Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
weird. logged in on dreamhost, it says "no jabber users have been created".
nevermind.. figured it out.. I have to click over to your account. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
I see you're making progress! :)
Try logging in-- I was able to even though it said "pending" |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Tex, I'm not authenticated yet, which I assume is because I've not connected. I'm at work now, and our firewall won't let me connect. When I get home I'll finish the process.

I'll be home in an hour or so, so you can harass me all you want then :)

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Success! Zero and I had a decent dialog going. Joining chat rooms worked but creating them is buggy; zero tried to create a 'jablet' room but received an error. When I tried to do it, I was told I was BANNED! :D Crazy.
Anyway, I'll try you later pixel. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Here's the current status of this project, as far as I can tell. (Tex, feel free to slap me around if I'm wrong here or if you've got more to add.)
Domain: I believe this is in the middle of being transfered or forwarded. Jabber: Works. Gateways to external IM networks are untested and will have to wait until I get home in about 3 1/2-4 hours. Groupchat works but might possibly be limited to chatrooms already created. If possible, we'll be creating our own specific chatroom that I intend on using like an IRC channel. E-Mail: Untested, but foresee no problems. Web: Untouched at this point. Intention is to make everything on the site very tablet-friendly, not just in terms of content, but in terms of layout as well (especially considering the thread about Maemo and ITT not being very useable/friendly on tablets). Those of you who are interested in helping out in one way or another, let us know what you're interested in doing. I'll keep posting status updates periodically. Don't be afraid to ping me or Tex if you've got questions or anything else. Our intent (if I can speak for Tex) on making this new server a go-to point for tablet users relies on you and your feedback, so don't be afraid to pipe up, make suggestions or shoot poison arrows in our direction (which we both know you are all quite capable of doing, hehe). More info as we get it. |

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Yeah, you can speak for me, zero, and well said!
And lest anyone misunderstand: zerojay deserves all the kudos for this. I was one of the few complaining about how confusing jabber configuration could be and he motivated me to do more than complain. So the ball is rolling and looking good so far. Hopefully soon you will see at least an alpha version of jablet.net come alive. Zero and Pixel will handle the mechanics of that; for now I'm going to work on site design. Eventually I won't be as involved in jablet.net as I will a revived LDUG.org, which will exist on the same host. On that note, we will definitely be looking for another hand or three. Specifically, a really sharp web coder would be ideal. There will be a need for forms, scripts, etc. I know enough to provide direction and testing but beyond that I'm too dangerous. :D Note that this role could be for both sites or we could split it up. Either way is okay. As zero said, the goal is to really, really focus on making these sites tablet-friendly. More so than any other site. That will demand a lot of usability brainstorming, design and testing. Obviously scrolling should be minimized and links made finger-friendly. Objects per page should be kept to a severe minimum (none of this 200+ objects like you'll hit on amazon.com). LDUG.org will maintain its original focus, and jablet.net will orient around services, particularly IM. I foresee a sort of wizard approach to its design and functionality. In fact, if I may leap ahead here, what I'd REALLY like to eventually see is users creating a jabber account on jablet.net and then scripting automating the account creation on their tablet. Is it possible? I'd like to think so, and the one who can make that happen will earn lots of virtual cookies. :) I also expect both sites to share user registration to keep things simple, and run off a database as much as possible (MySQL I suspect). I can help with database design and SQL queries but again, someone with focus there would be ideal. I'm pumped! Thanks zero for kicking my butt into gear. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
MSN and Yahoo gateways both seem to work. And I can do web work too. My PHP is pretty rusty (I'm assuming that's what you'd need) but I should be able to brush up quickly enough.

The way I've envisioned this, users to jablet.net will have the ability to download a setup wizard (one click .install file). It should be able to handle: a) Registering an account. b) Registering IM gateways. c) Registering e-mail. d) Registering other services (blogging: pointing maemo-blog to the right place?) e) Adding bookmark for Jablet.net The idea is that as soon as the wizard is complete, the tablet is setup and ready to go with little to no extra setup. All choices will be fully optional and not clobber the user's current settings. Whether or not we can register Jabber users through this wizard is entirely dependant on the Jabber server allowing it. I doubt that's the case though. I'll have to test it out a bit later tonight. If we have to add users manually, it will be a bit of a pain, but not the end of the world. Registering gateways from the wizard will require a very minimal Jabber client. Just enough to login, get the gateways from the server and send in the registration info. This shouldn't be too difficult. Anyone interested in helping, let us know. Just like Nokia is moving towards the mainstream with the tablets step-by-step, our site will be more and more user-friendly as we go. Inital stage: Services up and working, still requires user knowledge for setting up gateways. Users manually added to site by admins. No tutorials beyond server addresses and port numbers available. Second stage: Website launched. Graphical tutorials on getting services on the tablet for power users/more determined people. Third stage: Automated registration and setup wizard written in Python/Ruby/whatever. As for how long this will take... depending on how much our significant others protest our disappearance, I can see us being past the initial stage with Jabber and e-mail within a few days. Second stage within a few weeks. Third within a month or two from now (depending on our circumstances, if anyone else will help, etc...) Remember, if there's something you'd like to see us offer, anything, let us know. Idea: one-click installs of podcasts/videocasts in formats known to work on the tablets for use with Video Center. |

Sounds beautiful. :)

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Perhaps we can reserve accounts if anyone's interested in being sure they get their prefered name/nick/whatever... if anyone's interested.

