Application manager error

Application manager no longer works. The program starts, but only displays a white screen. My sources.list file seems OK, an apt-get update from the command line works.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Application manager error

Interesting. I am just getting that same error now.

I tried to install something from Maemo.org and when app manager started, it only gives me a blank screen.

After power cycling, it still gives me the same blank screen.

Did you get "Operation failed" when updating? If so, I noticed the Khertan repository is down, and causing that error on mine. Disabling Khertan soved the problem.

No. I got no error. Just an empty Application Manager.

The Application Manager refuses to respond to any input. I can't close it and I can't access the menu to disable any repositories.

Got it after trying to install (ResetWlan 0.2 ).

Anyone have any suggestion on how to fix this.besides....reload the OS ??

Re: Application manager error

I've tried several things.

I've logged in as root and did an "apt-get update" and everything updated fine (there were some GPG errors, but according to a message here that wasn't really a problem). No change.

The only recent change was virtual memory. So I disabled that. Nothing.

I've removed all SD cards and the battery. Waited. Put just the battery back in and started it back up. Nothing.

Everything else seems to work just fine.

I too am getting the blank App Manager problem on my N800.

It just started this morning.

apt-get still works fine. I removed all apps that I had installed yesterday, just in case, but App Mgr still doesn't respond. Blank screen only. I thought it might have something to do with my recent attempts to get SMB shares working, but I don't think so anymore.

If I try to close it, I eventually get the message, "Application Manager is not responding. Do you want to close it?"

I sometimes get that message, but usually I have to drop to a shell and kill the process.

I verified that apt-get is working. I manually added a repository and manually installed an application. No problems at all. Application installed just fine.

So the problem is definitely with Application Manager.

Re: Application manager error

As yet, no solution here. Anyone know what the program in /usr/bin Application Manager runs? If it could be started from the command-line perhaps some error messages might lend a clue.

Re: Application manager error

/usr/bin/osso-application-installer

but there don't seem to be any messages, only the same behavior.

Have you changed the hostname of your n800 recently via the "hostname" command and/or /etc/hostname ?

If so, make sure you add the new name to the localhost entry in /etc/hosts

I didn't. But I noticed that it had changed. So I changed it back.
Verified the host name is in /etc/hosts.

Application Manager still hangs.

Re: Application manager error

Could it be Nokia messing with their repositories in prep for N810? Whatever is causing the problem... App Manager really needs to fail more gracefully. Hope that is covered in OS2008.

Totally off-topic for this thread, I'm subscribed for instant email notification, but it ain't happening :( Back on topic, everything else on my N800 seems to be working fine. As an earlier poster mentioned, apt-get from the command-line is working w/o errors.

Shoot. Well I've seen App Manager do *exactly* what you describe when the current hostname doesn't have a localhost alias in /etc/hosts. Happend to me on two n800's where I changed the hostnames, and I could reproduce it by just removing the entry. Oh well...

Ha. That was my problem. I was messing with /etc/hosts and I changed the hostname there. As soon as I added the current name back to hosts and then changed /etc/hostname to my preferred name, everything worked ducky!

Thanks Moonshine! I have no idea how you figured that out.

I completely agree that App Mgr really needs to fail more gracefully.

I had changed my hostname. Changing it back and rebooting fixed the problem.

I re-checked everything and found that editing /etc/hostname didn't work! The old (wrong) hostname was still being reported. So I used the hostname program to change the host name and re-verified that /etc/hosts had the correct hostname.

Then I re-ran Application Manager and it's working now.

Thank you!

Re: Application manager error

I've just had the blank Application Manager screen issue described by other posters in this thread.

I have read the instructions on this thread, but am having some problems as I'm a bit of a N800 newbie. Hopefully some kind person will be able to help?

The "hostname" command returns Nokia-N800-26 & the top line of /etc/hosts is 127.0.0.1 Nokia-N800-26 localhost so as far as I can see, the hostname is the same in both places. Is this correct?

I then decided to try and change the hostname via sudo gainroot, but I'm then prompted to enter a password which I don't know so I'm unable to change the hostname :-(

I thought the point of becomeroot is you could then do a sudo gainroot and become root, without being prompted to enter a password, or am I terminally confused?!

HELP!

Try rootme as the password.

Thanks for the quick reply!

If I start X Terminal & type 'sudo gainroot', and enter rootme as the password, it says "Sorry, try again." :-(

Do you have any idea why this is happening?

No, I sure don't :(

I'm currently running OS2008 on my N800, so I'm hampered in investigation.

Re: Application manager error

My App Mgr Settings were set to refresh every time I logged into it and the last time it worked was on the 5th of November. I now get an error stating that it is "Unable to refresh list" which is really irritating because I had just uninstalled Rhapsody and now it won't reinstall! Just because I was cleaning stuff up... there goes my 12.99 for this month! It now looks like there was an update to Rhapsody in the meantime as well! They better get it back up and running soon! I use Rhapsody all the time to show, teach and practice different versions of songs!

Have a look at the Application Manager log which you can view via Tools -> Log...

You should see the problem in the log and can hopefully correct it by temporarily disabling the offending repository, however it could be more serious than that in which case you may want to post the contents here...

Re: Application manager error

IThis is what came up... but I've got no clue what it means or what to do with it.

osso-application-installer 4.46, UI version 2
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://openbossa.indt.org.br bora/games Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/openbossa.indt.org.br_games_dists_bora_games_binar y-armel_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

JeffElkins 2007-11-16 17:05

Re: Application manager error

It looks like that one repository is at fault. You can disable it in your /etc/apt/sources.list file or via application manager.

I'm using OS2008, so my app manager my be different from yours. The menu is: Application manager->Tools->Application catalog.

Re: Application manager error

OK... Deleted it!

I just did an online chat with Rhapsody Support and this the pertanent part of the conversation:

Martyn: I am using Rhapsody on my Nokia N800 and after uninstalling, it won't reinstall

Rhapsody Support Person: Martyn, I have checked with this issue. RealNetworks is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it. We expect it to be a temporary problem. When it is fixed, you will be able to install Rhapsody player on your Nokia N800 phone.

Rhapsody Support Person: I really regret for the inconveniences caused.

Martyn: OK... Do they have an approximate date that they may have the N800 issue taken care of?

Rhapsody Support Person: I am sorry to say this as of now we have not idea about this. We are gravely working on this issue and we are expecting the issue to be resolved in few days.

==========================================

Talked to Nokia Support and got sent directly to the web page with the Rhapsody App. ver. 1.1: http://www.nokiausa.com/A4410957

I'm Locked, Loaded & Rockin Again!

Lesson Learned, "Don't load 'ver. 2.1' unless you got OS2008 running!"
