Are you sure that you do not need the premium service to get directions with the built in maps program? It lets you search for a location but I cannot see any option to get directions to there.

So, we've discussed the basics of what features we must purchase the license to use, but this board seems to be missing a very important point. THERE IS NO SUPPORT FOR TRAFFIC OR CONSTRUCTION IN NORTH AMERICA, REGARDLESS OF WHAT SORT OF ACTIVE CONNECTIONS YOU HAVE AVAILABLE. This means when the State Police close the interstate for 2 hours for an accident requiring a life-flight helicopter, the GPS will drive you right into the closure. Likewise, the GPS will direct you drive over bridges that are out of service for extended (18 month +) refurbishing or reconfiguring. Such limitations have cost me significant time, either stuck in avoidable traffic or blindly following lengthy detours, on several occaissions.

Does anyone know if it is possible to subscribe to Telenav, or a similar service, with the N810? The extra money would be worth it to me in order to have a device which will actually give me the best route.

Thanks.

From what I've heard and read about the GPS capabilities of this device, I'd say if its that important to you that you have a real-time subscription service because not having it causes you to waste time, its probably best to just pony up for a real Garmin navigator that lets you do all the fancy and subscription-based stuff. The 810 has no provisions for that kind of stuff, and its functionality is basic and a bit buggy at best.

I'm a little surprised that it's been over a year since this discussion was started and nothing but the price of the n810 has changed. I wish I knew how to program, I would start a open source navigation project. Why not? Or help add 3d and voice to Maemo-mapper. Or at least beg maemo-mapper to be able to plan routes without the internet. Any of these would be a substantial breakthrough to the GPS capabilities of the n810 and no one seems to want to compete with proprietary locked Navicore on a device running everything else open source. Weird. Okay I'm done with my rant now. Thank you.

Route planning is quite hard, some of us were talking about adding this functionality to Maemo-mapper at the last summit, but life and work got in the way in the meantime. Anyway Navit should be able to do off-line routing, using OSM data.

Why not learn to program and use this as your driving force?

I have the Telenav receiver from way back in my Treo 700 days, and wanted to know if I can use it as an external GPS receiver for n810/maemo mapper?

thanks
