EVDO tends to only be used in upgrades to CDMA networks, which pretty much means just in America.

Yeah, but right now the choices for mobile data in the US are:

1) T-Mobile (cheapest unlimited data plan ... but GRPS, not EDGE)
2) AT&T (3G, but expensive unlimited data plan, unless you've got an iPhone ... but the iPhone isn't 3G)
3) Verizon (crappy service all around, CDMA/EVDO, I don't think I could find/understand their data rate tiers, I remember eliminating them as a potential carrier pretty quickly)
4) Sprint (medium-expensive unlimited data plan, but from what I've seen, the fastest data rates ... CDMA/EVDO)

So, while CDMA/EVDO might be "America only", it's probably the best choice for combination of speed and expense, if you go with Sprint, when you're a USA customer. That makes it a hard one to pass up.

Though, since such a device probably wouldn't be ready until next year, or later, anyway (if they started working on it today), then Sprint's WiMAX should be out by the time it's ready ... so it might make the most sense to skip EVDO for that reason (GSM version for AT&T/T-Mobile/International, WiMAX for Sprint in the USA, and forget about Verizon's CDMA network).
