Probably just a play.com issue. I think price fixing is illegal.

Yes, it's illegal under EU rules.

But I notice that the price of Ninentdo DS LItes is pretty much the same wherever you go. The only difference is with the bundled add-ons. The Apple iPod touch is priced the same wherever you go.

Compare that to the N800 in the UK. Lowest price: £150. Highest price: £279. It's just crazy. Needless to say, some of the lower-priced retailers are a little dodgy, but we're forced to use them because of Nokia's screwball retail chain.

Nokia's a large multinational company. We shouldn't have to go through this to buy their stuff.

Re: UK price hits £149

Well, If some orders were complited, we should soon hear wow's from happy customers. All I want to know is should I order a n800 from play.com. If they realy play with customers like that, I don't want to take part in their games. All I want is a new n800 as cheap as possible. :D

Has anybody's arrived yet? Mine hasn't.

Mine still says 'Order taken' when I check. I can still cancel the order too... so.. no, nothing... :( :(

I happen to have been very jammy, was looking to buy from Play but had got fed up waiting... then my brother discovered that a trusted friend in california was coming to England, and Amazon.com were happy to take my UK credit card but have the item delivered to Calif... bought two for US$260 all inclusive.

Re: UK price hits £149

Good result! :) Play.com still says 'Order Taken'.... :(

Re: UK price hits £149

My guess is that Play are waiting for the official OS2008 release, which could be weeks away. I cancelled my order yesterday and ordered one from expansys, it arrived this morning :) Although it was 40 quid more expensive :(

TheJoker 2007-11-29 14:51

Re: UK price hits £149

IanH, IMO £40 is a low price to pay for not being yanked around. I'd do the same if I wouldn't have found an N800 already (the one from Play.com is now for my friend). Play.com still says 'Order Taken'. :(

rs-px 2007-11-30 10:06

Re: UK price hits £149

Continued looking for cheap prices so I can tell Play.com where to go... Haven't succeeded.

Some company called inkino.co.uk offer an N800 for £184.95, but they also add-in a whopping £9 delivery charge, making for £195 in total. Add-in the fact their website seems to have been created with the Fisher Price My-First-E-Commerce-Kit (always wary of online shops whose sites don't display properly -- it's a bit like walking into a real shop that's got shelves falling off), and I'd give this one a wide berth.

So I'm back to waiting for PlayAroundWithYourCustomers.com :(

Add in the rather high £7 P&P and it comes to just under £191.63. Because it's an established and reliable company, this is still the best bet if you don't want to wait for PlayAroundWithDeliveryDates.com :)

I ordered one from Play on Friday evening for £149. We'll see when it turns up. Having a look around some of the other stores, Nokia was on backorder, and pc world was out of stock as well. Could well be a general supply issue at the minute.

BTW Pc World has dropped it's price to £199 in the last 2 weeks.

Just continuing to have a browse to see what the chatter is on other sites about Play, and found this link http://www.handtec.co.uk/section.php/159/1/nokia where an 800 is £170 + about £6 next day delivery which is fairly reasonable.

Like I said a long time ago in this thread, my bet is that these items will turn-up with OS2008 preinstalled on them (currently N800s come with OS2007). In other words, these are new stock units and aren't the same-old N800s as you can buy elsewhere. This accounts for the price difference -- the new stock units are intended to be retailed around the £150 mark.

This is little comfort for those of us waiting impatiently for our N800s. Bearing in mind that OS2008 is still in beta, and has seemingly been delayed, I also think that we won't be getting the N800s before Xmas. :( I suspect Nokia is stringing along Play.com with various dates that it isn't entirely confident it will meet.

Other theory: Expansys shows that the N810 will be released on the 10th too. Again, the Play.com N800s are a new stock unit but won't be released until the N810 is.

I would go with that too.

Re: UK price hits £149

I hate to say I told you so but I said ages ago that Play.com are NOT covered by any UK Consumer law, including distance selling regulations as they are based in Jersey not UK. Therefore, so long as they don't take your money, I think it is unlikely you will get your N800.

I looked on handtec and it still mentions OS2007 not 2008...

As another point I ordered my 770 from Expansys and it arrived not only the next day, but also when I rang up and said there was no foreign adaptor they sent that out by courier without question the same day and it arrived the next day. That is excellent service!

Mine is back to 'Order taken' - I'm starting to get a feeling that the status is automatically changed to 'Order taken' on the day the order is expected to show up...

I feel sorry for the ones of you who are still waiting for yours (I got my hands on one several weeks back).

Cancelled order for N800 from PLAY.COM, what a bunch of conmen or conwomen.

Re: UK price hits £149

it may be worth persevering with play, because right now they are advtzng the 800 at the cheapest inc delivery! now, there is way to even get it down even cheaper. currently, over on a site called rpoints there is a voucher code for 10% off a £50 spend, which would bring it down to approx £135. and if you sign up with quidco another merchant cashback site and purchase thru the site you should get another 4% off. but when are they coming in stock?

We are writing to you in reference to your recent Nokia N800 Internet Tablet order.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen problems with the manufacturer we have been unable to secure our stock of the Nokia N800, for which we sincerely apologise. We expect to receive our stock allocation on Monday 17th December. When we receive our stock we will endeavor to process and post your order as quickly as possible to prevent any further delay. The item will be sent by parcelforce courier, and should be with you within 3 working days of posting, however this cannot be guaranteed due to possible complications with the postal system during the busy Christmas period.

Again we apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and valued custom.

Thanks for the pointer.

I also heard this lot have stock:

http://www.mobilebee.co.uk/?searchword=N800

But more interested in if the stock is "real" as in knowing someone that has actually recieved one from a UK supplier.

Happy to stick it out with Play at the minute.

good look and hope you enjoy yours. mine arrived via my brother (who in turn got it via his boss who came over from california!)...

my first impressions are that the N800 feels much more refined in the hand than the n770, but I wish it had the solid slip cover! I'm busy hacking my video transcoding script to play movies on the n800. lovely quality!

Ditto - and checking the site gives me a tracking number that was delivered on 4th September 2007 in Nottingham... I'm astonished but numbed by it all. I'll accept that I've got an N800 in my hand when I've opened the parcel and I've actually held the device! :D
