The new and improved final countdown

I cannot believe that years and years of good dialogue were just flushed away with the old final countdown...

So to commemorate the new one...
Lift a glass to Dave...(He liked a good beer)

And as far as finality in countdowns go...
Lets pour another for Rutger Hauer...
A great talent...
and a great person.
Rest in peace .

I did not know that Rutger Hauer passed. :(

He was one of those actors like Christopher Walken. If you imagine role to be played by someone like Rutger Hauer, your only choice is Rutger Hauer.

Re: The new and improved final countdown

I know ...eh?
he was a damn good actor.
I have pretty much all he has done.
right down to the episodes he starred in...in Lexx
Every time he is in something, he does the part justice.
He has no need to be an alpha on the screen, his presence and disposition fill the screen plenty without demanding it.
I've seen some interviews and such of him as well..
and he is just a great, kind, intelligent and thoughtful person.
Liked him a lot.
Rutger, like so many of the old school, are just downright good actors.
I intend on having a binge watch of Rutger movies shortly.
Currently I am binge watching everything by Michael Caine.
(Always enjoy "get Carter" ..gritty film)
Once done, I will sit with Rutger.
My film vault is extensive.
Name the actor and I have a section with his/her films ...most likely.
(every time I visit those films I get drawn afterwards to watch one of the supporting actors swathe of films ...so it is a never ending cycle of good films for me)

And now, to settle in...
and..
as the great Canadian professor of film and media would show, for decades (on our version of PBS), before the saturday night film started...
time to start the projector, which casts magic shadows on the wall...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFYYj4NQyoM

ah ..
good old times ...grew up on actual informative, educational, enlightening and entertaining television...
Some innocent retro ...for everyone.

I cannot help but think of this classic:

Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwarz, and Lucille LeSueur

definitely ...
Walken is great ....ain't he now?

Loved him in Brainstorm...
He played opposite Natalie Wood ...it was her last role if memory serves...before her tragic death from drowning ..

Re: The new and improved final countdown

Not a countdown but I'd like to share it anyway as a reminder of the difference between the British and European way of seeing the world. (Before that reminder, another reminder: I live in the UK but was born and raised elsewhere and I observe the difference daily and it frustrates me to no end.)

I was doing a European driving trip with three kids and was cut off from the news for a week which was quite refreshing, but as I left the kids with my family and set off on my long solo drive back home, I switched on the radio to keep me awake. It was some local station: no big talks; only music, commercials and a short news bulletin once an hour.

It was on one of those news bulletins when I heard about an overflowing dam at Whaley Bridge near Manchester, UK. The whole bulletin took altogether maybe 2 minutes and yet they managed to find a few seconds to squeeze some local news from some obscure country at the back of beyond. Not even a major news like some terrorist attack, a big natural disaster or an important political event. Just some local news.

Our European readers will probably wonder, "so what?". They are used to European media mentioning curiosities from other countries. It's part of normal, day-to-day life. But as someone living in the UK for 20+ years, who got used to how self-obsessed the country is and how non-existent news coverage from other parts of the world is there, this was a major "wow!" moment.

No wonder that a country so isolated from the outside world can acquire a rather twisted image of itself.

Interesting that news stuff. In Finland it seems there are as many news from other countries as there are from Finland. Small low esteem country so wanting to know what they do in the big world. But this I have really liked in Finland school system: english teaching started when 10 years old, swedish when about 13 (or you can choose which starts first. German (or french or russia and in some spanish) at the age of 15. Geography teaching around the world as well as history and religions. The basics which law requires you to learn really give a good view of what is and where. And you can quite well trust the news (even though they are western news so there should be a proper channel for the other sides point of views) and you do not need to be afraid of the cops and law. And I like the gun policy.

But I can share a secret: finnish people have deep in their heart that they are the purest and noblest country and people in the world. They just do not say it aloud, many not even to themselves. It is not because they would be so humble or not sure of it really. It is just like a secret not yet to be revealed to the world. Like hidden from the evil. Maybe I should not have said it aloud. Hope I didn't spoil anything.

