Those are the "Download terms"...

Maps for other regions are available through the Wayfinder Mobile store link provided you have net access. That net access if through a carriers wireless network may invoke access charges.

I don't have the new OS so I guess it's best if someone with it uses the "7 day trial" to give you the absolute answer you require.

What I do know is that Navicore running on OS2007 DOES NOT require net access for its navigation features.
The device only requires this access if I want to download maps for a country/region other than the entire USA and Canada. Those maps are pre-loaded on my device. The new maps can be pre-loaded as well using my home PC to download and transfer them elliminating any need for the device to connect to the net.

Traffic updates would be another matter but traffic information is not yet available in the US anyway.

I am shocked to read that after you purchase a N810, you have to pay for GPS service! Pay for what? You should already have the maps. There is no charge to use the satellites, you already payed for them with your taxes. If you buy a portable GPS for your car, there are no additional charges. I can't believe this. Now I'm happy to just keep my N800 and use my portable GPS unit when I need it.

I do not believe that you have to pay for any service to use the GPS, but I belive there is an additional fee for the application (MAPS). So I would assume maemo mapper will be available at some point, when they can convince gnuite to move up.

I agree wholeheartedly why give me hardware without software, especially for the price. Don't get me wrong, $479 is a good deal, if you have not already purchased an external GPS and keyboard and an 8GB SHDC SD card.

But if you have, the upgrade is much less desirable.

Archos pulls this same stuff.

The device has the mapping software loaded on. You get a free trial of the 'navigation features/POI', then they want you to give them another $130 to them to unlock it. Absolutely absurd.

If I am paying $200+ dollars more for basically the same unit, that is the cost of a full GPS kit from Navicore. Dont pull that crap about sliding keyboards, etc, because Nokia has saved the R&D cost by basically recycling most of the old unit (same processor, memory, screen, nearly same OS).

Nokia, if you are going to charge $480 for this thing, the GPS software NEEDS TO BE 100% FREE/INCLUDED. Otherwise charge $350 for it, and then the extra $130 you need wont be such a slap in the pants.


Here is an example:

1. Buy N810 with Wayfinder GPS kit. $480 + $130 = $610 not including taxes

2. Buy a N800, and a Tom Tom Go 720. $230 + $400 = $630 no tax (ebay/buy.com)

3. Buy N800 + Navkit. $230 + $200 = $430.


I dont see how in gods name the N810 can justify that ammount. I chose the Tom Tom 720 because its amazing. 4.3" screen, bluetooth, uses cell data for traffic/construction updates, hands free for the cell phone. Nice piece of kit!

N810 needs to cost $350 if the full map software is $130.

Does anyone know if the Maps (w/ or w/out navigation) will work on a N800 running OS2008 with an external GPS?

It should. However, I have not been able to pair my i-Blue GPS receiver with OS2008: It forces to enter passcode, and i-Blue does not support this feature... :(

are you sure it doesn't have a standard code (like 0000 or 1234)?

Color me confused. If I don't pony up the $130 what good is the internal N810 GPS? Wouldn't Google Maps serve me just as well? Is this a one-time price or a subscription racket? Is there an open-source alternative?

I've never used a GPS unit.