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Good idea.
Folks, PM any one of us if you want to test! BTW, zero, it *looks* like the domain hosting transfer is ok, although DNS info has not fully propogated. EDIT: by PM I mean include desired user name and password. :p |

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
The new IP for jablet.net will be http://66.33.199.53/. So far it shows an error. Pinging jablet.net still returns the 1and1 IP (74.208.57.12). Arg...

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
it can take up to 24 hours for dns to propogate. if this takes off (and I have not doubt it will), maybe it would be worth aiming to move to a cheap, dedicated virtual server. that way we can do whatever we want with it and have complete control. the dreamhosts is a great start, but we are very restricted. I happily stump up $5 a month towards a server. Go the whole hog, jabber, wiki, asterisk (free calls for registered users?) etc... No forum though, wee already got an excellent one here :)
what about the site? what sort of things are you thinking of including? |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
See previous answers in this thread, pixel, for site purpose. I *think* we've covered it. I agree about the forum; no reason to compete with an obvious winner... although there could be a small, dedicated forum for site-specific support.
And yeah, dreamhost can be used to prove it out, then who knows. We have a year at $29. ;) Oh, and I sketched out a jablet logo. I'll work on that maybe tomorrow and get a graphic up for preview. |

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
I'd like each member to kind of have their own little area. microblogging, blogging, pulling from rss to show what they've been listening to on last.fm, links from del.icio.us.. an icon showing their current Jabber status (web presence).. kind of like one central page... "What I've been doing online lately".
At least, I'd like that for myself anyways. Don't know about anyone else. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
:) jablet.net is live for me :) It may still take a while to propagate completely, and it will have to expire from your DNS if you hit the old record (tex' and zero'), but it's definitely transferred

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Okay, after playing around with it a bit, here's what I discovered.
1) The Jabber server appears to be an older version.. or at least running older transports, so avatars do not currently show up nor am I seeing proper status messages. It does work though, and for now, that's all we really need. Avatars from IM gateways, I mean. 2) Creating Jabber chatrooms *does* work. The problem is that the server we need to use isn't simply conference.jablet.net (which would be the default). Instead, it's conference.jabber.jablet.net. You can enter this in the Account Control Panel. Click on the Advanced button and fill it in on chat server (I believe it's the very top of the list). It should work. Join me on jablet@conference.jabber.jablet.net once you've got it working. (That goes for anyone else that has a Jabber/Google Talk account anywhere.) Actually, might not have to do that now that the domain's been setup properly. More as I figure it out. And yes pixel, that virtual hosting is exactly what I'm hoping to get to eventually. I was going to up a small temporary page but the permissions on the directory are read-only for members of our group. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
I see jablet.net on the new domain as well. :)
Zero, do I need to change some permissions? Actually I gave you guys 100% control over everything but billing... EDIT: fixed. It was ftp password. |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Before I go to bed...
It's been an exciting 2 days! Very nice to chat live with zero and pixel today, the culmination of some fast and frantic work! I'm going to try to at least start defining roles. There's some obvious overlap between our skill sets but I'm sure it won't be hard to find focus for each of us. Here's how I guess it will work (by all means point out where I'm being idiotic): Texrat -site identity (logos, etc), promotional, financial, LDUG relaunch, some web work Zerojay -jabber server config, tablet scripting, unspecified Pixelseventy2 -web site construction, web scripting, unspecified How's that? Besides MySQL and future enhancements such as support forum and the other things zero has planned, what am I missing? Whatever it is, it takes the place of "unspecified". :D |
Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Sounds good to me.
Screwing around with Ruby, mainly because I have no experience with it yet. Got it reading lines from the account information files. Play around with it more tomorrow. |

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Yeah, nice preview zero! At least on my tablet: my laptop STILL shows the old 1and1 page! And both are on the same wifi router! Maybe it has something to do with this VPN link...

Re: Jabber/IMAP/???? services for Tablet Users - Would you use it?
Zero I added the conference server into my jabber account to try it out as I have not used jabber before but now when I set status as on the icon just flashed between the on and off icon. is the conference server down or do I need to create a new account for your server?
Also I like the temp page Dave |

What server are you using for Jabber? When you choose to join a conference/groupchat, be sure the server listed is conference.jabber.jablet.net and the actual channel/chatroom is jablet. If you want, I'll set you up with a Jabber account... just say the word/send me a private message on the forums or send me a message through jabber at jay@jablet.net. |

I purged my cache and it still shows up on laptop...
And did you edit your jabber conference setting as zero showed? |
