkaupassa ja johtaja sanoi sihteerille pysähtyessään Sailfish osastolle... 'Me otetaan ehkä tää? Kai me otetaan?' "

(may in english = ehkä = kai in finnish...)

sorry OT ;)

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

The linked article speculates that this is a new N9-like phone. Nobody seems to have considered the possibility that it might actually be the original Nokia N9. For those who are unaware, KaiOS is a fork of B2G/Firefox OS. romaxa already ported Firefox OS to the N9 so it wouldn't surprise me if someone has KaiOS running on it too.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

Also the device is too identical to an N9,
you would expect at least minor differences from a new phone.

The USB door, the curvature of the screen, placement of the front camera, Nokia emblem, microphone, speaker and color all are much to close to an N9 for it to be anything else.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

Give me that thing with a bit more RAM than the (original) N9, as well as a working port of Sailfish, and I'll buy ten to last a lifetime.

So now I am a bit confused; you say here that there are "android bits" underhood, yet I thought KaiOs is an own non-android OS implementatioin?

Either bionic or new drivers...

It is a closed fork of FirefoxOS, which worked with Android drivers. They didn't employ libhybris, but the trick was to compile Gecko for bionic instead.

Honestly, having KaiOS version of Nokia N9 would seem as disgrace of original N9 to me. If current KaiOS phones are anything to look at, it might have even lower specs than original (Nokia 8810 4G has 512 MB RAM), so coupled with closed bootloader it probably wouldn't make a nice device for porting. And as for KaiOS itself... they started based on open source project and made it completely closed source except the parts they had to open by license (Gecko engine), then turned to Google.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

I saw nokia 8110 4g recently.
Not very good UI,no terminal, maybe no openmode...
I don't think it is like a modern OS.
(Maybe it's because it has't a touching screen?)
I think I won't like it.
Maybe I will think about it if it has MUCH BETTER hardware and terminal and openmode or open bootloader :)

Nice and promising. Few days ago I bought brand new yellow 8110 4G for 50 EUR. As a second summer device, just for fun and a little tweaking. Love my N9, but it's totally abandoned...

Are you sure? It would be interesting if B2G was still getting commits as recent as 2 years ago, given that Mozilla cancelled the project over 3 years ago.

Re: Nokia N9 KaiOs (Would it be go or not?)

No. Meego might be dead, but KaiOS is silly underdeveloped. There's tons of bumps that I don't think should be in a release product, and on top of that it hopelessly lacks apps. There's twitter, a weather app, and supposedly a facebook and whatsapp, but except for that I haven't seen anyone develop for it. Personally I'd rather see work done on a Sailfish 3 for the Nokia N9.
