Cool. I'm looking at expanding the id, such as into t-shirts, mugs, etc (I have a cafepress account on hold at www.cafepress.com/cynicalsigns that I can use for us and I'm looking at competitors as well).

Here's one idea:

http://www.jablet.net/images/UserID1.png

First image is the typical "pocket" graphic, second one goes across the back of the shirt (shoulder to shoulder). People could write in their user name with a laundry pen to advertise. :D

zero and pizel (also r2d2):

I uploaded a java-based web client for jabber to the site. You can access it at:

http://jablet.net/webjabber/main.jsp

It takes a while to load (probably first time initialization). At this time I haven't done much with it; everything is set to defaults. Hopefully it will work for us.

guys, r2d2rogers offered to help with MySQL stuff. Let's give him a shot. Along those lines, r2d2, what we're going to need soon is a single user registration database. Hopefully we can tie in the current dreamhost jabber users specific to jablet.net. Jablet.net will also share user registration with LDUG.org but I have not yet moved that domain over. We can use ldug.dreamhosters.net until I do.

NOTE: I am also looking at other clients. This one is unfinished and I really want one with vCard support. I see one called jbother that I will also test, etc.

EDIT: a resource for Openfire stuff: http://www.igniterealtime.org/projec...re/plugins.jsp

EDIT 2: jabber portal resource http://jabberportal.mray.de/taxonomy/term/238

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Well, here's what's going on from my end.

I find the Jabber server on dreamhost a little unreliable and just plain lacking stuff people need/like (status messages, display pictures) as well as forcing us to add users manually.

I've installed openfire on my home machine and aside from one small bug (display images aren't pulled unless you specifically look at a person's profile - currently being fixed), I'm completely blown away by the feature set.

If you want to give it a shot (please do!) the server is at 24.202.127.50. Registration is open and doable from any Jabber client. If you take a look at the services listed, it's far better.

Also, we can tie user logins all together with LDAP, I believe. One login for all services.

alterego (#maemo) offered his help with coding a wizard for setting up the tablets for use once I've sent him an outline of how I'd like it to work/act. He also offered the possibility of running the Jabber server on one of his Linux boxes, which is an incredible offer.

I'm still hanging out in the Jablet room at conference.jabber.jablet.net. Tex, send me a message and I can show you around the Openfire web interface if you're interested. (Holy crap, have you ever seen so many gateways on a Jabber server before? I didn't install Asterisk-IM yet... but it could be VERY interesting.)

And by the way.. http://24.202.127.50:9090/plugins/pr...@24.202.127.50jay@24.202.127.50

Hehe.. web presence icons, perfect for forums, blog posts, whatever... status updates whenever the icon is pulled. :D

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Zero, looking ahead, I don't believe that asterisk support stable LDAP for SIP users yet. I was envisaging a single register/change password PHP page which would update all the revelant databases. Clunky, yes, but it should work and be fairly easy to extend to other services. Especially if you want to start building custom services on the site, without the overhead of handling an LDAP server.

Sharing registration between jablet and ldug, this might be the simpler route too. We would either need to lock down registration via a jabber client, or make registration via that route automatically create the other accounts.

I've not explored in depth, but I believe that openfire uses a standard database for storing all it's information, so it should be fairly easy to create users and query user status for displaying on the site, if so desired. I already have both of these services running at home, so that's not a problem.

If this is the route you want to start going down, I can look into it and probably set up something basic web-wise on my home server for registering with openfire and asterisk at the same time, and for querying user status?

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Tex, that java client page ain't working, which as it's a JSP page is hardly surprising as it would need a Java web server. If you want me to host it for a trial I can, as I run numerous Java web servers; it is my day job, after all :)
