Before I buy the N800...
I had a few question that I searched around the forum for, but I just wanted to make sure of the answers before I go out and buy the N800.
1. Webcam. Only supports N800-N800? Correct? 2. Screen Problems. Whats up with the pressure problems/touch screen problems? Still a problem? Fixed? Rare Problem? 3. Is there any official, or 3rd party calendar application? How about an application for taking Notes? 4. Hows the wi-fi reception? As good as a laptop? Worse? Better? 5. Any other problems I should be aware of? Thanks for your imput :) |
Re: Before I buy the N800...
1. I used Gizmo to call someone on their PC. and used the camera to show my visage. So it isn't restricted to N800-N800.
2. I haven't heard the pressure problem mentioned for a long time. It isn't an issue for most N800 users. 3. The N800 supports Ajax, so I assume it works with Google Calendar among others. 4. As good as a laptop. 5. Not that I can think of. |

Awesome, that puts a lot of my concerns to rest, thanks for the help

Re: Before I buy the N800...
1. As the previous poster said, Gizmo supports (or will support...) video calls between N800 and PC versions of its software.
2. I believe that the screen problems were addressed very early on. The only remaining problem, which will only be solved if you make the leap to an N810, is that the screen is not very visible in bright sunlight. Oh, and the backlight is not 100% even, but this is rarely noticeable and never (IMHO) a problem. 3. GPE Calendar works very well, and if you're feeling adventurous, a forum member called penguinbait just ported KDE and the KDEPIM software, which I believe (correct me if I'm wrong!) includes a calendar. 4. About the same range as a laptop... but it detects more AP's (does not always manage to connect to the ones my laptop does not see). 5. Your significant other will start complaining because you're giving less attention to him/her once you get your hands on the N800 :) |

There is currently no software publicly available that supports any other video calls. They claim that OS2008, to be released this month, will add proper gizmo video support. 2. Screen Problems. Whats up with the pressure problems/touch screen problems? Still a problem? Fixed? Rare Problem? Fixed or rarre. 3. Is there any official, or 3rd party calendar application? How about an application for taking Notes? calendars? Note Ajax is gonna be slow (for now). For notes, there are various things available, but I end up using the bundled notes app and a keyboard. 4. Hows the wi-fi reception? As good as a laptop? Worse? Better? as good as a laptop for reception. For Wifi detection, it's better. 5. Any other problems I should be aware of? Probably. You'll find out soon enough :) (and convulted, you might want to add "or insist that you get her/him one too") |
Re: Before I buy the N800...
Thanks for the responses. Just 2 more questions and then I'm gonna go ahead and order it off Amazon.com.
1. The Memory card trashing Problem. Fixed with the new firmware? Is it still a problem? And if it is, how frequent a problem is it? 2. Transcend 8GB SDHC. Anyone know if its a good quality card? I've only ever bought from sandisk, so I'm not sure if they make good stuff. Thanks :) |

3. Google Calendar
The advantage is that this calendar is synchronised on every PC, Nokia, Mac, Linux machine I am using. In fact I am using the Google Calendar (mobile), http://www.google.com/calendar/m |

I'll add that the camera in the N800 can be used as a still camera with an application down loadable from the Maemo download site. Don't expect great quality though. I think someone is working on a video camera application package for the N800. I have noticed that WiFi detection exceeds WiFi reception, which is alright with me. Any other problems you should be aware of? If you buy a N800 today, don't freak out when you learn that the Bluetooth interface is primarily for tethering to a cell phone, an external BlueTooth keyboard, a bluetooth GPS rcvr (all three of which us the Serial port protocol). There is virtually no Bluetooth headphone, earphone, headset capability today. Many are saying Bluetooth headphone / headset functionality will arrive in a couple weeks in the form of OS2008, which is supposed to be able to support Bluetooth audio. ENJOY |
