Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
On good suggestion by Kinggo...
Here is a thread devoted to our loyal companions who sit by us while we putter and fiddle away on our devices... Since this is in off topic... If we do not write here periodically.... The thread will disappear. Post your fav pics of your bestie beasties... Or ones you have run into... :) https://i.postimg.cc/s2rtFppK/photo5...8093159541.jpg |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
oh man...... where do I start?
How about my most loved one (that's not true probably but.....) http://oi49.tinypic.com/9gwkcx.jpg MC female as a baby some 10 years ago http://i50.tinypic.com/33jojkw.jpg http://oi49.tinypic.com/4qpeol.jpg I had to put her down last spring because of the brain tumor :( |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Beautiful calico ...
Yeah.. I feel you .... loud and clear It never gets easier ... No matter how old we get... Or how many friends we have to help pass more gently from this life. But better to live with that grief that never goes away... No matter how many pass either... Than never have them beside us to begin with. All my old companions ... It is painful enough knowing they are gone. I just try to remember the best of times with them. |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
I always get a new one soon after. I mean, life goes on and it easier for me and better for the little one. Or a big one in this case since I got another MC, this time male.

Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Nice pictures.
Haha ...yeah...the more time around people ...the more individual companions become ... Read a great deal about that... Many think ot is our individual souls...that rub off on animals that spend time with us more... And they gain more of their own "person" ...to their own souls...and less collective or herd personality or soul. I gre up with animals my whole life ... Living on a farm... I saw it all... And I believe it. |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Maemeowians?
|
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
|
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Maemeowians would be a sub category pertaining to meowsers...I would imagine...
(It is good though...) This halloween I may get the food colouring out and do my cat in Maemo colours and logo... turn him into an official Maemeowian for the festive night. Since Eddie lost his front left leg and right eye... I have an eye patch, a buccaneers hat...a plushy parrot to hide on his back ...and a fabric "wooden peg leg" for him... He does look dashing in it. Almost as good as Barkcula with his little purple bat ears and bat wings... But he has been Barkcula a few years running now...Got pictures of him in his Barkcula outfit...He loved it ....the ham... I will have to dig them up. |

Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
It isn't easy is it?
Yeah... About 4 ..5...years ago... I lost 3 great cats in two years... The first to old age...he was a great cat ...18 years old... Fit ...up to the end.. And the other two to FIV .. They were in their prime too.. It was a very hard couple of years there. I can't recall well... I have almost a million books, texts and manuscripts I have collected over the decades... All inevitably converted to e formats..(I could only keep hard editions of my favourites ...it became too much when I ended up having a library that encompansed most of the house...thank god for tech in that respect...it allowed me to keep my books...and have copies of others I had read and loaned out and never gotten back...or lost...or downsized ...and then regretted ...) But I think it was Madame Blavatsky ... (Who amongst others during that time period were of interest to me...and whose writings stick in my head...) But if memory serves... There is one thing that still holds me above all her esoteric philo and theo ... And it was her quoted questioning, on her own deathbed... Questioning "why must the innocent unknowing animals suffer?" That always stuck with me... Displaying an unheard of selflessness whilst dying.. Being more concerned and more intent on the welfare of others...especially those who cannot rationally reason their own mortality ..... |

Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Darn cute...
I have a few pictures I will dig out of storage over the next few days of the ptevious 3 cats I had that passed away inside of those 2 years... As well as a chiclid that lived for 15 years.... I named him" Giacomo the Incomparable" (Definitely lived up to that name) And "Privet" the pygmy hedgehog .. Before that...there was 10 ..almost 15 years where I just couldn't have a companion... After the death (,by old age at 18 years old) of my German Shepherd She was great... I grew up with her I wished she could have lived forever... But it isn't fair to keep here... anyone who has grown tired and weary of this world I took her death pretty hard... Hers and my very first dogs death ...when I was a youngster .. Them...well they predated digital... I have hard copy pictures of them packed away... The animals on the farm...even though I wasn't on bestest friend terms wiith them all...like my dogs and cats...were each and every one unique and have a place in my chest cavity ...(I'd say "a place in my heart.." but ...the heart is such a small organ ...and considering the full feeling of great companions...I think the feeling of the space they take up ...is more akin to the entire chest cavity anyway...:D) |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
now something different......
they tend to come from time to time during summer evenings, they like cat food. Sometimes I hear them then catch them for a few pictures. http://i43.tinypic.com/3148ch3.jpg http://i40.tinypic.com/10rshms.jpg and my friends pets......rats http://i45.tinypic.com/1onerp.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/9urf38.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/14wx3ph.jpg and there's the cat :D http://i49.tinypic.com/34hvq1k.jpg |

