If you go into the trouble of importing stuff from the US, as I sometimes do, you will realise that after freight and taxes, you will come quite close to 1 dollar = 1 Euro. That is what the manufacturers know.


Still, the question is about price drop in Europe. In case nobody noticed yet, the iPod touch is not yet available in Europe (it is delayed), and its price is €299 (€399 for the 16 GB model), NOT $500 as was written earlier in this thread. My bet is that the N800 price will drop to under €300 within one or two weeks (maybe not at Nokia's shop, but certainly on the web), that is when the iPod touch will be available in Europe.

As I said before, the manufacturer is already importing all of them from Korea (or, in case of other items, China, Bangladesh, Malaysia, etc.), so the freight and taxes are comparable.
The price difference is just trying to squeeze europeans more than they squeeze north americans. The sad thing is we collectively allow them to do that.

Huh. Amazon told me I can't get the post-order price guarantee (I ordered one a week ago, for my wife) because they don't directly sell the N800. They are just a front end for Tiger Direct on it.

Tiger Direct doesn't have a post-order price guarantee.

My n800 writes "Made in Finland". But that's not the point. What I find unacceptable is the fact that the price in Europe is more than double of that in the US. The best price at the moment in Europe is 330 euros and in the States 158 euros!!!

I wanted to buy one as a present to good friend, but now I'm convinced that I should give my money to someone that gives me more respect.

though it is a little suprizing to me that this has happened, one thing most people don't notice is that after the mfg drops support for a device (especially a good one) the linux community revives it. It has happened with the PlayStation 2 (and 3) and XBox in the past and the Nokia 770 as of late. Of course, it will happen with the N800 as well. But whether that happens or not, there is another really nice course of actions going down in the near future, as stated in this article: [ http://news.softpedia.com/news/Mozil...ce-67699.shtml ] that will revolutionize the industry in many ways. Luckily, the lifespan of devices in the Linux community are much longer than that of mainstream earth (I avoided naming a country or continent for a reason... :P )

I just enjoy sitting back and watching most of it happen... of course I get my hands dirty here and there, but we all do at some point.

I couldn't agree more! Nokia's policies here are really ruthless. Someone should tell them that it is espicially that kind of behaviour which gives companies a microsoft-like reputation.
