Compatible to EU WiFis and PCs ?

Hello,

Because of the huge price gap I consider ordering the N800 in the US but I wonder if it will connect to German computers and German Wireless LANs.

I heard that it only supports the Wifi channels 1 to 11, is that correct? Wouldn't be good since we use 12 and 13 here as well.

I have used it many times in Germany, in homes, hotels and in a park with no problem at all. :)

OK thanks for telling me that :)

Does someone know if the following could be a problem ?

One hardware, one software... I'm pretty sure the WiFi channel limits are determined by your config, e.g. region/language.

I can not say yes or no to that question, but one could assume that Nokia designed the N800 for world use not for a certain region of the world. Once again I saw many many wifi spots (95% of them lock-down :) ) while walking around in Germany. Do you have a router on channel 12 or 13 if so you change the channel.

Well I also want to log into WiFis where I cannot configure the router.

Let me ask differently: Is it true, that US Wireless LANs only support the channels 1-11 ? Maybe you can check your router configurations :)

Thanks,

Phil

I use a us-tablet in germany and first could not connect to my ap because it was set to a radio channel that is not allowed in the states. I opened a thread which was called "wifi channels problem" to address exactly your problem. unfortunately neither the support nor any guys on the forum could help me so far. in the end I just changed the ap channel.

Re: Compatible to EU WiFis and PCs ?

Hello Kalle,

Well then it is true :(
I guess I have to wait and hope that the price for the N800 will drop in a while. Although 350€ are within my budget I am just not willing to pay so much if the tablet costs only 232$ in the USA.

Do you anyway have an idea what exactly prevents your US tablet from connecting to European chan. 12 or 13 WiFis ? Is it a software or hardware problem?
Wouldn't it be possible to simply "Format C" and install a German OS on it ? I cannot really imagine that it is the hardware which does not permit the US tablet to connect to chan 12 or 13 WiFis.

Hmmm I never came across a chan 12 or chan 13 WiFi network myself...

From the 802.11 wiki...

Quote:

The channels that are available for use in a particular country differ according to the regulations of that country. In the United States, for example, FCC regulations only allow channels 1 through 11 to be used. In Europe channels 1–13 are licensed for 802.11b operation (with 1, 5, 9 and 13 usually deployed). In Japan, all 14 channels are licensed for 802.11b operation.
My UK N800 scans 13 channels according to dmesg...

Some people have modified firmwares on PC cards to let them have the 14 channels... I wonder if we have a firmware/assembly guru in here ;)
