Usability issue: closing browser window in full screen mode

I've been using my 770 now about for a week. Mostly I use it for reading news and browsing my favourite web sites.

Based on my experience I have found a severe shortcoming in the usability design. This is that you have no way to close browser window in full screen mode from UI. It is very common use case to open a new window from a web page hyperlink and close that window in order to return to the orginal web page.

All this means that you have to press the full screen button and switch between full screen/normal all the time. This is stupid. I hope in the next software update I will see the "X"-button in the browser window also in the full screen mode.

Agreed. This is a big annoyance for me as well.

There is another way. Tap and hold the screen to get the context menu, then select Close Window from the Navigation menu.

It's well hidden but the option is there.

There is yet another way to accomplish this task.
Just press the escape key long enough, the active browser's window will close.

Just press & hold the back/escape button right under the directional pad,
it closes any maximized app window

Great Tip. Thanks !

You could also hit the Menu button on the device; the one above Home and below Escape. It will also bring up the context window, and you can choose Close Window or Close All Windows. I tried it with 3 browsers open, maximized, and when I closed one, it automatically went to the previously opened, maximized browser window.

This might be slightly quicker than "click and hold".

Since we're talking minor annoyances mine is that in the email app I can't select a group of emails easily (say to delete a bunch all at once rather than having to do it painfully one at a time). You can select all or you can mark individual messages through the menu (but not through tapping and holding unfortunately) but there is no quick way to mark say the top three out of 10 emails. Also it seems tricky sometimes to even highlight a email on the right hand view without them opening. I would have though one tap would highlight it then a second would open it. Maybe I am double tapping by mistake but the thing is too slow and unresponsive sometimes ot know which taps things are a consequence of. I have to use the right arrow key to highlight an email there without it opening. What I really want is to be able to drag and select a group of messages or have a mark button on the bottom tool bar.

I think if you surf the web with one hand you can hit the menu key and bring up the menu or or if you surf with two hand, use the stylus to tap on the screen and it will bring up a menu so you can switch screen....and do many other things.

Live via 770 Bluetooth keyboard:

Yes, press the Menu button as others have said. I myself was switching between modes before the light went on. Duh.

Some things I was slow to learn:
  • Pressing the Escape key is the same as clicking the Back button. Added later: And using a long press will close the window (thanks, ragnar!)
  • ...press the Menu key to do this [close a window in Fullscreen mode]

I've never gotten the Escape key to close a Fullscreen window, though.

This may be common knowledge (and I realize most of the time people aren't using BT keyboards during routine web surfing) but Alt-C will close full-screen applications, including browser windows.

Also Alt-D toggles back and forth between the desktop, and Alt-N and Alt-P cycle through open apps forward and backward respectively.

Probably other keyboard gems hiding in there, but I've not discovered them (or bothered to pour through the source).

@ desktop:

Nice keyboard tips!! F4 will call down the menu for me. Another F (forget which now) will minimize. I think one other F does something too. Will detail all in my eventual keyboard review...
