What's up with Maemo and Internet Tablet Talk?

Does anyone else find these two Web sites, dedicated to the Internet tablet devices, a screaming pain to use with those devices? Shouldn't both those sites be optimized for the devices they support, and/or shouldn't there be an optimized version.

Whats the problem?

I use ITT in full screen mode. A lot less scrolling.

There is a mobile version. At the bottom left of the page (not on the home page) there are several choices in a drop down menu. I think I use mobile 2 on my ITT now. The browser should remember your choice, too. As for maemo.org.... Not sure what to say. I think the application download section is optimized for the ITs, but it's a pain to find anything. I think they need to add a browse all selection. Of course, maybe they have by now - I haven't looked for a while...

Yes. The main screen is ridiculous on my N800 and I've complained about it before. Really a website for Internet Tablets ought not to choke an N800 (due to the adverts) given that the IT's are supposed to be full web experiences not in need of mobile versions.

Re: What's up with Maemo and Internet Tablet Talk?

Certainly the ITT forum can be viewed on the N800 using a less bandwidth hungry style chosen using the Style chooser at the bottom left of the page - I use "Mobile II" myself and while it's not perfect (and somewhat psychedelic) it's a better option than the full-fat version when viewing on the N800 itself (particularly over a 3G or GSM phone connection).

The problem I have is that the flash applets are a CPU hog. The sites would be more usable if a plug-in like NoScript in Firefox were available.

You can use a greasemonkey script for it.

Re: What's up with Maemo and Internet Tablet Talk?

Not sure if this is what the original poster is complaining about, but one thing I've noticed (and found annoying) is that when the front page of ITT loads, it is rendered, then cleared, then re-rendered.
This drags down the 770 quite a bit... and it's annoying when you think it's done and try and click on one of the threads, the screen clears, then re-renders again and you have to scroll back to where you were to actually click on the link you wanted (that you thought you already clicked on). At that point, something (javascript?) is hogging the CPU so much that there is a several second delay between the click and any feedback at all.

I don't think I have much problem with maemo.org though... 'cept maybe the planet maemo page. That's not maemo.org's fault though, that's all of the tablet-unfriendly content being posted there (like the gigantic animated GIFs recently, or heavy flash stuff).

Actually, that's one thing that has annoyed me...
I visit maemo.org's planet maemo page more from my 770 than from regular computers.
I don't think the people posting in their blogs think about that, as every video I've seen has been a youtube video and not something directly viewable on the tablets.
I want to watch them... scratch that - I want to download them and watch them on the train (when I have no net access). I tried using the vidconvert bookmarklet (online streaming conversion), but it only works from the youtube page itself, not from a webpage that has embedded the video.

OK, done venting... :)

the mobile version is a one way street on the mobile devise, you can only go to mobile version, to go to different version, one has to sign and sign back in. I am not quite sure why is that. I think the catalogue is the browse all selection, it is only available for 2006catalogue though, the 2007catalogue is NOT available the last time I look, a week back.

Yes - the old catalog is/has been available to browse. As you note - the new one is not - but should be.

Does it matter that it is a one way street? Why would you want to change back on the IT?

because if theres a choice of styles, a user expects it to be available in each style so he can try all the styles several times until he knows which is best.

Re: What's up with Maemo and Internet Tablet Talk?

i'm not sure about maemo.org, thats pretty much ok, but itt is really a funny creature in that it causes so many problems on the device its about. double-rendering of first page, links too small (try to tap on the "1234...last"-links within a forum thread without zoom), strange flash stuff that makes the browser crash until you find you have to turn flash off...

well, it still is a great site content-wise. and i heard there'll be a re-design.

Need some features that ONLY available on the 'black' version, so would be flexible if allow the choice. Once in a hotel with poor wifi, needed to try several versions to see which is the best, as kindly pointed out by Benny above, stucked in a version that cannot post and cannot come back to the 'black'........., I 'regret' to confess, a wince machine bail me out:(

Re: What's up with Maemo and Internet Tablet Talk?

I missed the mobile version choices... sorry, but...

The problem with the Maemo site is that the orange search box (CSS) fills the top of the screen when you go into a section. If you're searching that might be ok (if the frickin' search feature was a bit smarter - look at the libraries, guys), but if you're just looking to see what's new, and what's changed, it's really annoying to scroll down two screens to get to anything interesting. Also, it's too heavy when it doesn't need to be. Can you say 'Craigslist'.

I must admit that I do find the ITT site very useful, but the black version is a bit odd on the IT. You can't see the text entry boxes for the search functionality, and the whole thing is a bit heavy.

The lack of a "style chooser" in the Mobile styles is an annoying ommission but it's either a bug in the styles or in vBulletin as it's the same problem on other vBulletin forums which also offer these same styles.

If you want to get back to Dark from one of the other styles, use the link in the following thread:

I do agree: On the N800 with good internet connections the MicroB browser uses several seconds to upload and sometimes blocks. Opera is a little bit better but certanly the sites should be optimized.
