Reading CompactFlash cards on N800?

I just purchased an N800 for use on a bicycle tour. I also have an old Canon G3 camera, which uses CompactFlash cards. I have a card reader for this that works via standard USB. I am wondering what the current state of the art is with the N800 in terms of being able to get files off that CompactFlash card and onto the N800. Does anybody have any experience of this, or pointers to resources? I found this link which seems to talk about an N800 multi-card reader, but I'm not sure I believe it:

http://www.mobilizenow.com/catalog/N...ons_752280.htm

It seems to be just the trick, but when you do searches for the part number (USB-1710) it appears to be just another standard USB card reader. I know the N800 has a mini-USB slot, and I'm also aware that there have been issues with USB on the N800 in the past... is this still the case?

Or do I need to get a different camera, one that uses SD cards?

Thanks,

/Neil

I can quite confidently say that that particular card reader will not work with a N800[*]. However, I believe CF-to-SD adapters do exist, so maybe you don't need a new camera after all.

(searching -- searching --)

Ah! got one: http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/eagl...adapter_review

[*] For various versions of "not", that is. If you're prepared to do some complicated tinkering, and manage to get alpha-quality sofware running (that hasn't been all that successful sofar), it might just be possible to get that thing sorta working. However, don't ask me; be prepared for a long and complicated search on the interwebs.

That device, as someone else has mentioned, is for reading SD cards on a CompactFlash slot. I need to be able to read the CompactFlash on the N800.

I know, but with this adapter he can use SD cards in his CF camera and still use them in the N800.

It beats buying a new camera. No?

Ahh, I see what you mean. Interesting! Thanks.

Has anyone tried use a powered USB adapter cable with a USB card reader?

I thought I read in one of the forums (can't remember which one) that you could get the N800 to recognize a external HD by this method, so a USB card reader should work to.

See link for how to make a powered USB adapter cable.

If you search the forums, you should find alternate methods too.

Seems easy enough to try.

I have one of those SD-in-CF adapter, and I just have to warn you that it doesn't work with SDHC cards. For non-SDHC cards (there are non-standard 2 and 4GB cards), it works a treat though.

Tested on Nikon D70x.

Good to know - I got an 8 GB Kingston SDHC for my new N800. What do you mean by "there are non-standard 2 and 4GB cards"? I thought 2 GB was very safe and standard non-SDHC? I have never used this format so I don't really know what I'm talking about... are there different varieties of 2 GB SD? What's the biggest size that would work ok with both the adapter and the N800?

I just ordered an adapter from ebay, which was about the only supplier I could find:

Thanks again,

Re: Reading CompactFlash cards on N800?

Oops, I meant non-standard 4GB SD card.

Transcend makes a non-SDHC 4GB that works on non-SDHC compatible devices:
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-TS4G.../dp/B000BR3OHI

I will have to retest the 4GB Transcend on the camera if you're interested in that, I'm a bit fuzzy on my memory. I'm sure 1GB and 2GB cards worked fine though. The 2GB Transcend has a yellow label just like their non-SDHC 4GB card... so that threw me off.

For sure the adapter doesn't work with 4GB SDHC and 8GB SDHC cards that I have though (Kingston, Toshiba, A-Data).

I guess there is plenty of confusion to go around. I have one of these little adaptors to allow me to read 2GB SD cards in my Zaurus (which is limited to 1GB in size for the SD slot, but can read larger cards in the CF slot).

I suspect it will not work for SDHC (read: 4GB and above) cards. But hey, you can pick up 2GB SD cards for a song now, that everyone wants the bigger cards.

I'll try my SD in CF adaptor with my 8GB SDHC card tonight and let you know how it goes.

By the way, is my new 8 GB SDHC card going to be safe from corruption in my new N800, or is that issue still out there?

Thanks again!

There's just been a new firmware update for the N800 which deals with that issue. Install the new firmware first and (hopefully) there shouldn't be any problems with your SDHC card:

Just to give you the result: Doesn't work :(

On my SD to CF adaptor, anyway, SDHC cards don't appear to work.
