So I just get n800 today :) And as you see, I'm happy)

But I understand that I need to update operating system and install many programs :)

So it wold be nice to have answer to next questions ():
1. How can I update OS, what version? And do I really need to do it? I have 2007 (and if I install new one, do I loose everything that was on PDA before? Actually now it is pure, so better to to it in next days)
2. What is a good browser?
3. what is the good task/schedule planner?
4. Is there is any java support? As I understand still no java :(
5. I'm going to buy 2-4 Gb card, so what is better? :) SD/MMC? Half will be used for music.

1. Go to the Nokia site and its as simple as plug it in and follow directions
2. Micro B. Thats what I use exclusively. I does have bugs but it is beta.
3. GPE is what I use but has bugs too. The alarm doesn't always work.
4. Javascript works for the sites that need it but no not Java.
5. 2gig are $17 at Radio Shack. I think over 2 gig you have to a sdhc card or something like that.

It's best to update the firmware (os) when you first buy it, so that you don't lose any installed programs. However, you do NOT lose everything if you update the OS because you can back up all your personal data onto a memory card, then restore it after the update.

The built-in one, Opera, is actually pretty darn good. It's a proper finished version rather than a beta, so it's not full of bugs. The one problem with Opera is that a small number of sites (Google Documents for example) won't work because the people that run the sites won't support Opera due to its small market share.

The main alternative is MicroB, which is based on Mozilla, the same thing used by Firefox. Because Mozilla/Firefox has a much larger market share, almost all sites support them, so MicroB is compatible with the sites that won't run on Opera. However, MicroB is still in its development stage so it's got far more bugs than Opera.

There are several calendars available for the N800, try downloading them for yourself and see how you like them.

The N800 can only use software labelled OS2007, and it's easiest to install the software that has a green install arrow next to it.

The software's all free and open source.


There's Javascript support, which is what most websites use for special effects. For example here's a video of the game Lemmings written entirely in Javascript, which is running through the N800's browser:

Javascript also works fine on (for example) Gmail and Google Maps.

Actual Java isn't supported, but Java is a bit rarer on the internet, it's usually used for complete programs rather than elements of websites.

It's worth saying that the N800 supports Flash, which is something that most PDAs can't do. Not even the iPhone supports Flash.


You can use two memory cards at once on the N800, so you can use any combination of cards you want.

The N800 can officially use SDHC cards up to 8 gigabytes in size, but ordinary SD cards are only officially supported up to 2 gigabytes.

Congrats. Some people may say this isn't a PDA but they're splitting hairs. :-)

The N800 is a pocket computer, you can make it whatever you want it to be by installing the right software.

SD is faster than standard MMC (by a large margin), unless the MMC is MMCPlus. The latter will only be fast if you upgrade to the latest firmware, which is also what you want for getting (reliable) SDHC support.

4gig SD cards work fine, in my experience. I picked up two 8gig SDHC cards as soon as they were officially supported, though.

I instaling some applications, and one said that it is required phyton 2.5
I try to search the maemo website, but it find nothing, then I go to AppManager, and it find phyton, but again it require some libs..

where can I get them?

another one question:

I have miranda(icq, msn, irc, jabber) at home. And I want to chat also at n800... what options I have?

1. have 2 different accounts for each protocol.
2. when at home/study switch of gaim at n800, and run messenger at desctop pc
3. have some messanger at home pc, and with n800 connect to it as a proxy
4. anything else?

Make sure that your reposittoriies are set up right in the app manager. Those files should be listed in the app manager. if required. Also I found if I searched here and found the list of repo's and enter them, things get easy as far as finding files.

I read lots of reviews on sites like Amazon.com and Buy.com before pulling the trigger to purchase. My N800 has not arrived (maybe Friday?) but one statement in many of the messages stood out. It was that everyone should update to the newest firmware first thing.

Do you find this to be true? Any precaution I should take? I've already downloaded (but have not installed) "Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard.exe" to be ready. Along with this site, the tutorials on Internet Tablet School have been great to watch to get an idea of what to expect and what to do.

This you should do. The latest firmware fixes a problem affecting certain SD cards, in particular the newer SDHC types. Also, unless the N800 you get has the next-to-last firmware already you'll miss out on a much better touch screen sensitivity and also the possibility to use Skype.

Don't know, but the workaround is that both of you have gmail/google talk accounts and you can do the chat there while you talk through Skype ;)

Also, regarding the memory cards, you're best off buying a MicroSD that comes with the adapters to MiniSD and regular SD. That way you're covered in the case that they move to a smaller format in the future. Just use whatever adapter is appropriate for the device. The MicroSD's aren't too much more expensive, and I think it'd be worth it.