Smokey the cat, taken with my beloved old N900 back in the day. Nine years on and he's still with us today. He'd used at least one of his lives earlier the year that photo was taken when his bladder exploded while being boarded at the vet while the family was cruising incommunicado in the Caribbean. Before that I didn't know that there were people who specialize in veterinary urological surgery. |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
ach...yeah...
urinary tract issues are the Achilles heel of cats sadly.. Glad he is doing well though... Unfortunately as well...when boarding pets... there is usually many other animals present as well.. that puts a lot of distress on an animal... Visiting a vet at any time ...also puts a lot of stress on an animal.. Especially for a cat...to be taken from its environment ..since cats are territorial...is also a lot of stress on a cat. And lastly...how much free open space to do what cats do ...and how much attention was paid to Smokey's care so his bladder wouldn't explode ...is also an issue. It is a very concerning thing that last one... either he did not feel safe enough in an environment that was frightening for him.. or his care was negligent. If ever I go anywhere ...ever...and must leave the house for extended periods ....which is rare...since I have no desire to travel away from paradise... I make sure that either a friend comes over to watch over the boys...or at worst a local pet sitter comes by to feed, walk and take care of their needs twice a day...since the cost of that personal care is cheaper, less traumatic and safer than boarding them. |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Very nice one you got there.

I still had to feed her with the bottle for the next few weeks. http://i64.tinypic.com/2s81h13.jpg http://i63.tinypic.com/20aqdzb.jpg |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Ah Kinggo ..
Excellent pics ...excellent models for your pics...never met a cat or dog or any other companion that wasn't photogenic and a camera hog to boot... :) Definitely you are hitting one of the 3 primary duties we have ( Really the only duties we have...) as a species. - helping to care for other species that share this place with us. Incredibly important . * (* the other 2 being caring for this place, and one another) I cannot say enough good, nor speak highly enough of you ...considering. |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
well, I have a very very soft spot for cats. Of all sizes.
|
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
In my native language the slang word for "cat" is also a slang word for "girl", especially an attractive one. A bit like the word "bird" is being used in English.
Reading your post in light of that information puts an interesting slant on it :D |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
The same here. So yeah...... I get what you mean. And when it comes to those cats.....
|
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
Well...you gents have quite the sexy name for the ladies then...I am envious.
How is it spelt.. I am always keen on expanding my language skills. I know a smattering of about 8 languages ... (though my Latin and Spanish and French are better than a smattering) |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
well, cat is mačka(F)/mačak(M) in croatian. Now, a comprehensive list of all the words we use to name a woman would be quite long and without proper explanation when and how to use what would make no sense. But mačka is kinda old fashioned term that you'll hardly hear nowdays. Most common term would probably be komad (literary "piece") or treba or if she's young then mala (little one).
Then, there are some vulgar terms that does not need to be that if used properly. As an example, see this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P-_8jHUKSI Our language is very colorfull when it comes to cursing and stuff :D |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
The Slovak word for "cat" is also "mačka" ('MUCH-ka' for the English speakers) and is also a feminine, very much like in Croatian. A male cat is "kocúr" ('KO-tsoor').
But the slang word is "kočka" ('KOTCH-ka'), which is also a slang word for a girl, especially an attractive one. As in, "See that girl over there? She is a kočka, isn't she?" (You cannot say that in English, you would be immediately burned alive for sexism or some cr@p like that, but in Slovak this is considered a compliment.) I believe in Czech, which is a language almost, but not entirely, unlike Slovak, "kočka" is the proper, non-slang word for "cat". |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
In finnish "cat" is "kissa" and indeed it is used as a slang word for an attractive/sexy woman.
Additionally an older girl could be described as "puuma" :D |
Re: Maemalians : Friends of Maemo
funny that isn't it?
There are SOOOOO many slang terms for females that involve cats...across multiple languages... English is chock full. Well it is fitting that food and women should have descriptive and colourful words for them. As far as what is current and transitory social graces and norms and what is acceptable... that is always in flux...always changing. Hopefully the current madness of extremism will abate soon enough..... otherwise language would be that much grey and dull without such ...colourful and expressive terminology... |
