pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Hey, folks!

Here're some of the changes:

Most protocols are now bundled with Pidgin. A few, including AIM/ICQ, XMPP, Sametime, and Bonjour remain separate.

Send button disappears when a physical keyboard becomes available.

On Chinook, Pidgin uses its customary status bar icon. Currently it looks ugly, but that should be fixed Real Soon Now(TM) ;)

The typing notification icon is now displayed to the right of the buddy icon in the conversation window's new infopane.

Added a plugin to the catalogue that gives you some more preferences for Pidgin. You can turn off the buddy list tooltips, and you can set the font size for the buddy list and conversations, among other options.

Unfortunately, it turns out that not-freezing Pidgin while pidgin-otr is generating a key is rather crash-prone. Thus, pidgin-otr now no longer prevents Pidgin from hanging while a key is being generated. Nonetheless, it does provide a non-hanging progress indication (of sorts).

The catalogue is now organized slightly differently. Please have a look at http://pidgin.garage.maemo.org/ for installation instructions.

Chinook version??? Thanks nix_nix!

:)

EDIT: It works! I tried the sametime protocol with our work server (finally got an OS2008 VPN build) and it worked right off the bat. I like the enhancements. :)

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Thanks for the updated version. I will give it a test run tomorrow.

(As some protocols are bundled, does this mean we should uninstall the previous installed protocols first? I didn't see this in the instructions. I will try uninstalling them first :))

I had to do an uninstall of the previous version first. but it went fine after that.

Is the N810 shipping with pidgin? thoughtfix said when its released it will support the msn chatclient. is this true?

It always has supported MSN through Jabber. That's probably what thoughtfix meant, though he'd have to tell us himself.

Texrat 2007-10-30 14:17

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

At the moment the N810 does not ship with Pidgin. Zerojay's response was correct.

kingka 2007-10-30 14:45

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

well, he mentioned in the candid video that it will ship with msn support. not sure if he was referring to jaber or pidgin.

zerojay 2007-10-30 15:18

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Must be Jabber.

Texrat 2007-10-30 15:28

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Again, no Pidgin (currently) shipping installed, so Thoughtfix had to be referring to jabber.

Note however that even though it's missing the user-friendly .install package, Pidgin installs easily onto the N810 once the proper repositories are setup and so far it's working very well for me with the sametime protocol. I have not yet tried others such as MSN.

kingka 2007-10-30 15:40

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

ok, so I guess it will be jabber. cool. as long as msn support is packaged with jabber upon release, I'm happy. I'd like to install (or at least try to install) pidgin.

That's not how Jabber works. You have to use a server which includes an MSN gateway. The client doesn't need to change (or even know what MSN is). The server has to have the gateways you want installed.

You can find plenty of public Jabber servers (or run your own if you have an FQDN) with a google search for "public Jabber servers". You'll have to set up the gateways on your PC first before they'll work on the tablet though (as the tablet Jabber client has no service browser/discovery).

Kingka, you've just inspired me.

Texrat 2007-10-30 16:28

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

For me, jabber is more difficult to deal with than Pidgin. I got tired of checking servers to see which one supported what protocol.

Once it's installed, with minor configuration required, Pidgin just works. The new configuration wizards make it even nicer.

kingka 2007-10-30 17:25

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

yea, i'm a total noob with all this as you can see. sad innit. but if I set up the gateways on my PC I'm assuming my comp needs to be on all the time....

I'll try my luck with pidgin. i'll have to check the noob forum, hopefully there's a step by step.

Unless you have a domain name pointed to your PC, you can't run a Jabber server on it.

I did a 5 minute check a year ago. Never had to touch it since.. but I can understand that it's more painful... but it's worth it to not have to install or run Pidgin and instead use the internal IM client.

Something else I'll have to add then.

Your concern about trying to find a server with the protocols you'll need is part of the reason why I'm interested in running a Jabber server available to the tablet community. No guesswork... all the gateways always up, always working and you know where to go.

That would be awesome, since about a year ago I tried the AIM over jabber thing and never could get a server working right. It would rock to have one that 'we' controled and used. But since I don't use jabber, Pidgin is awesome. I would love a way to replace the native chat with pidgin, then I would not be wasting the contacts menu.

zerojay 2007-10-30 18:05

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

I'm interested in offering other stuff too, such as e-mail (IMAP, POP) and other stuff to tablet users. I'm just want to clear up a few things with a potential hoster (number of jabber users allowed on the server?) and I might go through with it.

I guess it all depends on if anyone would be willing to use this stuff. Free, of course.

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Slightly OT: Zerojay, would this be a linux server?

The only reason I ask is that I want to do *something* with the ldug.org (Linux device User Group) domain name I created a while back that is now loitering on a (gasp) Windows server. If you want that domain name I could transfer it to you, and possibly work with you (and others) on making it into something.

Yeah, I'm a Linux guy. The providers I'm looking at all run Linux/FreeBSD boxes. I'm still in the "maybe" stage of doing this sort of thing (money's a little tight). I'd be more than willing to cooperate with others to get something good, stable and useful for fellow tablet users off the ground. Sure, I wouldn't mind using the domain either.

Yes I have a N800. The VPN I see now for N800 is the VPNC. The OS2008 VPN, is it also VPNC or VPN?

How am i supposed to reach this folder from sources.list to be able to apt-get upgrade?

http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/dists-files/bora/

With my current line it doesn't work and trying to point to that folder gives a Packages.gz not found error...

deb http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/pidgin-dist /

I don't want to remove / install by hand, cheers! ;-)

The new deb line is

deb http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/ chinook pidgin

if you're running Chinook, and

deb http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/ bora pidgin

if you're running anything older than Chinook.

Please have a look at http://pidgin.garage.maemo.org/

I'm confused by that response.

The VPN tool I'm referring to is a custom GUI wrapper around VPNC. I don't see any VPN tool coming with OS2008. However, the folks responsible for our internal tool did just compile a version the runs under OS2008.

Re: pidgin-2.2.2 is out

Well, I added a .install file:

https://maemo.org/downloads/product/...6b47bb47b.html

http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/pidgin.install

I think this only works on Chinook, because it adds multiple repositories. Also, you cannot install multiple packages from a .install file, so it only installs Pidgin - no sounds, no smileys :(

But, I guess it's better than nothing ... *shrug*

And they STILL can't fix the problem with RTcomm not being able to utilize a VPN tunnel to connect to a SIP server?
How about those brainiacs on the inside releasing that little wrapper tool - minus the specific Nokia internal stuff of course - to the rest of the world? OR at least releasing the modified sources?

I have installed Pidgin and it works great.

Is there a way for it to appear on the Contacts maemo-menu, and get rid of the default Chat icon (and the app itself)?
