Customizing Menus - I did it!
1 Attachment(s)
I followed the Wiki instructions to get root, which is necessary, and then to modify the menus, and this is what I got - which is what I wanted: (see the attached JPG).
One thing that I want to mention is this - when you install any new app, it will typically go into the Extras menu, and since I removed that menu, it will re-create the Extras folder, and associated menu, again. It will put the new item in the Extras folder. What do you do? Just go back into XTerm and become root again, and move the *.desktop file into your folder, and then remove the Extras folder again. If you re-install, the new version of the program will go back into the Extras folder - if you click on this icon, it will call the "old" version. You could do a link to the file in the Extras folder, in the new place, but I haven't tried that yet. I didn't know if it would show the right icon, or what. Is this any different from Windows? Well, when you install an application in Windows, usually it will ask you what start menu folder to install it to, or it will default to a particular menu location, like "Accessories", or "System Tools" - the Nokia just always puts it into the Extras menu. Anyway, this is cool! |
Looks good!
Your new menus look great!
Could you post a more detailed description of what you actually did to get the new menus? I was able to remove some of the clutter from the standard menu by removing some files, but I'd like to know how to create new menus and then move newly installed apps to those menus. Thanks! |

If you've lived in Windows all of your life, there will be a bit of a learning curve. |

Type: cd /etc/others-menu/ In this menu you will find folders. Type ls to see them. They are named in this format: number + "tana_fi" + extras so, for example... /etc/others-menu/1500_tana_fi_extras/ This folder contains all the Extras programs. So if you cd to this folder, you will see a bunch of files, like "1112_dejapim.desktop". This is the program for Dejapim, for example. Once you go there, type cd .. to go back up one level. NOTE: type it exactly like that-> 'cd ..' (with the space, but not the apostrophes). _________________ Say you want to make a new menu folder (a new group), called "Office", and you want it to appear above the Extras folder. You would name it: (a number less than 1500, so 1499) + "_Office" or: 1499_Office just type: mkdir 1499_Office Now look at your menu - it will have a new group, called Office! And it is right above the Extras folder! It is easy - just copy the 1112_dejapim.desktop file to your new folder, like this: cp 1112_dejapim.desktop /etc/others-menu/1499_Office/ Now, look at your menu, it will have Dejapim in it! Now, you don't want to have the other item, so delete it, by typing: rm 1112_dejapim.desktop Once you remove the very last item in your Extras folder, it will no longer appear in the menu. Really, you should look at the Wiki section: http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi...e_program_menu Everything you need to do is in there. You have to be root, or it won't work. I modified the gainroot.sh file, as they mentioned in here: http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowDoiBecomeRoot |
Oh, and another thing - I connected to my 770 via the MacOSX interface on my wife's iBook, so I used the Mac stuff.
____________________ In the HowDoIBecomeRoot directions, it says: chmod a+x "flasher..." What they mean, is this: Open Terminal in MacOSX. Then become root on the Mac. If you are at the root level already, then you are good. If you don't even have a root user on your Mac, then guess what? You are the root! Then you need to navigate, i.e., 'cd' to the folder where you downloaded the file. If you downloaded it to the Desktop, which is the default in Safari, keep cd'ing and ls'ing until you actually see the flasher.macosx file that you downloaded. Otherwise, when you try to run the chmod command, it won't find the physical file. When it says: chmod a+x "flasher..." What you should type is: chmod a+x "flasher.macosx" - basically, the same way you saved it. Then when it says: execute ./flasher --enable-rd-mode --reboot ... you need to execute flasher.macosx You haven't done it right until you see the stuff like this on your Mac terminal window: USB device found found at bus 001 |
Thanks for the replies! That's exactly what I was looking for. I've already rooted my 770, so this should be a piece of cake.
