N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Apparantly everybody complaint about the case for the N800 is quite true. It is flimse and 110%, complete useless. I cannot put the N800 into my shirt pocket for that reason. I am still carrying the 770 around as it got a shinning metal case. Just wondering has anybody found a sturdy case for the N800? I read some threads, one of them is using a portable case for harddrive. Not my taste, as it increase the size to almost like a lady's handbag. I am still looking would also appreciate if anybody find something just fit the N800.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I just packed my N800 in it's Nokia case on a 32 mile desert backpacking trip. I pulled the N800 from my pack at the end of the trip and it was just fine. I regulary carry the N800 in my pants pocket as well. The case might not be to everyone's liking, but I am very happy with its minimalist design and the creative use of magnets. It seems to be 100% (maybe 110% but I am not sure how we are getting our numbers) effective at protecting the N800 from some extreme environments.
Unless we are talking about the 'auto eject' grey sock that is included with the N800. I guess you could figure that to be over 100% ineffective. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I have a flimsy "skin" type case that I bought on eBay for about $10. It is fine, though it doesn't offer much protection. The N800 doesn't need much protection. I have had my N800 since January and use it constantly and carry it in a pocket. I have had very few problems. I think it probably wouldn't stand up to a baseball bat to the face, and neither would I. Otherwise, we are both fine.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Yes, I like the official Nokia N800 case. It protects the machine just fine, and I can always put the whole thing, case and all, in my pocket. BTW, I also like the new built-in stand. When I lie on the couch surfing the net, I prefer N800 over N770, which I also have, for this reason: putting one hand between the stand and the body stabilizes N800 and avoids accidental dropping. It certainly beats holding N770 with both hands.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I too like the official N800 case - it offers effective screen protection with the minimum amount of case, almost perfect really.
Perfection would have been achieved if only the N800 had a magnet sensor in the front bezel so that it could detect when the screen is covered by the flap and automagically lock the device.... :) |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I will also vote in favor of the official case. I found that folding the front cover back, the cover becomes a stand that tilts the N800 at an angle that makes it easy for me to read and type, give it a try.

Edit: OK, it is about time someone post a picture of what you are talking about... I thought you meant the "official" case that came with the N800. But now I realize you are probably talking about the accessory case. http://europe.nokia.com/MEDIA_BANK_1...00_312x312.jpg |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I like the PDAir "Book" type case for the N800. The quality is quite nice and it allows full access to everything while in the case (except the stand). Both mine and my partners have held up quite well.

That is the one! :)

http://pocketables.typepad.com/photo...nbox_case2.jpg Now THAT is a pretty useless case. Do different markets get different cases included in the N800 box? Or did you buy the accessory cover from Nokia? |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
N800s sold in all markets come with the "sock" (post #10) - you buy the "official N800 hard case" (post #7) separately. The sock is rubbish, the hard case is good IMHO. :)

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
You can get the official n800 hard case (SU-31) at buy.com for about $30.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Frankly, the "Grey Sock" should not be shipped with the n800. After the upteenth time the thing slipped out and hit the ground, its faceplate popped off. That's when I invested in the only $10 case I could find without a picture of Mario on the front. It seems to generate more friction on any surface on the outside than it does against the n800 on the inside.
Seriously, a PSP or DS Lite case will fit just fine. But the custom case probably makes you look less like a 12-year-old, if you're worried about that. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Does the N800 with the leather case fit inside the sock? I would try but I have no clue were my "sock" is since finding it totally useless on about day 2.
I have used the one in post #7 since it became available and like it. Like heavyT said, folding the back over sets it at the perfect angle for me if I use it on a desktop. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
N800 with the leather case U-31 does fit inside the "sock." That's how I carry my n800 when going on a trip.

Thanks... now it somehow makes sense in a Finnish sort of way. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I use the sock all the time, but I can see that the 770 owners have an advantage with the hard shell.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I use a nylon PSP case I got for $5 at Big Lots. The top of the case is stiffened to offer some protection to the screen and there is a separate compartment I can fit a pair of earbuds and the charger in.
I also have one of those silicone skins on it, to keep the case from getting scratched and it gives some protection if I drop it I suppose. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I use the slip case to hold my SU-8W keyboard. My N800 lives in a leather ProPorta case with the aluminium screen protector.
Perfect! |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Perfect? For travelling maybe. For daily use, can you put the N800 with case in you pocket? I still think Nokia SU-31 is the best solution.

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
I got one from Proporta that is about $35 US, and awesome: http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05...260&t_mode=des

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
As a outer travelling shell, I use a Otterbox 2000. It fits the N800 perfectly, and while it will only fit the largest coat pockets, but it is water- and crushproof to a degree that you'll usually have to worry about your own life and health before matters get dangerous for the encased n800...

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
The proporta case only adds a couple of mils to the size. fits in my pockets fine and i can sit on it without damaging it. and, yes, I use it daily!

Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Reading so many "which case to use" posts here (again!), I really wonder why Nokia refuses to offer a decent protection for the N800/N810 that "just works" the way they did for the 770. It could well be sold as an accessory, but it should better integrate with the device. Having to glue it to the back is not an elegant solution, neither is the fact that the device is no longer aware if the state of its cover.
The situation is simply disappointing. Its not professional. |
Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
Thanks for everybody's suggestions. I am NOT carrying the brand new shinny N800 and continue to using my dutiful 770 because it aint got a protective case! Milhouse already points that out in other post before my purchase, thanks Mil. Any how, I digest the previous post of 105 (Benny has nicely put it, (again), ) and the current one, here are the choices, NOT in any particular order:
1) http://cgi.ebay.com/Leather-Case-for...QQcmdZViewItem 2) pdair - http://www.pdair.com/catalog/index.php 3) http://tinyurl.com/2t2ewq 4) proporta - http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05...260&t_mode=des 5) otterbox 2000 - http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/st...&keyword=49611 6) Nokia, U-31, the accessory one, this thread, post #7 7) Nokia, the official one, AKA the "sock", this thread, post #10, advantage, cheap! Go figure... 8) DS Lite - http://www.renchi.com/renchi/NewsDetail?newsID=765; come on, dont be shine, post your pic with your N800 inside. Thanks. We just want to know:) 9) PSP - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-711719859.../dp/B000KI99ZE 10) PSP from Big Lots - http://www.mysimon.com/5/PSP-case.html 11) Universal PDA case - http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...05&dcaid=17902 The above URLs are only for show and tell purpose. Re: N800 case is a joke and I am not laughing
For those shopping for a case, may as well get a car mount. I use a carmount on my desk and the tablet does not annoyingly move around when I tap on it. And of course, it actually works in the car when I travel. I ordered several just to try out, and this is MY choice, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ayphotohosting, This is how it looks.
What? Nay, I dont work for them. Just a satisfy customer :), Watchout though, it works very good and holds the tablet very sturdy. However, the suction cup would eventually fatigue and your tablet will fall. It happens much faster in the car as temperature changes during the day, so always, always, think about what happen if it falls. Most of the time it stays there for a long time, I have a 4 hrs trip and it did not fall. The suction cup is 8 cm in diameter, I think it is big. And if you worry about the suction cup fatigue, it also comes with some hooks for hook on the the A/C vents of your car, it looked very sturdy but I have not tried it. No other reasons, I just found the suction cup satisfactory. It costed approx $16 and I strongly recommend it if you have not gotten any car mounts. As I said, I also use it in the house, it allows one hand typing when the carmount holds the tablet in one position. Try it, dont just gawk at me:p bun |
