Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Another service proposal: people are really wanting pan and other network sharing options made easy. THAT might be another "killer app". For instance, if only the tablets could be made into occasional wifi providers, not just consumers-- that way my kids could play collaborative Nintendo DS games on the road. Or if a tablet could share its wifi access with another, or if a bluetooth phone could be used as the conduit for 2 or more tablets...
All of these would be highly popular I believe. |

That's something that we can't do on the website though and I don't see how we could easily pull something like that off on the tablet to be honest.
Video Center database up and running. We should be able to fit that kind of thing into any design we please. I'll probably add a few more fields to the database to allow alternate feeds such as low/high end (only if both are usable on the tablets) as well as alternative mp3 podcast feeds if available. Constantly making changes. Don't be surprised if it looks different than it did five minutes ago. More and more ideas just keep popping up. ;) |

Glad you got the juice flowing, and sorry for the random post above. I get these crazy ideas, just ignore me. :p

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Hi
Big thanks to all for taking this initiative. I will be using the service. I know i am late to the discussion, but for email i was wondering if anyone had considered deploying an instance of the open source exhange equivalent ... Zimbra. See zimbra.com does the dreamhost server allow for deploying of your own packages ... Do you get command line access and/root access to your account area. Zimbra has the best desktop experience, however the tablet experience is lacking barring the new iphone interface having been developed for rel 5 due out soon, that looks great. I wont list all the features here, the website has a demo for anyone interested in trying the software out. Let me know how this thought is taken by the project leads. If not for this phase does anyone know if there is a cheap hosting company where i could install a zimbra server and test drive it. Great job, and look forward to beta testing everything you deploy with. Thanks . Thanks . Thanks |

Actually, I saw support on dreamhost for cron jobs, but that's it.
The cheapest virtual hosting I found was $30 USD per month, and that was VERY basic... very low bandwidth, storage, etc. The more robust offerings get up to and over $100 USD per month very quickly. : / |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Yes, it does get very expensive very quickly.
I'd host it all myself at home if it weren't for bandwidth concerns. Edit: Moved Video Center stuff to http://www.jablet.net/videocenter/. |

http://www.tektonic.net/unmanaged.html - $28 pm for 100mbs/500gb bandwidth, 20gb disk, 512mb ram. $53 pm for double everything. I run several fairly extensive DB-based java e-commerce websites and a mail server quite happily off the $28pm package.
I don't have a fat enough pipe to host anything significant at home, but I can host test servers. I need to keep the majority of my bandwidth for VOIP |
