Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

I've been kicking around the idea of running a server offering services specifically to tablet users. Stuff such as Jabber, e-mail (IMAP) maybe blogging and whatever else you can think of. Totally free for everyone.

I noticed that a lot of people just don't use or know about Jabber and that you can use it for connecting to the various IM services (AIM, MSN, etc...) with it. Oftentimes, people get fed up of searching for a public Jabber server with the right gateways... stuff like that. So my idea is to basically take the guesswork out of the equation and set up a server for one and all. Full graphical tutorials for setups of all services on all tablets, etc...

So my question is would you be interested in using something like this personally? Why or why not? What other kinds of services would you like to see? Are you interested in lending a hand?

I'm just looking for a good way to give back to this community after getting so much from it.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

A Jabber server sounds like a cool idea with as many transports as possible.

Once Modest is released, I'll give it a go with Google's new IMAP before deciding whether to go back on giving up on mobile email.

Blogging's covered with maddler's maemopeople.org, I think.

But, as I said at the outset, personally I'd find a Jabber server cool, because I have enough fun with the ones at work with just an XMPP transport to mean I don't want to run one at home, too :)

Wasn't aware of maemopeople being open. A consolidated set of services specifically for tablet users with full tutorials (because not all tablet users are powerusers/programmers)... we'll see.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Some of that was my goal with LDUG, which I could not pull off alone. Glad to see you taking this on, zero, and as I said I'll help where and how I can.

EDIT: if you want to try using 1and1's Linux hosting service, I could set that up and add you as an admin...

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

That could be interesting. I hope it's not too expensive or you've already got an account.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

1and1 is cheap. I already have a Windows host, and could easily add Linux.

Okay... sounds good, but let's wait and see what sort of reception the idea gets first.

As far as Jabber goes, Openfire looks like an awesome Jabber server with all the options we'd need, though it runs on Java. Would that be doable?

I don't see why not.

A word of warning, although Openfire is certainly one of the best Jabber/XMPP servers around; there are a number of niggles we've had with it in the past. Nothing major, and nothing which should stop you using it, just expect a little bit of pain...

What kind of pain are we talking about?

Stability, upgrading from one version to another, etc.

Uhh reliable transports is something i'd kill for :)

That's part of the goal. Lots of transports and extra services which are stable and available to all easily.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Aside from GTalk, it's been a while since I used Jabber. I've been happy with Pidgin 2.2.2 on my N800, and I'm looking forward to using Pidgin 2.2.2 on the N810.

My previous experience with Jabber was "use only as a last resort, if no other resources were available." I've seen intermittent transport failures on the servers I used, and I saw some pretty bizzare XML translation errors. Stuff such as font changes, use of HTML (anchor tags), or avatar/icon changes weren't being passed through Jabber correctly.

What's the state of Jabber now? Does OpenFire support formatting, HTML, and avatars?

Having a tablet-friendly server with services to the tablet user community sounds promising. :)

I dont understand this ... why would I need yet another jabber/imap-account? whats the point besides having a maemo or IT-related domain?

I haven't seen anything like that in years... at least not on the server I've been using anyways.

Well, maybe you don't, but it seems like there's quite a few people that are interested in having these kinds of services but don't know much about how to use them, how to get Jabber connected to AIM, MSN, etc... or just don't know a server with stable transports. I'm kind of looking at it as an all-in-one solution for the services a tablet user might need.

Sure, I realize that most power users already know and have what they want already... just thought I'd put out a more tablet-based alternative.

Texrat 2007-10-31 15:33

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Just for grins, I checked some domain names. The following are available:

tabletport.net
maemoport.net
maemotrans.net

...and many, many more!

Hmmm... pair one of those up with a fully-functioning LDUG, partner with ITT here, and it's the holy trinity of tablet resources! :D

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Tablettalker.net? Go Web 2.0 with Tablettalkr.net... hahah.

There's so many possible choices.

Tex is thinking big. I like that. :D

So the main point would be to give tablet-users an easy to use all-in-one solution, with documentation etc. based on the tablet interface, and not so much in the service as such? Oh. - Oh! Thats it.

Yeah, you've got the idea. A lot of newbies just don't know how some of these things work, don't know they exist, can't find the right places, etc... so kind of a combined graphical "how-to"/"what is"/"why" along with the service itself.

Of course, it certainly wouldn't be limited to newbies and advanced users will just be given the info they need, etc...

zerojay 2007-10-31 16:38

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Okay.. seems like "if the right services were available" is going to be a winner... so what are the right services for you? What are you looking for? What do you want? Go wild.

Something with tablet in the name would probably be best, I think. Anyone have any other ideas?

I had some awesome ones, but they're already taken. But trust me: I'm good at domain names. I'll nail it.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

I'm screwing around with Openfire 3.3.3. Looks pretty well done (at least the Windows version I have to run here at work). I'd like to hold off for 3.4.0 which is supposed to be released today. Apparently v1.2.0 of the IM gateways have support for avatars (which some people find pretty important) and works only with 3.4.0.

Instead of a howto, why not a "do" - like (i'm dreaming now):
create an application that asks for a name (or the tablet owners real name, whatever) & a password - then generates Jabber, Mail, SIP, ITT...-accounts for the user and configures them on the tablet. would be two input fields and you're ready to go.
(of course it would be nice if this would come pre-installed, like skype. otherwise the inexperienced user would need to find out how to install software....)

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Hmm... that's a pretty good idea as well. I would assume these settings are just regular text files sitting in /home/user/... great idea.

I like this idea. I sometimes feel like the first guy in town with a telephone when I turn on my tablet. There's noone to call...

Even if it wasn't totally free. I'd certainly make a contribution to startup cost/effort.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

Yeah, I like benny's suggestion. That adds a LOT of value!

EDIT: ok, zero, I'll set this up (I've been meaning to anyway with LDUG). 1and1 Linux Business server is a mere $10 per month (https://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Ho...f=Order-Tariff) and has the necessary features. -DC- already donated $10 to the cause a while back, so there's 1 month!

EDIT 2:

jabtab.net?
jablet.net?

Both available!

zerojay 2007-10-31 18:00

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?

In talking with Openfire's developers, v3.4.0 is going live at some point tonight along with v1.2.0 of the IM gateway.

Seems like we've got interest, Tex... I guess whenever you put up the server (and figure out a domain name), we'll throw OpenFire 3.4.0 on it and play around.

I'm kind of interested in creating a sort of lifestream type thing. Allow users to post links to their profiles on various different sites (Flickr, Digg, etc...) and put it all in an RSS feed. Sort of a "what I'm doing online" sort of thing. Kind of what you can do with Jaiku.

GarageBattle is listening to Song A on Last.FM
Texrat has posted 3 pictures on Flickr
...

That sort of thing.. I don't know. Just brainstorming.

I thought of jabtab.net also but who.is told me it was owned by GoDaddy? If we could get jabtab... that would be great.

$10 a month is pretty damn cheap. I suppose we'll just put a donation button up somewhere if anyone's wanting to help out with hosting fees.

Who knows... this could be big.

Done.

I went with "jablet.net" for now, but the package includes 3 domains. I'll transfer ldug.org later, so that leaves 1 open if a better name comes along... but I'm really starting to like jablet...

Once admin panel is ready, zero, I will PM you the details. I'll set up an admin email account we can both access by default and you can setup any others you wish also.
