I have installed all of those; I just added the repositories and installed them through the Applications Manager.

What error messages do you get when you try to install? How are you trying to install (ie: using apt-get; Application Manager; one-click)? Have you looked at the Log in Application Manager - what does it say?

We need more information to be able to help :)

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

I have tried through both app manager and going to Maemo and the "Top download" and clicking through the links. It goes to app manager either way, asks if I want to install, sits there saying "Downloading" then after 15 or so secs says "Download Failed", been acting this way since upgrading to the latest firmware about 2 weeks ago.

Ok... open Applications Manager then tap Menu->Tools->Log see what it says there. This will give you a fairly detailed description of why your download is failing. Post the last logged attempt to install and we'll see if we can't figure it out.

There is another option but it's more complicated so let's start with this one first :)

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

For the bulk of your problems it appears that your memory card (MMC2) seems to be in read-only mode, maybe corrupted? Application manager cannot download needed packages. Check the settings of application manager and disable this: Use MMC to download packages.

For the 'Public Key' error - you could try 'apt-get update' in Xterm as root. That should get the newest key for you.

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

Wierd about the card not able to be written to...

I wrote the log to it to get it to my PC for uploaded here...

I guess I could reformat it to get it back in shape and try again...Where in Control Panel is the setting to use the external memory? I looked in memory and am not seeing where to turn it off.

Did a google search and found becomeroot, but can't install it due to the above issue. In a catch-22 situation now, can get become root to get becomeroot but can't download become root to become root.

I will try that and the Xterm command. BTW, what is the default root password on a N810?

Thanks!

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

Ok, maybe this is connected to all the issues, WHen I try to plug in my 810 by it's USB. I get: Unable to connect via USB, Memory card in use: Internal Memory card.

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

Tried a new Mini-SD card and got the same error, also I can write to both cards so I don't think it's a corrupted card or a bad slot.

Not sure why it isn't writing to the card correctly...

Any ideas?

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

I am a N8x0 newbie and my Unix/Linux knowledge is thirty years out of date, so take this for what it's worth.

But when I've seen the "Memory card in use" message, it's been because I had an app or dialog open that referenced a folder or file on the card.

Have you tried turning your unit off and on (i.e., rebooting)? I've seen one or two strange repeatable behaviors on my N810 that have been cured by rebooting.

If that doesn't shake it loose, see what processes are running. Maybe someone can post, for comparison, a list of the processes running in a clean OS 2008 with no apps installed.

Have you tried turning virtual memory off?

Honeybadger 2008-01-07 22:42

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

Ya, I've tried a few power cycles, and even a reblast with the latest firmware, no joy.

When I try to turn off virtual memory it just tells me: "unable to remote virtual memory", whatever that means.

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

I had a corrupted swap file on my N800 that I cleared by shutting down the N800, removing the internal SD card and, using a card-reader on a PC, deleted the swap file. I could not figure out any other way to get rid of the problem which started with 'Unable to connect via USB, Memory card in use: Internal Memory card' and then went rapidly downhill.

I am not recommending this, but it worked for me. If you have an N810 then I don't know what you can do.

Anyone have a copy of nethack for OS2008? The version in the repositories installs, but won't run.

Oh dear Honeybadger - If you can't become root (type: 'sudo gainroot' in Xterminal) and you've tried a different SD card and you've reflashed your OS - but it's still broken:confused:... I'm afraid that I'm at a loss as to what to tell you :o Hopefully, someone else with more knowledge can come along and help here. Sorry. :(

By internal SD card, do you mean ejecting the card, or dismantling my 810 and removing an internal component?

Thanks

When I try Sudo gainroot, I get enable RD mode if I want to break my device...sound ominous...

advice?

Sorry again, I've never gotten that message before. Maybe that's what you get when you don't have becomeroot installed?

1. Proceed with caution.

2. Do not alter, move. or delete any files unless you have made a back-up copy, know how to use the back-up, and are reasonably certain of the consequences of your actions.

3. No sniveling if things go wrong.

:)

The external one is the one in the card slot, the internal one is the one near the battery slot.

N810s only have one slot so no way to remove the internal one without soldering...

Sorry, I was not sure if you had an N800 or an N810.

Since it is an N810 then I presume that the swap file is on the internal (built-in and fixed) SD memory which you cannot remove. So if your problem is a corrupted swap file then I have no idea what you can do about it. Maybe if you tried to allocate a smaller swap file then it might lose the existing one?

Don.

Nope, won't let me change size or anything...

Maybe I'll have to send it back to Nokia?

I found that you need to use Red Pill mode in order to get Jeff Elkins' packages. Hope this helps.

Yes, that opened up Elkins' repository. Thank you.

For anyone interested, here's instructions for Red Pill mode.

Re: Applications working on OS 2008

Eugh. Red Pill mode shouldn't be the default fallback position - I'd really recommend you raise it with Jeff Elkins.

This kind of workaround (and I group the gronmayer solution to the repository mess in here), massively raises the barrier of entry to the NITs. Solving the problems properly doesn't really take much more work, it just requires different people to do it.

Short version: I very strongly believe all software should be in extras (or extras-testing for non-production quality stuff) which no dependencies on any packages which aren't in the default repository list, or in the same repository.

Anything less than that is sub-optimal in so many ways.
