OK, so the guy's using an N95 but there's a clear future here for internet tablets. All Nokia has to do is add-in a decent quality video camera to the next model.

You'd need 2 cameras. Both would have to be decent quality.

One camera that is like the N810's chat cam, where the reporter can record themselves and watch themself at the same time (so they can do that part of the report and see how they're turning out as they go).

And then a camera that points away from the user, like most cell phone cameras and such, so that the reporter can easily take video and pictures of other subjects, while watching the screen (you can't do that on the N810; you could do it with a camera like the one on the N800, but the quality wouldn't be good).

I think it'd be an outstanding idea. But, I've clearly been asking for a 2 camera IT (with better quality than the N800's) since I got on these boards, so no one should be surprised I'd like it :-)


So. yeah. 2 cameras and a tripod mount :-)

For a brave company, the way is now clear to produce the ultimate tablet. Use the N800 form factor, boost the battery life, boost the memory into the double-digit gigabyte range, add a very high quality camera (high megapixel, 25FPS HD video, image stabilisation), keep it open source, add in ability to take a SIM card, and sell it for a reasonable price... None of this is pipe dreaming. It's all here and available right now (except maybe for the battery).

This really could be all things to all people. Video camera, stills camera, internet device, phone, hifi system (just plug it into speakers)... It really would be a personal digital companion.

Oh, and don't forget to produce the Facebook application that ties in with all these functions.

I'd have to vote for decent audio recording capabilities - it seems Nokia has largely ignored the DSP onboard the IT. Reportage with great pictures and awful sound won't work.

Everything mentioned above sounds great as well (and BT audio takes care of the hifi bit). Grab the camera and SIM bits from the N95, roll it all in an N810 shell and the world's news organizations will be interested. And so would I...

Still. Not a bad price for something that could do all that. I have an airsoft rifle that just shoot a 6mm plastic bb that cost me 1280$++.. So paying 900,- for a HD quality Cam-corder w/2 camera + all the features of a N800.. Cind of a bargain.

I disagree. You're basing your thinking on the current climate and current devices.

It's said that Apple sold their early iPods with a very slim profit, and it's not unusual for other companies with pioneering technology to sell at the break-even point.

This is what I mean when I said it would take a brave company to create such a device. Profits would come later, when you own the market -- just like Apple do with the iPod.

It's a great device. But the price thing is a pipe dream. 1600 euro for Finland, for example. Miniaturization costs quite much.

No, like I said, a brave company would launch the product with a slim (possibly non-existent) profit margin. So you'd be looking at $300.

Asus have managed to get a lot of this into something not much larger than the Nokia tablets -- the Eee. Remember that companies produce prototypes based not on what's available right now, but what's available in time for launch. Assuming one or two years R&D (which is quick!), it's easy to imagine that the technology will be ready and competitively priced.

But this is all fantasy.

The Eee is nearly twice as wide, twice as long and more than twice as thick. These are hardly comparable sized gadgets. ;)

I should think a lot of that space is eaten up with the battery and like I said, I admit the battery technology right now isn't quite up to my dream device.

Everything else is here, and can be miniaturised. It might present challenges but it's doable.
