Accessing files wirelessly and memory questions

I am still learning at what I can and cannot do and how to do it. Please bear with me. I do have 3 questions that I haven't been able to find the answers to so far.

1. Is there a way to or program that allows me to access my media files wirelessly through my home WiFi network?

2. When installing apps, programs or games... does it use the built in internal memory? Or can you use the removeable internal memory?

3. How exactly do you put it in Standby mode?

Re: Accessing files wirelessly and memory questions

1. You will be able to share files with Windows/Linux over Samba when the new OS comes out. Right now, I don't personally know if there is any port of Samba. Check maemo.org.

2. It uses the internal memory. The only way around this is to clone your operating system to the SD card and boot off the card. The process is outlined in [1] (caveat: the term "MMC" is a hangover from the days of the Nokia 770, so please interpret it as meaning "SD" for the N800).

3. One way would be to click the power button and select "Lock Touchscreen and Keys". For another way and further information, see [2].

You could install openssh server on your device and could then transfer files to and from the device with sftp. For example I'm using KDE on my desktop machine, so I can just type in sftp://user@192.168.1.102 in Konqueror, and I'll get to my files. I think the device had no password for the user account by default, so you might need to set it with the passwd command in xterm first. openssh I think is available from the extras repo.

To get stuff off your windows network, there's a wiki entry over at maemo.org if I'm not mistaken. The instructions are full of syntax errors, but I don't have the proper form handy at the moment.

Anyway, when you find the proper page, it will tell you:
download cifs.ko to your n800.
install xterm
acquire root access
use insmod to insert CIFS
type in a slightly complicated mount command to mount the CIFS (windows) share directory.

The last two steps are where the syntax errors are. If all works well, you should get no messages, and everything should be jake.

Or you can wait till mid-november when they update the OS

Thanks all for the info. Seems complicated to transfer files wirelessly to and from your PC to the N800. Looks like I'll wait till the new 2008 Firmware... as right now it is too complicated for me to even try.

It is much much easier with my Archos 605 to do this.

You may want to check out the "Media Streamer" application. It can stream from UPnP sources like WMP11, TwonkyVision, Tversity, etc.

I have bt usb, you stuck the BT USB into your pc, then you can effortlessly transfer files between your tablet and the pc using bt. There is nothing to learn, just hi light the file on your tablet and select sent to bt. one problem though, you can only send files one at a time, no folder.

The answer to your first question can be found here:
