What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
I'm doing research on this subject, but there's no research better than asking for direct input from those who might have a quick answer. ;)
I need a charity for LDUG/jablet to sponsor, especially if it's to have nonprofit status. My thoughts (I haven't heard from zero yet but his opinion is of course highly relevant) are to target one that is at least somewhat related to or impacted by technology. First thought that came to mind was any sort of environmental concern, particularly one that addresses recycling, energy conservation or alternatives, etc. Anyone have any serious suggestions? |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
I'm not a person that's super involved in being green or anything like that, so... I suppose whatever would help clean up whatever mess we could possibly make. I don't know... whatever you guys choose.

Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
lol... hopefully we won't make too big a mess. :D
I just think any charity that offsets the impact of technology would be the best fit. There's no avoiding the fact that production and usage of communications devices has a negative impact in some ways. Balancing that by supporting causes working to correct those impacts not only is the responsible thing to do but helps stave off accusations of hypocrisy. You know, like when green-speaking rock stars are ripped for flying private jets all over the globe... ;) Now that I think about it, maybe the easy thing is identify those that Nokia supports and join in... |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
I nominate the "The BOFH Beer & Absinthe Research Fund".....
I'll guarantee that non of it will be wasted on "Management and Administration Fees" like 99.9999999% of charity's....... |

Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?

Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Holy cow Dave!
I *just now* found NTEN in a google search and was about to ask the EXACT SAME THING! Great minds think alike, eh? Anyway, a linkie: http://www.nten.org/?_kk=technology%...4-f9662918ca8b Looks promising! |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
yea NTEN looks like a pretty good charity. I do not know a ton about it and am researching a bit more to find out.
Great Minds do think alike.... Dave |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Does it sound self-defeating to suggest the One Laptop Per Child project?
I feel OLPC's goals are in many ways complementary of Nokia's, and not in any way contradictory or competing. Roger |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Yeah, Roger, I was considering that one as well. However, that's part of device proliferation... I'm really looking for charities that try to restore damage such as that due to industrialization, to balance things. Like rainforest replanting, etc.

Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
I always struggle to find a more worthwhile charity than this one, maybe there isnt as clear a link to the impacts of technology but all of the industrialized countries we live in could do a hell of a lot more to help:
http://www.msf.org/ Hell you could even ship them a few N810's to do some blogs for you, no better way to highlight the portability of the devices. |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Oh yeah, that's one I keep my eyes on (as well as Doctors Without Borders, natch). Worthy cause.
Unfortunately, I personally can't send out any tablets... |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Hey, its not all down to you Texrat, I thought there were a fair number of other ITT members out there?!? I just meant if the connection was made to the charity it could be a nice way to tie this all in.

Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
Ok, here are my own main picks so far:
-the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Nokia sponsors this as well, so it's a good fit in more than one way. -www.kiva.org . They facilitate micro loans to third-world entrepreneurs. Mostly people trying to make a living off their unique natural resources. -http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/about_us.htm . Lately I'm becoming a huge advocate of fair trade. |
Re: What charity should LDUG/jablet sponsor?
I'd vote for the Not For Sale Campaign:
http://www.notforsalecampaign.org/ I like the idea of free software AND free people. ;) -T. |