Wow....

Sorry man..
I beg to differ.

And here I thought it was just us Canadians who were quiet about it...

Canadians also secretly think that Finland is the best country in the world? :D

Re: The new and improved final countdown

Hurt my back 5 work yesterday. Last night our last windows machine which have been on online use started have a hickup. Had Avast and freedome VPN. Took them away, installed Kaspersky, installed advanced systemcare and have been playing with that cleaning and updating drivers and defragmenting. Now used windows own tools to check and from mozilla files it found some bad clusters (the net have been a problem). Next gonna put down again all unneccessary services which I had enabled to get VPN working and gonna take off from internet the machine. Got yesterday from a work mate a T61 laptop and installed today Mint 19 64bit. Have only 3GB ram (if you have two spare 4Gb ddr2 rams you can throw them this direction cause it supports 8Gb) but it is enough for online use. Now installing Mint 19 32bit on my compaq 110 mini. Ubuntu Mate gave errors all the time and vanished the Drive letter from usb sticks so that windows wont recognize them. Have to find the solution to fix again (something like from the disk management in windows to rename/label the drive).

Re: The new and improved final countdown

have you thought of a distro aimed at machines with older hardware and / or lower specs?

Lubuntu and lxle ...if you like familiarity with the popular distros..
Those two are good on older machines and machines that need to run leaner.
Decent compat as well.

My personal fav in the arena of ready to load distros is antix ...
It'll run on a bloody toaster from 1953 ...
it is a great distro ...
and perfect for older hardware...and limited specs compared to the expectations of today.

Re: The new and improved final countdown

as far as a first countup...
Prob is ....where to start...
and once you pick some ...random number or thing to start from...
you will hit that "wall" of finality when you hit day zero.

A Countdown can always be left open ended ...and last a decade or more...
So the quantum mechanics of Dave's final countdown proved...

Also there is the conundrum of the countdown and countup conflicting
It could very well negate TMO
and possibly extend further and pop creation as we know it.

You and I must have very, very, very different ideas of what a countdown means.

To me, a countdown is to a specific event. Once that event is reached, that's it. The end. No more countdown.
A countup, on the other hand, is open-ended by definition.

Re: The new and improved final countdown

what about the doomsday clock?
Eh?
there is a precedent for you.
it has been stalled, repealed, multiple times.
A countdown is one thing...and there is no definitive tick tock necessary...
a count up ...in my opinion ...has less wiggle room ..

That reminds me of something :D (With apologies to non-UK readers to whom it probably does not mean much.)

But that's the whole point! A countdown has to be stalled, repealed, reset, etc to make any adjustments. One can even argue that if you can do that to a countdown then it was not a very good countdown to start with, like the link above.

A count-up, on the other hand, does not need tweaking. It is open-ended by definition.

Re: The new and improved final countdown

Hi Guys! Hope you have it as top notch as you can! Let’s straight this out one once and for all. A countdown is a countup and countup is obviously a countdown. Let’s play it out. At first there was nothing. Possibly only some aliens. Or was it? Before nothing there was a countdown of some sort in a place. Then something appeared for billion of years. Yes. I’m talking bout universe, time and space. A countdown until some us hit year zero. Suddenly the countdown becomes a countup but at the same time it’s the same countdown as before year zero so time of countdown as a count up of the universe as always going on. Until the end.

A countdown never stops. it’s just you stopping it or forever to continue. Can’t blame the countdown for that. Pretty obvious. It never stops. NEVER!

OMG! I just saw Dave999's post! Howdy!

Btw, if the universe has periodic boundary conditions does the count down eventually get you back to where you started. You could even pass a count up along the way!

Very good! I was thinking along the lines of already having counted down a bit and wanting to count back up to the beginning. Perhaps a stretch...
